And a veeeeeeery loooooooong shot - could be the surname Macek, as the German word for cat/macek is Katze, and maybe someone translated his name? Macek is quite a frequent surname in Slovenia, while Kac is not that frequent. Godork doesn't ring any bells. In today's Slovenia Cadrg (near Tolmin) looks similar as far as spelling - are you sure that is what you read on Ellis? There are a few Zagers still in Slovenia (according to the phonebook), none of them in a Godork-sounding place. Zagar is a much more frequent name around here. According to Shtetl seeker (http://www.jewishgen.org/) similar sounding places in Austria are Gatteregg, Hütteregg and Katereck. My gr-grandfather left the Austrian Army (AWOL?) before WW1. When he arrive in the US his name was entered as Katz. He was attempting to have the name corrected at the court house in Kansas City but rumor at the time was the US was sending people back to their home countries. He was Slovenian and was said to have been born in Trava. My question is what Slovenian name would sound like Katz. We are trying to trace him back to Slovenia but without his real last name it has been impossible. My gr-grandmother was Juliana Zager and according to Ellis Island record her residence was a town named Godork (Austria). I can not find a town named Godork in modern day Austria or Slovenia. Als das bis dahin neutrale Italien als neues Mitglied der Triple Entente an Österreich-Ungarn am 23. Mai 1915 Krieg erklärte und damit wenige Kilometer nordwestlich der Stadt eine Front entstand, mussten viele Ausländer wie James Joyce Triest verlassen. Die italienfreundliche Einstellung der meisten Triestiner führte zu scharfer Überwachung der Stadt durch die k.u.k. Militärbehörden. Erst 1917 verlagerte sich die Front an den weiter entfernten Piave. Am 29. Oktober 1918 wurde der neue südslawische Staat, der SHS-Staat, gegründet. Er schnitt Österreich von der Adria ab. Ein Vertreter der zerfallenen k.u.k. Armee unterzeichnete am 3. November 1918 bei Padua den Waffenstillstand von Villa Giusti. The names you mentioned are very much domaci names and are part of the culture in Gorski Kotar either side of the Slovenian and Croation Borders. Fiume (Rijefa is on the coast and down the mountain from Cabar and is currently in Croatia. (Fiume is its Italian name and is strongly influence by Italy. Hallo/Živjo Just for information for those interested in. Being lately in Ptuj/Pettau I discovered a quite interesting DVD-series about Slovenia, called "off the beaten track" with a lot of information about Štajerska/Untersteiermark. The odd thing about Slovenija is that the "English" videos are spoken in Italian with English subtitles.
