Hi All I am interested in finding any information on the family of Jacob OVEN and Frances POZNIK of Strahomer, Slovenia. Jacob and Frances had 13 children, among them were: Josef (my grandfather), born 1875; Anton, the youngest, born 1886; Gertrude; and Rose, who died at 16 years old from tuberculosis. Several of the other children died during the same year (?) from an epidemic. Anton married Elizabeth GLAVEN in Ljubljana in 1910. Joseph and Anton are the only ones known to have immigrated, both moving to Eveleth, MN. Joseph married Marija TRONTELJ in 1907 in Eveleth, MN. There was a John POZNIK, b 1875, who married Helen REBOL in 1901 at Ely, MN, who is believed to be a brother (?) to Frances. I would appreciate any information on this family or any other researchers involved with these surnames. Thanks for your time. Kim miller asked, Sun, 6 Feb 2000 I am of Slovak ancestry. Is this the same as Slovenia? No, Kim, Slovaks are from Slovakia, formerly the eastern end of the former Czechoslovakia. Slovenians are from Slovenia, formerly part of Yugoslavia. The confusion often stems from the fact they both use "Slovensko" to describe themselves. I have heard that the two peoples were once the same, but that the invading eastern tribes split them and formed what is now Hungary. The two languages have the same origin but eight hundred years or more have made them quite different. Can anyone add more facts to this? John
Good morning! Does anyone have suggestions on how to send funds to Slovenia? My understanding was the best way was to get an international money order, as that would not cost the recipient any money to cash there. However, my post office, bank, my sister's bank, do not have them! What to do? I want the best way so the recipient won't bear any monetary burden to cash it, and I also don't want to spend a fortune myself to get a mode of mailing it! One of the bank people suggested getting an alternate currency one: German, Italian, Gr. Britain or even U.S. Comments/help please? Thanks in advance. Anna in MN [email protected]
SKRABAN, Terezija (Theresa) 1888-1967 Born Murska Sobota YUG (Slovenia) her mother's maiden name was SIFTAR her father was Joseph Skraban. Theresa's birth certificate listed them as farmers. I believe the address on the certificate was Strukovci st. 21. The certificate also shows "Krajevni ured Bodonci" in the upper left corner. Not sure what this means, other than Bodonci is a town north of Murska Sobota. If the translation from her birth certificate is correct, her godparents were Stefan GYERJEK and Lajos SINIC. I have no info on them but their names. Theresa married Joseph KOVACH (later changed to KOVACS) 1886-1965 He may have been born in Veszprem Megye, HUN. They settled in Northampton CO, Bethlehem, PA Known children of Joseph and Theresa Kovacs are: 1. Joseph Jr (m. Theresa REITER) 2. Katherine (m. Frank KONYA) 3. Frank (m. Gizzella GRABAR) 4. James 5. Hello - Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding information about Pola, Istria, where my grandfather was born around 1870. Pola was then part of the Austrian empire, next to Italy, and later became part of Yugoslavia. Linda Schrom [email protected]
I need some help with Passanger Ship Records and where to look? When family living in either Matlika, Slovenia or Lokve, Slovenia left for the US between 1860-1875 what port would they most likely leave from, and what US port would they most likely come into? Thanks for the help. Jane Klees [email protected]
Hi I'm searching for my great grandfather Jacob Grahek. He was born in 1840. I think possibly he could have been from what is now Slovenia. As I'm new to family searching in Slovenia could someone please tell me a few good websites to get me started? Thanks. Also, I think I have found another family link of another Grahek that was born in Metlika Slovenia. Her name was Katherine Grahek and she was born in 1897. She married a Rudoph Kremesec who was also born in Metlika in 1893. I know that using church records to find information can be helpful. How do I go about finding church records for Metlika? Thanks for the help. Jane Klees [email protected]

Hello listers, I have the following family that I am trying to investigate: TRONTELJ, Anton--b 1828, d Nov 1898 Second marriage in 1877 to KOZLEVCAR, Marijana--b 1847, d Feb 1897. They had 3 girls in Smarje / fara Smarje; the village Zgornja Slivnica, Slovenia: Marija--b 13 Dec 1882 > USA > MN; d 27 Aug 1959 Ursula--b fall 1884, stayed in Slovenia Frances--b 05 Sep 1887 > USA > MN; d 04 Jul 1965 Although it is believed that Anton served in the Austrian Army about 1848-1860 and allegedly obtained 2 medals, the Austrian Archives were unable to pursue without a regiment, which I do not have at this time. Would a birth certificate for Marija (my maternal grandmother) yield a birthplace and/or date for either of her parents? Would a death certificate for either/both of her parents be possible to be obtained with just a month and year? Does anyone know the address to which I could send such a request? Both great grandparents were of the Catholic faith. Would any of these documents be on microfilm at the Family History Centers? That is my next attempt at obtaining information on this family, although I will not be able to get to one any time soon. Most of this information comes from an oral history passed down to another descendant, who has since passed away. Thank you for any help or direction anyone can give me.
