I agree with the issues you have raised and have been trying to solve this problem. Apparently, I am not the only one, judging by the fact that I have yet to find any solid documentation confirming a connection between Francis Smart and my John Smart of Howland, ME (1819-1900). I will let you know if I solve the riddle. It looks like the Smarts moved slowly North from Exeter to Kittery to Brunswick, Waldo, Bangor and then the Howland,Maxfield, Sebois areas. Fascinating to read so much history about these towns and the Smarts. Frustrating that I can't nail down the link. Maybe my John Smart isn't related to the rest but came down from Canada as a relatively recent immigrant. Oh well it keeps my old brain firing. All I can find is my John Smart married Betsy Hilton around 1760 in Rockingham County. Betsy was d/o Edward & Elizabeth Hilton. The land records show when they were given land, bought land and the probate for John who died abt July 1773 and know they had at least 2 son's, Hilton(d/1796 at sea) & John both who have property. If it wasn't for land deeds I wouldn't know anything except for the 1806, 7 & 8 tax records when show John(s/o John & Betsy)when he sold his land and moved to Maine. The other issue I see with Francis is the posted marriage to Sarah Deering. His will is on Ancestry.com and it says he gave his whole estate to his wife Mary. After her death, it passes to "his beloved kindred William Barter, Sarah Grindal, and Elizabeth and Martha Jones." This suggests he and Mary did not have any children. A second source that verifies this is the "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", which lists Francis Smart, husbandman of Kittery, married to Mary Crockett: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=gendime&rank=1&new=1&so=3&MSAV=0&msT=1&gss=ms_db&gsfn=francis&gsln=smart&uidh=fbz. Under "Crockett", we see Ephraim and wife Ann of Kittery and a listing for a daughter Ann who married Francis Smart. This source also mentions his will and no children are listed. Looking further, it appears the three "kindred" women in the will all had the Barter maiden name, so you may want to look for links there to either his or Mary Crockett's family. That same dictionary shows a number of Sarah Deerings, one of whom was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Deering, and was married by 1727 to Francis Deed of Kittery, a mariner. They had a child Elizabeth. This could be where your error is on her. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Have you investigated it? The one link I see there that seems speculative is the father of Francis, b. 1685. I do not think it was John, son of Robert as shown with a birth date of 1650. Other sources show Robert's son John as born in Exeter, NH c1646, marrying first Eliza in NH, divorcing in 1697, and marrying second Elizabeth ________ and going to live in New York city where he died in 1705 with no known children. It doesn't seem that Francis could have been born in Kittery ME from this second marriage. The Smart genealogy entitled "John Smart of Exeter, NH & Seven Generations" by H.B. Leslie indicates that Robert's brother John Jr. moved from Exeter to Kittery ME, and it would seem more likely that Francis is one of his descendants. Hi Bill, I have seen some books on the Smart's but mostly those of Penobscot County but they all seemed to have come from Rockingham County, NH early 1800's. Somerset County is hard to find much info other then reading the Town Orders from the different towns which you have to read page by page and the writing is not real clear BUT if your ancestors came from Somerset County it's a great read. I myself enjoy checking the land records and that is how I found my Smart's came from NH. Is your Schultz/Smart line on Ancestry? I couldn't find it. Do you have Smart's in Somerset County? Please send me your Ancestry abby so I can check it out. Smart July 11, 2011 The Express Captain (retired) Kenneth R. Smart, 64, of Salona, passed away on July 6, 2011 at the Gate House, Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport, God just needed a very special man to fill a heavenly void. A choir of heavenly angels sang outside his hospital door and when the singing stopped he had no pain anymore. With all the love and strength she had inside her, his loving wife released him into the loving arms of our Lord, knowing they would again be together next time for eternity. He was born on May 25, 1947 in Lock Haven, a son of Robert K. Smart and the late Shirley N. Barrett Smart. Ken and his wife, the former Sue (Alice) Everett, formally from Caribou, Maine, were united in marriage on October 19, 1968 in the United Baptist Church in Caribou. He was a 1965 graduate of Bald Eagle Nittany High School and graduated cum laude from Troy University, Alabama, in 1976 with a BS in Computer Science. Education was always important to Ken and he always encouraged people (young and old) to obtain as much knowledge and education that was available to them. He was an Air Force veteran with 21 years of service to his country and 2 1/2 tours of duty in Vietnam. After spending 11 years as an enlisted member of the Air Force, Ken was accepted into the Officer Training Academy. After serving 10 years as an Air Force Officer, he retired on December 31, 1986 with the rank of Captain at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Ken received numerous military medals and ribbons and in 1978 was awarded the 552nd AWAC WG Company Grade Officer of the year at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. He was employed at Penn State University as an information systems analyst, retiring on December 31, 2010 due to his declining health. He had also been a teacher at South Hills for over five years. Ken was a member of several organizations over the years and most recently was the treasurer and life member of the Southern Clinton County Sportsmen Club. His greatest joy for the past 11 years was being coordinator of the Youth Field Day event held every year at the Sportsmen Club, in which over 120 youths got to spend the day participating in numerous outside sporting and nature events. He was an avid Penn State Football fan as well as a Boston Red Sox fan. He not only enjoyed watching sports, he also participated in sports; playing softball, golf, hiking and hunting. He loved being the coach of his wife's top winning women's softball team in Anchorage, Alaska. Ken loved spending time in the great outdoors just enjoying natures many wonders. He is survived by his wife, Sue (Alice); his father Robert and step-mother Kathryn; three sisters, Madelyn Johnson of North Carolina, Pam (Jim) Ripp of Nevada and Eva Hahn of Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Betty and (Arthur) Fortin, Jenny (Ronnie) Rafford; one brother-in-law, George (Carol) Everett all of Caribou, Maine and numerous special nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a great- great nephew. He was predeceased by his mother Shirley; sister Cathy Donahay, and father-in-law Thomas Everett and mother-in-law Olive Everett. Ken will be greatly missed by many friends he had made over his lifetime; his very special neighbors Chad and Deb Karstetter, his "little girlfriend" Leah Karstetter and especially by his three little buddies Tazza, Abbey and Smorezee. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home 24 Reservoir St. Caribou Monday 7 -9 p.m. A funeral service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 from the chapel of Mockler Funeral Home with Rev. John Kiehn Officiating. A committal service will be held Thursday July 14, 2011 at the Maine Veterans Cemetery. Locally, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2011 at the First Church of Christ, 330 N. Vesper St. Lock Haven.
