Smith Dies; Former Erwin Officer Funeral Services will be held Tuesday for Clair B. Smith, 49, of 146 Main St, Coopers Plains. He died Saturday in Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira following a long illness. Born Aug 1 1928 in Hornell, he was the son of Herman and Beatrice Burdett Smith. He married Freda Sherwood in 1950 in Painted Post. Mr. Smith had resided in the Painted Post area most of his life. He was a 25 year employee of the Painted Post Post Office. He was a constable and a member of the special police for the Town of Erwin and had served as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town of Erwin. He was a veteran of WWII and a member of the Indian Hills Golf Club. Surviving are: his wife, Freda; a son, Richard at home; two daughters, Mrs. Barney (Poole) Jr. of Sumrall, Miss and Mrs. Donald (Cynthia) McCracken of Alpine; his mother, Mrs. Beatrice Smith of 572 W. High St, Painted Post; three sisters, Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Manning of Tempe, Ariz, Mrs. Milton (Marian) Alderman of Painted Post and Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Miller of Medina, OH; and one grandson. Friends may call at the Phillips Funeral Home in Painted Post today 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held there Tuesday at 10:30 am with the Rev. Bruce Barden, pastor of the Painted Post United Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post.
