Hi Phyllis, I assume, you overlooked my replay to you: For the word "gostac" it's so: Slovenian dictionary will not recognize it, because it's not in use any more. It was meaning for person, who hadn't had any of self property, so he/she must travel around and find work at house with a lot of land/vineyard. The root of this word is 'guest'. The word "samski hlapec" stands for stableman which is unmarried. Greetings I just received my first documents back from the Ljubljana Archives--yes, it is exciting!--and one of the items I requested was not sent. According to the letter I received, it stated: Porocnega lista za Matevza Steblaj in Marijo Vidmar Vam ne moremo poslati, ker je procna knjjiga za leto 1804 za zupnijo Ig izgubljena. Does this really state that the book from 1804 was destroyed, and therefore no marriage document could be sent for my people? Thanks for your assistance! I have a couple of words I hope someone can translate for me. I've tried my Slovene Dictionary but can't seem to find them. There are 3 causes of deaths. These documents were received from Ljubljana. They are: Hinfallende, Engbrustigkeit and Schwache. Another item is what I believe "age at death". It says 1 Tag. I am guessing it is 1 "Day". One more item is the following phrase: samski hlapec in gostac. I can find the first two words which are single, farmhand. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I received a packet of wonderful documents from Ljubljana. The letter was written in Slovenian also. I've been able to decipher most of it with my dictionary but there are a couple of paragraphs that I am not sure of. I can figure out some of the words but not enough to get the idea of the sentence. Would anyone be able to help? Thanks. Iskali smo tudi porocni list za Matija Lipovsek, ki se je rodil 18.02.1807, vendar ni nobene sledi o njegovi poroki ali smrti v zupniji Cesnjice. Gregor Lipovsek, ki se je rodil 27.02.1826, je umrl zelo mlad, tako da se ni bil porocen in ni imel nobenega otroka. Bartolomej Lipovsek je umrl takoj po rojstvu, tako da ni bil porocen. Janez Lipovsek pa je ostal samski in je umrl kot hlapec v letu 1915. Porocnega lista za Casparja Lipovsek in Margaretho Lipovsek nismo nasli, saj so porocne maticne knjige za to obdobje zelo poskodovane. Obstaja moznost, da je vpis unicen. Lahko pa sta se porocila v kateri od sosednjih zupnij. Mi smo pregledali vse sosednje zupnije, pa poroke nismo nasli. V zupniji Dob za to obdobje manjka knjiga. Lahko da sta se tu porocila, pa ju tako ne najdemo. Taksa za en izpisek je 10 USD, kar znasa 11 x 10 USD-110 USD. Prosimo, da nam jo posljete v priporocenem pismu na nas gornji naslov. Reading the old German is not as tough as you think. I took a class in it at BYU 27 years ago and still have all my old papers that tells what each letter means. I will try and scan it later on this afternoon or tomorrow. One thing--the handwritten "e" looks just like our letter "n"--I have both the handwritten and printed letters in German--of course once you get the letters transposed from the old german to the modern german--you will still need it translated from german into english.
