    3. Has anybody been to the diocesan archive of Maribor and can tell me about it? For example: If I first have to get an appointment before I can go there, or how much does it cost to have a look at the parish books, how is the quality of the documents, is it easy to read, can I bring my laptop, can I make copies and how much do they cost. Thank you in advance

    3. Been there. Done that. Yes, have an appointment. The nun who helped me spoke Slovene and German. I was fortunate to have along my Slovene cousin who spoke some English. Bring your laptop, but I don't know if you'll get much done. Not only is some of the parish book handwriting bad, but it's written in archaic script in Austrian for the old records. After a couple hours of frustration, I decided to commission the archive to do my research--a wise move. They're slow but the do good work. A couple of months after I got home, an envelope showed up with just what I needed. Unfortunately, the church records for my grandparent's lineage went back to only 1846.
