There are three Smith DNA projects that I know of. I administer the Northeastern Smiths DNA project. It is for male Smiths whose Smith ancestors lived in New England (CT, ME, VT, NH, RI, & MA), as well as PA, NY, OH, & NJ. This kind of research is a useful tool to supplement research of primary documents. It can help find other researchers who are related, and it can help you rule in or out relationship to specific persons if their descendants are participating. It can also help to point you to other geographic areas in which to search. We have a web page at http://www.smithconnections.com. Participants must be male Smiths because the genetic characteristic measured (the Y chromosome) is passed along the male line from father to son. The DNA test involves a simple cheek swab that is analyzed by a research lab at a discounted price for members of our group. Interested people who are not male Smiths may wish to recruit a male Smith of their line to participate. For instance, I am a female with the maiden name of Smith who recruited my first cousin, Bill Smith, to take part, and he and I are sharing the cost of the tests. People who wish to join the Northeastern Smiths DNA project may contact me at cgaziano@prodigy.net or may also join by clicking on http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=J83140 There is another DNA project for Southern Smiths with a web page at http://www.southernsmiths.org/dna/dnaresults.htm. There is also a Smith-Worldwide DNA project at http://smithfamilies.net. He was married to Stacey D. Grayson b 1825 AL. They were on the 1850 DeSoto Co., MS census, however, both their children Martha P. b 1846 and Eliza E. b 1848 were born in AL. Their son Ambrose b 1851 may have been born in MS or AL Next two children Andrew b 1853 and Edna Jane b 1855/6 were born in Jackson Co., AL. Is Alexander connected to either of the James M. Smiths in DeSoto Co., MS or are his connections in and around Jackson Co., AL. Alexander and Stacey were divorced (according to the 1880 Madison Co., AL census) before the 1860 Marshall Co., AL census were I found Stacey at. From this you can see this family went from county to county. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Only male DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged which makes surname studies and grouping possible." Both men and women can do the mtDNA test. Both tests can be run on the same sample from the man. People [male and female] with the same direct female lineage have the same mtDNA classification. I would have the same mtDNA classification as my siblings [male and female], my mother and her siblings, my maternal grandmother and her siblings, etc., etc. The big difference is, there is very little data on maternal lines and very few organizations specialize in presenting and organizing the data. The same mtDNA results would be in the direct matrilineal line going back indefinitely just like the Y-chromosome DNA results for the direct patrilineal line. My earliest known direct matrilineal ancestor is Rosanna McDAVID KAY, my gggg grandmother, born abt. 1770. She was daughter of Patrick McDavid, but the family of Rosana's mother [actually the name of Rosanna's maternal grandFATHER!] is unknown - that is my direct matrilineal brickwall. Regards to all, Theron Smith.
If you join a Family Tree DNA project (or start one targeted to what you want to discover/prove), test costs decrease. Lee Anne

Please provide a reference to that. Where did you learn this? My understanding is that femail DNA cannot be used in the same way male DNA can be used. Only male DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged which makes sirname studies and grouping possible. I know of no such group or study other than very generalized areas one might have originated from millions of years ago. Please explain and reference what you mean. This is truly news and a great break through that I've missed and I would like to know more about it. -----Original Message----- >From: LostMtRose@aol.com >Sent: Mar 30, 2006 8:44 AM >To: SMITH-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [SMITH] Re: To All Smith's at a roadblock > >females do the mtDNA and test their mother's lineage > > >==== SMITH Mailing List ==== >NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political >announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, >etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. >Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett kathleenburnett@earthlink.net >
