Old Pendleton would make sense as the area of South Carolina they were from -- others in DeKalb Co also came from what is now Anderson Co. SC The Samuel McElroy/Mary Stevenson line that was in DeKalb (and I suspect related to the McElroys who married into the Smith family) were originally Prince Edward Co. VA - then to Waxhaw Settlement then to Old Pendleton and then to GA 1820's. Thanks! LaVerne

Don't let yourself get too hung up on the surname thing. It was not unusual for ancestors to change their names when they emmigrated to a different country. That 25 marker match essentially guarantees a common ancestor and indicates that it wasn't too far back in time. Do some research and see if you can't tie the surnames together. The 37 marker upgrade is a good investment and I see that FTDNA now has a 59 marker upgrade available as well. Both will help identify how far back a common ancestor might have occurred. The website will send you a kit for a sample of your DNA. You rub the inside of your cheek and then the next day you do the other cheek. Mail it in they will do the rest. The more Smiths that do it the more we will learn of our past generations. I again suggest thay you do the 37 marker test. The more markers the closer you will get to the present day Smiths. I did the 12 marker first and found relatives all over. But our connections went back a few hundred years. Even though our markers [DNA] match it was hard to determine how far back in time that we had the same GGGGGGGGGF. Goodluck with your search. Again that is Familytreedna.com
peer@mindspring.com wrote: "... My understanding is that female DNA cannot be used in the same way male DNA can be used. Only male DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged which makes surname studies and grouping possible." See my earlier post today to SMITH-L. Y-chromosome [male] DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged. mtDNA is passed from a mother to each of her children [male and female] virtually unchanged. However, mtDNA is not passed from father to any of his children. Groupings are generally but not always based on the male descent, but they don't have to be. Surname studies based on mtDNA would be a little difficult since with our customs, female descendants typically use either their father's or husband's surnames. We sometimes speak of a woman retaining her birth surname when she marries - in this case, she merely opts to use her father's surname rather than her husband's surname - it's a DNA [but not necessarily male chauvinism] scenario either way. I strongly encourage my wife to use her father's surname instead of a middle name , but after one generation, this custom becomes impractical. I have no rapport with genealogists who trace only their patrilineal lines. [My SMITH line is rather dull and doesn't go earlier than my gg grandfather - expect from my "I1a" DNA I know his roots are in NW Germany.] All of the notable cousins I have found were on maternal lines. I will post my SMITH connection a little later. Regards to all, Theron Smith.
