He had 5 children, 2 daughters and 3 sons John, William and Alexander. Alexander was born in1805. Thomas' wife died and he came to Canada to Almonte, Lanark, Ontario. Alexander followed his father to Canada in 1824 and by 1835 he settled in Clarendon Township, Pontiac, Quebec. Hello there My friend's Smart family descends from David Smart and Ann Whyte. Their son James was born 24 Sep 1798 in Careston. James married a Jean Anderson on 20 June 1829 in Brechin and they had the following children: William Anderson Smart (born Tannadice), James, Alexander, David, George, Mary Anne - all born in Brechin. There could be a link somewhere, because of the family christian names and the places of birth, but I haven't found a link to a Thomas Smart in my research so far. In my research on the Scotland's People website, I've found quite a few Smart families that don't fit in with my friend's family so I'll need to have a good look through these "strays" and see if any of them are yours. You might find the 1841 census for Brechin of some help. It can be found at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl I'll do some more research and get back to you in a few days.
