They had 3 boys (Samuel, John & William and a girl, Emily, in Indiana prior to 1840, traveled to Upper Alton, IL and then had another boy, Hardin, in Upper Alton. John C was the son of William Smith & Martha Cleghorn. Catherine was the daughter of Basil R Prather & Rachel Holman. I can locate John C & Catherine in 1830 Indiana, 1840 Illinois in the census records. They do not appear in the 1850 census. In 1860, Catherine, their son John & Hardin appear in the Upper Alton, IL census. Catherine died in 1868 in Upper Alton and her newspaper obit indicates that she is a widow, however does not reveal the name of the cemetery. I can find no records for the death of John C. Smith. Samuel & Emily went back (reason unknown) since, in the 1850 census, I find Emily living with her grandmother (Rachel Prather) in Utica, Clark County, IN, and her brother, Samuel, married and living in Jeffersonville, Clark County, IN. Emily married in 1853 in Indiana. Can anyone assist me in determining the date/place of death/cemetery for John C. Smith. I have been unable to find any death info in Illinois.

James T. Smith was born 1805, Felicity, Ohio I beleive his father was James Smith born in Va. in 1777, m. to Elizabeth ?. In 1825 in Ind. James Sr. was in court to establish custody of his minor children, Sally and Martin {who were under 14 yr.} also listed was a Hanna & Anna. Elizabeth had died at this time. James Sr. also had a brother William who had died also. William left his estate to James children. I dont know what part of Va. they came from. In 1835 James Sr. remarried Elizabeth Allgood. In that same year James T. m. Spicy Jane Dougherty. they were living on a 80 A. peice of land James owned, In 1860 they were living in Ill. and had a boy named Joseph living with them Joseph listed as 13 yr. and b. in Ky. On the 1850 census there in Union Ky listed a Caswell Smith b. 1804 has a son 3yr. J. T. also his dughters have same Initals as James T.'s. Can this be James brother? does any one know any thing of them.? Any and all help appriciated very much Mary Lou

I think the Martin you refer to is shown in the 1880 census as Solomon's son. That Martin was born in 1856. I was looking for a relationship with another Martin Smith, who appears alongside Solomon in MS in the 1880 census. I tracked Solomon back to AL in 1870 and 1860. The Martin Van Buren Smith I am looking for would likely be Solomon's brother. Do you have any info on Solomon's parents and siblings?

It was named for the Cherokee Indians, who ceded the land that now comprises the county to the Federal government by the treaty of New Echota, 1835 Dec. 29. Cherokee County is located in the northeastern portion of the state, in the Appalachian Mountains. Cherokee County encompasses 553 square miles. It is bordered on the north by DeKalb County, on the west by Etowah County, on the south by Calhoun and Cleburne, and the east by Chattooga and Floyd Counties, GA. For the first ten years, the residents of Cherokee County quarrelled over the location of a county seat. In 1837, the AL legislature authorized the seat of county government to be established at Cedar Bluff. In 1844 an election was held and the county seat was moved to the town of Centre.
