He was born May 28, 1918, in Miami County, a son of Ray and Gladys (Knight) Smith. He married Ruth (Young) Smith on March 29, 1941, and later married Betty Mateyoke on Aug. 30, 1973. Both ladies are deceased. He obtained his schooling from Butler Township High School and was a retired Miami County farmer and operator of Smith’s Feeder Pigs. He was a member of Santa Fe United Methodist Church. He participated in many parades in the surrounding area with his fiberglass elephants, “Big & Little Modoc.” He loved sports, especially basketball. His favorite teams were the Pacers and Colts. He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Watts, Swayzee, Marcia and husband Dean Reynolds, Kokomo, and Sherry and husband Jim Wilson, Ossian; and seven grandchildren, Kelly Lohman, Effingham, Ill., Ryan Watts, Chicago, Ill., Michelle Shane, Ossian, Lindsay Reynolds, Kokomo, Megan Reynolds, Colorado Springs, Colo., Erica Reynolds and Derek Miller, both of Kokomo. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by one son, James Weldon Smith; one daughter, Jo Ellen Miller; and two sons-in-law, Richard Watts and Randy Miller. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Laird Funeral Home in Amboy with the Rev. Evan Strong officiating. Burial will be in Santa Fe Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
