As far as them actually being German or Jewish I do know from conversations with my grandfather they identified with Slovenian nationality. I do suppose that decent could be one of the three or various parts. Josef/Joseph Katz, my gr-grandfather, remarried after Juliana Zager, his wife, died around the mid to late teens (1914-1919). He then married Sophia Novak who was Josef's best friend's sister. I think that they were friends from the old county.
