I was told that he was married before he married my grandmother, and had a daughter by his first marriage. I don't know what his first wife's name was but my grandmother was Carrie Ray, the daughter of Adle Windom Ray and Samual Ray of Tallapoosa Ga. Just thought I would share this with you, I have been searching for many years, don't give up, because I have found my grandmothers family thru this site, and we stay in contact to this day.

By the way I went back to the W. Virgina census and descovered in the 1870 census for Washington Township a George Smith approx. the right age with a son the right age named George. I believe that this might be the father. The only thing is it shows the birthplace of the George Senior as being Virgina. This could be because of a little hedgeing on the part of a first generation Immigrant. Thanks again., The Fern listed in the 1930 census was my mother and she always said she was born in Oklahoma.

Surnames: smith, little, eddy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VJIBAEB/28390.2 Message Board Post: In 1830 Harold and Fern were listed as being born in Oklahoma and the next child, Agnes as being born in Ohio. Despite the 1920 census saying those 2 children were born in Ohio, I believe the 1930 census is correct. He was, after all, an oil driller. There is a WWI draft registration card for Howard L. Smith born 12 Nov 1887 in Ohio. Sorry I can't make out the town. He registered in Muskogee, OK. There is an IGI birth record for Howard Smith born 12 Nov 1888 in Grandview, Washington, OH to Rebecca J. Little and George J. Smith. The different year may just be a transcription error. George J. and Rebecca J. Smith are also listed in 1920 Grandview census. George lists his place of birth as West Virginia. 1910 also finds George and Rebecca (listed as Jennie) in Grandview with all but 1 of their 9 children living at home. Listed above them is presumably George's father, also George, born in Germany. In 1900 you will find Howard in Grandview living with his parents, George and Jennie. Birth month and year lsited as Nov 1887. George's father, George Smith, Sr. is living with them in this census. Listed as born Jul 1833 in Germany, widowed. The 1880 census shows George J Smith with his parents George and Sarah A. Smith in Grand view, Washington, OH. Sarah was born about 1836 in OH. According to IGI birth records Sarah's maiden name is Eddy. Hope it helps. Debby

In 1920 he was married to Anna. In 1919 Grandma Jo was married for the first time (I'm guessing Wheelock). But at some point the two of them (Josephine and Herbert) had a tryst, possibly while still married to their current significant others. My grandfather was born in 1924. I don't know when they married, or if they did. Though family information claims they were and her family had it anulled (there was 36 years difference between them). If this is the case, I can see why my grandfather didn't speak of the specifics. Now if I can just find that daughter and the fire. Thank you again, so much!
