I guess it didn't post for some reason. Very weird! Very interesting info! I think you're right about W.H.H. Smart. I've been tossing it around in my mind, etc. I see that the Roberson girls are nieces and that their ages are 18 and 15. Do you think Roberson is really Robertson? I know they had a sister who married a Gainum Mynatt. Maybe he died and she remarried a Robertson/ Roberson. Who's daughters do you think they are? I got in touch with a member of the Lyons family who is going to get more info on the story about James' disappearance when they have a family reunion later this month. Mean while, I think I've been able to track both Elizabeth Smart and William Henry Harrison Smart (siblings) to Lamar County, TX in the same time frame (1870's). I later see William/Henry living in Grayson County, TX in 1880 just as you said Donald was in 1900. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've tried to track James R. Smart Jr. for many years. Everything I know is in the thread. James Jr moved to Alabama shortly after the War Between the States with his wife Cornelia (Lyons) and a child (I think), along with her family. Shortly thereafter he "went West" and was supposed to send for Cornelia. He was not heard from again. There is a story in the Lyons family that James Jr wrote a letter or letters to Cornelia and that her brothers, who didn't like James, intercepted them and never gave them to her. James was never heard from again. I believe one of his daughters married and moved to Texas at some point. Also, I found my ggg-grandfather Donald (D.C.), James Jr's oldest brother, living in Pottsboro, Texas on the 1900 census. He's living next door to a B.D. Smart who was born in TN, has a number of kids who were born in Arkansas, and is a widower. I have no idea who he is:) If you have any questions let me know:) Regards, Michael Smart Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This line has haunted me for years. Finally started digging in further. As I stated previously my 3rd GGF James Smart married Mary E Wilkerson/Vessels/Pirtle in 1877 in Lamar Co. Texas. Doing a search for other Smart's in Lamar Country at the time... I run across a David Smart (b. abt 1826) and a Henry Smart (b. abt 1840-1849??). I also see records in Lamar County of Martha Smart who had been living with Henry, but the census record is barely readable so it's difficult to determine DOB. This information seems quite close (but not close enough to be sure) to the James R Smart line of family mentioned previously in this thread from Tennessee. From what I can tell, James R Smart Sr was married to Martha Smart and had several children including a Henry, Donald (David?), and a James Jr. Maybe I am reaching a bit on this one, but if anyone has any info that can confirm or deny this connection I'd be much appreciated. Author: DavidDavis716 Surnames: Smart, Maddison Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1724/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to identify the parents of Mary Ann Smart, born 27 Apr 1871, in Sunderland, County Durham, England. In 1895 she married Capt. Anthony John Wm. Maddison (1870-1944), also of Sunderland. In 1912, after he was appointed British Vice-Consul, they sailed to the US where he established a consular office in Jacksonville FL. They remained in the US, removing to Brunswick GA where Mary Ann died 18 Apr 1964. Her descendants believe that her father was Joseph Smart of Sunderland who owned a fish market and that her mother's name was Sarah. The 1881 Census records a family in Sunderland, headed by Joseph Smart (born ca. 1843 at Seghill, Northumberland), with wife Ann F. Smart (born ca. 1840 at Bilton Banks, Northd), and daughter Mary A., born ca. 1871 in Sunderland. This is the only Mary Ann Smart of the correct age with father Joseph that I could find in Durham in any census year, though the mother's name is not Sarah. I also found, in earlier censuses, several men who could have been this Joseph's father, but was unable to successfully connect all the relevant dots (birth date and place, occupation). Any information or ideas on this lineage will be very much appreciated. Thank you. David Davis Arlington, Virginia USA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: gimbo25 Surnames: Smart Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1723/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have an old newspaper from Bridgeton, NJ dated February 7, 1903, and Kara G Smart is mentioned in the following article. Women Temperance Workers Their Activities During the Last Month - Souvenir Card from Japan - Three New Members Received The young women of the Y. W. C. T. U. met in monthly business meeting last evening, in their rooms on South Laurel street, and considerable business was transacted. The reports of officers and superintendents showed a healthy activity during the last month, as well as some of the special work reported. Among other things the following superintendents reported these items of interest: - Flower mission, Mrs. Julia Wilson - visits and delicacies to the sick and a garment given to a poor child. Literature, Miss Jennie Nickelson - Distributed 22 "Union Signals," 31 magazines, 93 "State Gazettes," and 6044 pages of Anti-Canteen literature. Legislation and Petition, Miss Nickelson - had in the name of the Union petitioned Congressmen Gardner and Loudenslager and Senators Keen and Dryden to use their influence for the maintenance of the anti-canteen law. Had received reply from Mr. Keen and Mr. Loudenslager. Also secured the promise of 17 voters to write to the same effect. Social Mettings, Miss Myrtle Headly - One social meeting had gained two new members. The Press Department reported five columns of notices, reports and items published. Loyal Temperance Legion, Miss Jessie Rice - 9 members who had taken the "triple pledge," after a month's instructions, and others now taking preparatory instructions. The committee on extending thanks to City Council in their report made special mention of the kindness of Mayor Hampton and other city officials and the help they kindly gave when the committee visited City Hall. The time given the members in which to earn a dollar was extended to February 23, and at this time a "dollar social" will be held. A letter of congratulation was received from the State president Mrs. Emma Bourne, and also a pretty souvenir postal card from Miss Kara G. Smart, and Y. missionary in Japan. This was in reply to a greeting sent by four of the members while at National Convention in Portland. The picture is pretty showing four Japanese ladies at afternoon tea. Miss Lucretia Sheppard sang two very pretty solos after the business meeting. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
