The furthest I can go back is a John Smart born around 1720 married to a lady Elizabeth, died in Mason County, KY in 1791. Had sons James (b. 1752) and Richard (b. 1754 who married Betsy Pullen), daughters Elizabeth (b. 1760) married Henry Clift, Eleanor (b. 1756) married to a Mr. Berry, Jane (b. 1758) married to Richard Pemberton, and an unknown who married a man named Peck having a son John Peck (b. 1770). I have done long hours of searching trying to locate where John Smart comes from and if I can tie him into any other existing families, but I am at a dead end. I know that I am going to have to travel to Virginia and Kentucky for they had been in the area of Franklin, Kenton, Campbell, Bourbon, and Mason counties for a very long time (probably the same area with county boundaries changing). Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [SMART] William Robertson Smart
    2. GILFORD, NH - William Robertson Smart, an international business executive of unbounded energy and curiosity, passed away at his home in Gilford, New Hampshire on March 21 at the age of 91. He and his wife Avis had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in January. Bill was born in Arbroath, Scotland on July 13, 1920 and moved to Schenectady, NY at the age of five when his father set out to find work in the United States after World War I. Bill graduated from Princeton University in 1941 with a degree in electrical engineering. During World War II, he served with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific, returning to Schenectady to marry Avis Perkins in 1946. Bill's career in corporate management with General Electric, and later Honeywell, took his family to Cleveland, Chicago, New York City, Pittsfield, MA, Dover, NH, London, Paris, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Boston. In 1983, he stepped down as Honeywell's senior vice president for corporate relations, and embarked on an active retirement, serving on several company boards and traveling widely with Avis and their grandchildren. He and Avis spent their summers in Gilford and winters in Charleston, SC. He was president of the New England Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He was also a proud Princeton alumnus, serving as President of the Class of 1941, and returning to campus for annual reunions, including his 70th last May. Bill enjoyed sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee, reading history and politics, listening to language tapes and repairing sundry appliances and furniture. He also thrived on launching fundraising projects for his many civic affiliations: the Gilford Rotary, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia, the Unitarian Church in Charleston, the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club, the St. Andrew's Societies of Schenectady and Charleston, the Alliance Franaise of Charleston and others. In addition to Avis, he is survived by four children and their families: Suzann Smart and Tom Merklinger of Clifton Park, NY, Robert Smart and Christine Belson of Washington, DC, David Smart and Margaret Frey of Cleveland, OH, and Christopher Smart and Shari Loessberg of Washington, DC. Also, seven grandchildren: Robert, David and John Merklinger, Anne, Caroline, Kate and Betty Smart. A memorial service will be held at 3PM on June 23 at their home in Gilford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia, 172 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH 03246, The Unitarian Church in Charleston, 8 Archdale Street, Charleston, SC 29401, or Princeton University Annual Giving, PO Box 5357, Princeton, NJ 08543-5357 (Please indicate in memory of William Smart, Class of 1941). 3. Hi, other researchers and I have corresponded greatly about the father of William Crawford Smart who was born about 1824. A lot of deductive reasoning, pointed to the father of our William as being Moses Smart from Halifax VA. But, I had a great uncle that said that William Crawford and Brothers came from Ireland. He could have been all wrong, or maybe it was William's ancesters that were from Ireland, which wouldn't fit the Moses Crawford from Halifax, unless much further back in time. There were several reasons that we thought Moses must be our Williams father, but no actual proof such as birth certificate to link them. Where was your John located?
