Randy, Out of curiosity I did a search on the IGI for John Smart, all events, 1800, 20 yrs each way, England, all counties...quite a result. Glenda
Aren't most Smarts are from Scotland? This is the first time I've had Ireland come up in this line. Gertrude died 1937. The reason we know so little about her is because she died when the children were very small. Herbert later married again and no one really talked to the children in detail about their mother. Herbert died when I was a baby. I have checked in the GRO records and it occurred in the September quarter of 1916 at Lewisham 1d 1885. My Gertrude married Herbert Horsman in 1915, so they are not the same person. I have just sent for another birth certificate, having eliminated more Gertrudes by linking GRO information with the censuses of 1891 and 1901. Let's hope I am lucky this time. I am sending the following to all lists that I belong to. Feel free to distribute to other lists that you belong to. This is a great opportunity to perform random genealogical acts of kindness Help is needed by all serious genealogists to index images that can be viewed free of charge. For those of you who are unaware of this vast project, the majority of the films in the vast collection of the Family History Library are being digitalized for display free on-line. Those records need to be indexed. For close to two years, volunteers have been indexing many records but volunteers are needed to continue this project. Some of those already indexed projects can be viewed on a pilot site that can be reached here: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 New information is being added almost daily so be sure to check back often. If you want to volunteer to index various records, you can do so here: http://www.familysearchindexing.org/en/home/home.jsf?pname=homeTab The more volunteers the faster records will be made available on-line. It doesn't take long to do a page of records. Current projects include those in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Doing this can help you in your own research as you become familiar with old handwriting and various forms. Leslie Vaughn

I've just returned from holiday and had a look back at my Gertrude Edith Smart. Seems I said the wrong thing - it was Hilda Agnes who married a Thomas. I have Gertrude's birth from the IGI as being 25 March 1895 and her marriage to to a George Bellamy. Not sure where I got that husband from; IGI or perhaps from my father-in-law's memory. Your Gertrude's birth date tie in with mine. In case it helps I have her sibling births (and deaths) as: Albert Victor c 1886 - 1911 aka Bert Gertrude Edith 1888, m. Agnes Tripp and unknown second wife. Sydney Harold c 1890 Emily Elise c 1892, m. Percival Valer Walter Reginald 24 July 1894 - 1977 Winifred Georgina c 1896 - 1935, m. Elizabeth Rebecca Redding, moved Sydney Australia Hilda Agnes c 1897, m. unknown Thomas Edwin Ernest c 1898 - 1920 Fredrick William c 1899, moved Brisbane Australia Of course, even if she did marry a Bellamy she could have remarried later to your Horsham. That would mean you were related to my father-in-law after all. Eileen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
