    1. Samuel Smith, b. OH
    2. I am looking for information on my gg grandfather, Samuel Smith who was b. in OH. He was no longer on the census by 1860, but I did find him in Izard Co. ARK in 1850. It appears that an older man named John Smith might have been his father. This John was b. in VA. I do not have the info in front of me at this time, but think John was b. before 1800 and Samuel about 1810-20. Some of the family moved to Miller Co. MO by 1860. Samuel wife moved, as did his son John who was later in the Civil War. Two daughters moved for sure, maybe more. They were named Easter and Mary Ann. Mary Ann was my great grandmother who married widower, William Wilson Sloan. Any info helpful. Thanks, Ellie Swanger, CO

Michael's parents were Patrick Smith (who was known as Paddy) and Joyce Bannister. Michael's possible grandfather was Frederick Smith, who married a Lorrian Griffiths in County Cavan in Ireland. I am unsure if these ancestors here below are related to my family, but I know the Smith family from Corick (or a place that sounds like Corick) in Cootehill in County Cavan in Ireland are a large catholic family in Northern Ireland that are related to my family over here in Malvern Link, UK. I do not know if any of them move onto Cananda, it is possible. I have also found a James Thomas Smith who married an Alice Smith maiden name unknown to me at present and they had a daughter called Alice Mary Smith born 12th July 1887 in Malvern Link. I have another James Smith born about 1791 and he died 19th May 1852 aged 61 in Malvern Link. I hope this might help as I am still gathering information at present from the parish records in Malvern Link. I do not know very much, but so far I know some of my Smith family who came to Malvern Link from County Cavan in Ireland, came during and after the 2nd World War, but some of them could have come earlier or moved onto Canada. My Smith family married into the O'Sheas from Cork in Ireland and Bannisters from Malvern Link in the UK.

It is possible that some of the Smith relatives came from Cincinnati, Ohio, and Tennessee. However, this is all I have found and have been told: My father is Elmer Junior Smith DOB 2-25-1935, born in Shawneetown, IL (also known as Old Shawneetown right on the Ohio river). Elmer married Anna Mae Travelstead on August 15, 1958 in Shawneetown, IL, in the county of Saline. Divorced her in 1980. He then married Mary Hine June 19, 1982. They did not have children together. My parents had five children. Sandy Jean Smith (myself) DOB 06-16-1959 in New Haven, IL at home, Brenda Lee Smith DOB 01-05, 1961 in Eldorado, IL. She died June 1961 in New Haven at the age of 6 months, from apparently SIDS at home, Mary Frances Smith (Hall) DOB 07-28-1963 in Eldorado, IL, James Elmer Smith DOB 02-03-1965 in Eldorado, IL, and Elizabeth Ann Smith (Johnson) DOB 12-22-1966 in Eldorado, IL. Joel Claud Smith (my grandfather) DOB 2-14-1897, died 5-31-1965, buried in Westwood Cemetery, Shawneetown, IL. His first marriage to Lillie Belle Seely took place October 25, 1917. They had two children, 1 female-Mary Pauline Smith, 1 male-Joel Claud Smith (nickname Smokey Joe). His second marriage was to Alice May Back DOB 11-15-1908 of New Haven, IL. The marriage took place 10-25-1917, and she died 08-05-1946 from apparent cancer. Burial in Westwood Cemetery My grandfather later married Shirley??? Have no idea anything else about her. James A. Smith (was my great grandfather) DOB ca. 1877. He married Maggie Lamb of Ridgway, IL, in Shawneetown, IL, Saline, County. They had three sons together, and which one was my grandfather. There apparently was another son George Smith and a William (Bill) Smith. My grandfather apparently had a half brother Floyd Thomas Jr, whom I don’t know to much about. His sisters were Clara (Smith) Pruitt and she had lived in Mt. Vernon, IL, and had a son whose name is/was Bob Pruitt, and his other sister was Hattie (Smith) Padgett, and also was living in Mt. Vernon, IL. I was also told of another sister, whom was Mary Pauline (Smith) Back. She had two daughters Faye (Back) Nation of Shawneetown, and Delilah (Lolly) (Back) Vaughan, they are my 2nd cousin, and my father and uncle’s nieces. Joseph Smith (was my great-great grandfather) DOB ca. 1808. He married Eliza Jane Akins married ca. 1845 in Ridgway, IL, and he died ca. 1863. Virginius W. Smith is also in my line. These are the parents and grandparents of my grandmother. Alice May Back my grandmother's father was James Back married my grand mother Josephine Mossbarger in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, she also had a daughter also named Josephine and she was born 07-20-1891, died 09-05-1972 in Loretta Nursing Home, Shawneetown, IL., and buried in Westwood Cemetery, Shawneetown, IL My grandfather and his wife are buried in Westwood also. I also have a cousin Sheila Pinkston buried in Westwood Cemetery, Shawneetown. Now James Back's father was Mitch Back and was married to Mary Hise, no dates available on them at all. Now Josephine Mossbarger's parents were John W. Mossbarger, married Alice D. Pruitt. now there is nothing else that I have. I was also told there was also a Luther Ingleton. Apparently, this man was my grandfather’s cousin. Still unknown for sure. There was also a Jim or Red Davies whom was said to be related. There is also a cousin Charles Usselton who I was told lived in Dale, IL, his brother was Hershel was a jockey who was German. If any of this rings a bell please contact me so we can get together. I am trying to plan a family reunion for the Smith's in Shawneetown, IL. So if you are Scottish or related any anyway please let me know. If you or anyone else is interested in helping getting this together please let me know, I would love to hear from you or anyone for that matter in this regards.

