In 1895 she married Capt. Anthony John Wm. Maddison (1870-1944), also of Sunderland. In 1912, after he was appointed British Vice-Consul, they sailed to the US where he established a consular office in Jacksonville FL. They remained in the US, removing to Brunswick GA where Mary Ann died 18 Apr 1964. Her descendants believe that her father was Joseph Smart of Sunderland who owned a fish market and that her mother's name was Sarah. The 1881 Census records a family in Sunderland, headed by Joseph Smart (born ca. 1843 at Seghill, Northumberland), with wife Ann F. Smart (born ca. 1840 at Bilton Banks, Northd), and daughter Mary A., born ca. 1871 in Sunderland. This is the only Mary Ann Smart of the correct age with father Joseph that I could find in Durham in any census year, though the mother's name is not Sarah. I also found, in earlier censuses, several men who could have been this Joseph's father, but was unable to successfully connect all the relevant dots (birth date and place, occupation).
