Author: oinker124 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.slovenia.general/6573/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to piece together some information on my great great grandparents. Their names are John (Janez) Klobuchar and Ursula Kochevar. John was born September 19, 1882 somewhere in Austro-Hungary. He immigrated to the US in about 1901. He married Ursula in about 1906-08, probably in Calumet Michigan. They show up on the census in Calumet in 1910. Race is Slovenian. John died in a mining accident in the Spruce Mine in Eveleth, Minnesota on Oct. 22, 1919. Ursula was born Oct. 20, 1888 in Austro-Hungary. Her naturalization papers say her last residence was Stopicia or Stopieia. She immigrated in 1906 from Bremen. She had a brother Anton who also lived in Eveleth. She died in 1963 in Eveleth. Any information or tips on researching this line would be greatly appreciated. Levi Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Oktober 2010 21:13 An: SLOVENIA@rootsweb.com Betreff: [SLOVENIA] Slovenian Parishes in Austria I am searching for names of Slovenian parishes whose records maybe held in Austria. I believe I read there are a few of these. I think this happened when the borders were drawn after WWI. I am not able to locate my Grandfathers birth record and do not know where he was born. I have reason to believe he was near Graz but born in Slovenia. Any ideas? "She is insane, of course. The family history has become a mania for her." As far as them actually being German or Jewish I do know from conversations with my grandfather they identified with Slovenian nationality. I do suppose that decent could be one of the three or various parts. Josef/Joseph Katz, my gr-grandfather, remarried after Juliana Zager, his wife, died around the mid to late teens (1914-1919). He then married Sophia Novak who was Josef's best friend's sister. I think that they were friends from the old county. Anyway, thanks again Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But there are several places called Podvrh in Slovenia. I hope this one really is the right one. As far as the Katz "variables" go, there is noone by that surname living around Draga (the first larger place near Trava) today. Though, if I look through last names appearing in the region, your Katz could maybe be Kec (in a place called Lazec), Keser or Klepac (in Podpreska), Kek (in Spodnja Draga). Who knows what was actually said in Ellis island and what was actually written down... With a little imagination, anything's possible. My grandfather said that he remembers the he was told that his mother Juliana Zager and his father Josef (joseph) Katz (maybe Kac) were married in Kansas City but had grew up in Slovenia (Austria) just over the hill from each other. If he was from Trava and she was from Podvrh then it looks like it can only be a few miles apart.