    3. How wonderful that you stumbled onto your Smith family. That gives me renewed hope! In my Smiths from Union Co PA, Noah Smith was born 14 June 1824 or 1825 in Prestlow, Union Co., PA. Now there is no Prestlow anyplace in that county or in the whole state of PA. Prestlow comes from one of three obits for Noah who reportedly left Union County when he was 14 years of age or 1840, BUT at least by 1850 when he is living in Stephenson Co Illinois with a Barber family. Noah had a brother, John born about 1823. John was in Sandusky Co Ohio for a period of time before moving to Stephenson Co IL and then Green Co Wisconsin. John had a son, Charles Milton Smith. Noah had a son, Charles Smith who tragically died at age 14. I wonder if there is some connection since Noah and Charles are both well used names. Noah bn 1824 0 1825 and his brother, John, born 1823's father was Michael Smith. This is family tradition, it is entered into a church book, and John remarried in 1885 and he lists Mical and Elisabeth Smith as his parents. (Mical is how it was spelled on the marriage papers). Mical/ Michael and Elisabeth had to have been born by 1800 to have children in 1823, 24, 25. It is possible that your Smiths and my Smiths were simply fond of the names Noah and Charles OR they may be related in some way. I will relook at Smith records I've collected for Untion Co PA and let you know if I find any that might be of interest to you. In the 1850 census, Noah Smith, age 15 [close enough for genealogy, I can assure you!] lived in a household headed by George Smith, age 58, a laborer, and his wife, Mary, age 49, both natives of PA. Others in the family were another George, age 16; Noah; Hiram, age 10; William, age 7; and Simon, 6. Next door was the family of Simon Wittenmoyer, age 36, a carpenter; Sophia, age 26; Susanna, age 8; Savilla I, age 6; Mary E., age 4; and Sarah A, age 2. Census Place: Derry, Mifflin, Pennsylvania; Roll: M432_797; Page: 286; Image: 228. That out of the way, do you happen to have dates for Charles Smith? Do you know if he was married before he married Tillie Aurand (who, for the record, was my great grandmother)? (Also for the record: She was born Matilda Scott Brindel on 19 Sep 1874 and d. 19 Jul 1958. She was married to Harry Grant Aurand 30 Nov 1893 and bore him 5 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. Harry died suddenly 16 Dec 1910 at age 36.) BTW, Grant may seem like an uncommon name to us, but in the 1800s people often named their children after national heroes. I've got a couple of Andrew Jacksons in my lines, as well as a few George Washingtons. So, for children born after the Civil War, Grant was not that uncommon. Cheers, Richard
