I found a Mitchel Smith in Nicholas Co Ky. The Census shows he was 50 to 60 years old in 1830 with 6 members in the family. Then the head of house hold in 1840 was between 20 to 30 with 5 members in the family I an trying to follow up on the unlikely possibility that the father died between 1830 and 40 and further that his first son was named after him. Then the family disappears in the 1850 census. I will keep you posted if I can verify anything. Probably just a fluke

Surnames: Hiner Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VJIBAEB/28022 Message Board Post: I am trying to find someone who has information regarding the following: SMITH, HIRAM Y. Was born at Piqua, Miami county, Ohio, on the 22d day of March, 1843, moved with his father, John L. Smith, to Rock Island, Illinois, in 1850, and from thence to Des Moines, Iowa, in October, 1854.. In May, 1866, he graduated at the Law School at Albany, New York, and immediately returned to Des Moines and entered upon the practice of law, a member of the firm of Ingersoll & Smith. He has continued since in the practice of his profession and is now a member of the firm of Smith & Morris. Mr. Smith was an Atty for ANDREW JACKSON HINER who was lynched after being freed by the authorities... "At the trial a number of neighboring farmers and others from a distance had gathered together and much more that the usual whisperings and private consultations had been going on during the trial. The result of this was immediately seen when the justice dicharged Hiner from legal arrest. He was at once taken in charge by a number of resolute men. Young attorney Smith's horse was ordered out and he was quietly but firmly told to make his way to his home in Des Moines as speedily as possible. Neither his legal services nor his presence were any longer desired in that neighborhood. It was useless for him to resist. He could not save his client. These men had the power and the will to exercise it. What followed was never clearly told at least publically. Hiner was taken to the Four Mile Timber. He began to realize his danger..." I am trying to find any information regarding the hanging of Hiner who was referred to as "Jack" Hiner. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
