Author: essexclark Surnames: Conduit, Alford, Smart, Timms Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.smart/1678/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have a copy of the birth record of the first known child of Henry John Conduit and Sarah Emma Alford, Sarah Emma b. 1859 (m. SMART) or the 3rd known child, Selina Jane b. 1852 (m. TIMMS)? I was looking at the birth record of their 2nd child Henry John jnr (aka John Henry) b. 29 Apr 1860. The copy is not clear but under the marriage of the parents where it lists previous issue there are 3 lines: 1 boy (there is a } connecting line 1 & 2) 1 girl } living (this would be Sarah Emma) 1 boy dead This seems to indicate that Henry and Sarah had 2 other previously unknow male children before 1860 and it is possible that a reference to them is also on Sarah Emma or Selina Jane's birth records registered in Belfasr (Pt Fairy). There is no reference to these 2 boys on the birth record of younger son William Henry in 1869. The other thing that I noticed is time between the birth of Sarah and Henry. I have not seen an original of Sarah's birth record but I have been told she was born 13 Sep 1859. That is only 7 months 16 days and would make Henry John a premature baby. Can anyone confirm the date of birth for Sarah Emma? Henry and Sarah married in Woodford, Wilts on 1 Sep 1856 (date from original rec) and sailed for Australia 5 Oct 1856 arriving in Belfast (now Port Fairy) on 17 Jan 1857. Little time to have had children before they left England or did Sarah have an illegitimate child there? She could have been pregnant when they married and the first child born and died at sea. Otherwise both boys were born in Belfast and at least one died there. The other could have died anywhere between Belfast, Plesant Creek (Stawell) and Moyston. I would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this subject. She had told us her moms name was Sarah Smart, and she had died at about 23-28 years old. I think my grandma was about 5 or so. Eveline Curliss(my grandma was born april 3, 1913. She had to go into an orphange when her mom had died. Not sure who her dad was. She remeber her grandparents, had taken her from the orphange and threw her in the trunk. (sounds like she was kidnapped) she remebers thinking that the rich guy in town was her dad. Because he treated her nice. My grandma was born in Indianna, but she said she didnt have a birthcertificate and at one year of age a cradle roll was done for her. I did at one time found and Elizabeth sarah smart, that was about the right age, but I had forgotten to save the information. now I can't find it. It is well known that families traveled together and intermarried. By joining DNA studies we may be able to uncover links that have all but vanished. There are DNA tests for direct line male descendants called yDNA tests that trace direct male lines. There are direct female tests called mtDNA tests that trace direct female lines. And most recently there are FAMILY FINDER tests that locate people of any gender with sufficiently close DNA markers to indicate fairly close cousinhood between individuals in the study. For information on such tests check any reputable DNA lab. If you already have one or more DNA tests available and have ancestors in Horry County area prior to 1810, please consider joining the Horry County South Carolina DNA group. If you do not yet have DNA tests, consider getting one or more. These can be obtained in a strategic manner to maximize the information-such as convincing a male direct line individual such as your father or brother to give a DNA sample and doing as many tests as possible on that individual. I have been lucky enough to convince two male second cousins, my father, and my maternal uncle to join. That means I am able to tell when someone is kin to one or two which line the match might come from. Let's knock down some brick walls!
