Do you know if your GGF came from Visnja gora or rather from one of the surrounding villages? In Visnja gora, I can't find any similar sounding last names, but things change in 100 years - with a little imagination, the family name could be Vrhovec now, there are families by that name in today's Visnja gora and Kamno brdo. Author: Tina_PS Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.general/6599.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm Slovene, and I never heard of the last name Ihweiss. It doesn't even sound like today's Slovene last name. Ihweiss could roughly be transcribed into the German "ich weiss", meaning "I know", though the Slovene translation "jaz vem" again doesn't sound like a last name. Zitta is a German name, while Franciska is Slovene. So I would think that it's Zitta's married name, as the Slovene version of the name Zitta would be Cita - probably Felicita in the "original". Maybe Cecilija, but probably not. I just went through the phonebook for Trzin. It's a long shot, but baybe the last names of Hvasti and Ipavec could be behind Ihweiss... Ipavec is a quite common last name in Slovenia, so I'm leaning towards that one. And never trust Ellis island records - not even typed, it could be a transcription of some sort. I live quite near Trzin, I could go check the graveyard for you when the weather normalizes - rain, cold and baby buggies do not go together well. I'm guessing Zitta could have been born around the year 1900? T I N A Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her sister's name is Zitta Ihweiss. I can't find any record of Zitta Ihweiss anywhere. I am trying to find out if Ihweiss Is my GreatGrandmother's maiden name or Zitta's maried name. He was born in Svibnik, Lower Carniola, Austria-Hungary (now- Slovenia). He was a German speaking Catholic. Peter C Stublers father was Peter Stubler, b: 1816. Additionally, Peter C. Stubler went back to Svibnik in 1888, to visit. Don't know where his father and mother died. I do know that Peter - the senior, was in the USA for around 20 years. I have been trying to determine the relationships between senior Stublers, George, Peter and Nicholas, if any. I have charted Nicholas Stubler tree using the known info. I have much more info on Peter and George, since they lived in my hometown, Oil City, PA. I have relatives that married offspring of both. It is located in the south/eastern part of Slovenia. Svibnik is a tiny village just outside Crnomelj. Either the tiny village or the city is used to describe where someone is from - there is no hard and fast rule. Getting to the LDS to look up the birth records for Crnomelj would give some more information on his parents. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
