I have made my 3rd trip to St. Mary's Cemetery on Genesee in Waukegan Illinois. This historic cemetery is located on Sheridan Road. If you are at all familiar when you enter the main gate, on the left side of the drive, is the re-burial location of those moved from Olivet Cemetery. Last summer I made two trips there and found some vandalized monuments, many worn, covered by sod, mud and/or none at all. Yesterday I took another trip there and found the fence on that side has a big hole in it, more monuments have been vandalized since last year, and more stones either grown over by sod or covered with mud. Also many of the stone faces are wearing away. I am aware that the families of those interred here are either no longer alive or do not live in the area. My question is, how much more can we let this part of the cemetery deteriorate, our ancestors forgotten and desecrated, and a future where these same plots will be "resold" because the markers are gone and more "income" can be made. For me it was a very upsetting experience and what can be done to preserve this part of our history? I will be posting some photos that show just a minor part of the destruction there on my web page http://communities.msn.com/genealogy2000 Mary ===== MY WEB PAGES: http://genealogy2002.tripod.com http://communities.msn.com/genealogy2000 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
