Specifically, I'm trying to identify where my great grandparents Michael and Anna Hegedus Hotra came from. I believe Michael (Mikita) Hotra 1873-1937 came over on the Kensington, arriving 23 May 1900 in New York. He is listed as Austrian-Hungarian on the ship manifest, and his last place of residence was Suhá, which is in modern-day Slovenia. The 1900 census puts him in Hahntown, North Huntingdon, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. The 1910 census lists him as Austrian-Slovenian. Also of note, the Kensington ship manifest stated that he was on his way to join his brother-in-law Mike Solják in United, PA (Mount Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania); however, I can't find anyone that I can confirm to be Mike Solják (whom I might then link to Michael's sister). Michael Hotra was a coal miner, and based on his location, I believe that he worked in the Penn Gas No. 2 mine (Adams Mine, Hahntown Mine). Anna Hegedus Hotra 1886-1932 came over to the United States in 1904. I believe she arrived on the Aurania on 19 Jan 1904 in New York. This leaves her enough time to travel to Pennsylvania, meet Michael, marry, and have their first child Mary by 1905. Anna's last place of residence on the ship manifest is listed as what I can only decipher as Kiozte, which I can't find anywhere. The 1910 census also listed Anna as Austrian-Slovenian. The ship manifest stated that she was joining her father Andr. Hegedus in Penn, PA (Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania). I have not found Andr. Hegedus. Any knowledge of the Hotras or how to research in Slovenia would be extremely helpful. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
