My grandmother told us that all the time. Then I found out that there was a Clarksville in Virginia and then I found on her census records that she was born in North Carolina. I have yet to find an actual town by that name in North Carolina. I am just lost. I was thinking the town may have had that name in the mid 1800's, but may have changed. ok-i take that back - I just looked it up again and there is a Clarksville Township. Thanks for making me look again! Thanks again, Melanie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. For example where was she living when she died. Check that state for a Clarksville. If it exists check records for that town and see if you find her. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: smarttom Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1669.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you looked at the Maine census listings from that time? They do not give family member names, but you can figure out how many children, ages, etc. The 1810 census for Readfield, Kennebec shows Aaron White age 16-25, a female (his wife) age 26-44, and four females age 0-10. This supports the 1774 birth date from Sarah's headstone, and says Aaron was at least 11 years younger than her (born 1785 ). In 1820, Aaron White appears in the Vassalboro, Kennebec census. He and his wife are both in the 26-45 columns. There is one male age 0-10, two females 0-10, and four females 10-16. There is also a Samuel White family of similar age listed right after Aaron White -- a brother? Also four Smart families listed close to the White listings, so Sarah may have been from one of these. The 1830 Vassalborough census has Aaron White and his wife listed in the age 40-50 columns (she should have been 50-60). There are two males 10-15, one male 15-20, four females 15-20 and one female 20-30. The three males between 10-20 is puzzling since there was only one listed 10 years earlier in the 0-10 column. The 1840 Vassalborough census shows Aaron White age 50-60, his wife 60-70, one male 10-15, one female 10-15, and one female 20-30. The 1850 Vassalboro census taken August 16 shows Aaron White, age 65 (confirms 1785 birth date) living with Mary White, age 49 and no children. Since you have an 1846 date of death for Sarah, it appears that he remarried before 1850. Levi Smart, age 69, is the listing right after Aaron White. You may want to focus on him as a possible brother of Sarah. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: smarttom Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1669.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a small reference in this Vassalboro history that may give you clues to other Sarah SMART relatives. It says: "John S. Briggs, born in 1848, is the son of George U., and grand-son of William Briggs, of Augusta. He married Lizzie J., daughter of Ira and granddaughter of Levi Smart, and has three children: Ora L., Delmont S. and Gladys Lefa. Mr. Briggs' farm at Cross Hill was formerly occupied by Aaron White. Levi Smart was born in 1780, in New Hampshire, and came to Monmouth, Me., with his father, Robert, who settled on Smart's hill, on the stage road between Winthrop and Lewiston, whence Levi removed to Vassalboro, where he died in 1853." Since John BRIGGS took over Aaron WHITE's farm, and married Lizzie J. SMART, perhaps she and Sarah are related. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: leslievaughn Surnames: SMART; WHITE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1669/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a large brick wall with Sarah SMART. She married Aron WHITE on 31 Aug 1805 probably in Readfield Maine. They were the parents of at least 6 daughers: Caroline born about 1806, Sarah born about 1808, Philina born about 1809, Cordelia, born 12 July 1812, Louisa born 11 May 1812, Betsey White born 17 Sept 1815. Note that Cordelia and Louisa are born the same year but different months. These birth dates are as indicated on each woman's tombstone. But based on other records, they are sisters, so at least one tombstone is wrong. Sarah Smart White died march 29 1846. Her headstone says she was 72. Question: Where was Sarah Smart Born? Who were her parents? Did she have more children? Who were her siblings? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
