Author: ALevijoki Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.general/6586/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information on John and Frances Turk TUSEV. They were married on 20 May 1908 in Calumet Houghton County Michigan USA. His parents were Frank TISEV and Mary KESNER. Her parents were Frank TURK and Mary ILLER. They lived in Ribnica in south-central Slovenia. They had two sons that I know of: John, Jr. born 1909 in Calumet Houghton County Michigan USA and Frank born 8 June 1911 also in Calumet. I have a 1910 census showing that they lived in Calumet. Apparently, they went back to Europe after 1911. Frank was in a concentration camp during WWII in northern Italy. He came back to the USA in 1952. I have not been able to find out anything on this family. Frances is the sister of my grandfather John TURK born 12 October 1880 in Stopic, Slovenia died August, 1923 in Calumet, Michigan. Does any of this seem familiar to anyone? Thank you in advance. Author: meksmk1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.general/6583.1.1.1.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for such good information. I'm learning so much about how to search and the translation issue. Hocevar is such a common surname. My grandfather changed our last name to Kotchevar about a year after he arrived because he was tired of getting mail for the other Joseph Hocevars in town. That's how common it was were he settled. That's the biggest problem I face in my search. I think I've got a match and upon closer inspection, my hopes are dashed. My grandfather was born in a town close to Skofljica in Blato he told my uncle. The only Blato close is Gorenje Blato. But town names change over time I'm finding. He was born in house #5. In the early 1980's the house still stood according to my uncle when he went over to visit Slovenia. You would think with a house number and everything I would be able to get somewhere. Author: meksmk1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.general/6583.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is very interesting. The date that my uncle gave me as to her immigraton was 1913. He said the that's what my grandfather told him. But memories fade with time. This date is within a couple of weeks of when my grandfather came over. He came over on the La Savoie the sister ship to the La Lorraine. He also boarded at Le Havre and arrived Oct 30, 1911. The one clue that is catching me is the mother's name. I was told it was Mary. I've looked at my Slovenian Mary translations and Marietta is not one. I'll have to talk to my uncle again to make sure it was really Mary now. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Not sure if you are familiar with the publications of Richard E. Cowling who wrote about Austro-Hungarian immigrants in Colorado. His publications can be found in the Lake County (Leadville, CO and Denver, Libraries. I reviwed my copy of his publication, Colorado Genealogical Etcetera Volume XV -1991- Austro Hungarian and other Immigrants Lake County, Colorado, that contained 7 page references to Krizman, none referenced Maria or a HOCEVAR marriage, One reference to a HOCEVAR (Agnes). You are probably aware that US variant spellings of H. I spoke to Richard Cowling many years ago at which time he was working on a HOCEVAR and variant spellings of that name for Colorado A-H I. immigrants, I am unsure if he ever published a document on that research. I am researching my GM, Maria HOCEVAR. of Primcavas #19, 'Kovac". b. 1878. I have multiple generations identi! fied.. Large families in which the given name Joseph is prevalent. None match the dob of 1893 for your Joseph. You mention "Blato" I have not cofirmed my suspicions but believe it is not that distant from Primcavas (Ambrus Parish?). I realize this is really speculatI in that HOCECAR is very common surname. but it sounds like you are at a dead end. I offer it for what it is. My GGF,GM & rsiblings emigrated to Northern Minnesota! Just about anything. I have all this information. It would seemm I could find something. But I've really gotten nowhere for a year. I know I have cousins in Slovenia and one that works as a journalist. Mary was in Colorado (Denver at least for a while) and had children and married a Bao we think. But everywhere I turn is a dead end. Can't find Mary's immigration record. So I'm hoping that someone "out there" might recognize the combination of individuals and say "I know them." I've conatacted people in Slovenia. But have a hard time trusting someone working on an hourly wage thousands of miles away.
