Bill, Thanks for all the information on church Slavonic. Am I to assume that if I ordered a film from LDS of the Greek Catholic church that my G grandmother most likely went to that when I get the film I will put it on the reader and sit there and cry because it's in Cyrillic? Please tell me this isn't so. Thanks, Joyce
Church Slavonic was used until about the early 1800's in eastern Slovakia. Thereafter, Hungarian. This is especially true for Greek Catholic. Roman Catholic tended to use Latin, but Hungarian shows up a lot. Therefore, it's a good bet that your GP's, probably born late 1800's will have their names show up with the Roman alphabet. So print out and bring these guides with you: http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/ - the absolutely most important thing to bring http://www.fam.aust.com/topolcsany/names/ - Magyar/Latin/English/German given names seen most often in the old Hungarian empire. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sc/oconee/misc/foreign-names.txt - a general guide of several language given names useful especially when trying work backwards from an "Americanized" name. Don't dwell on analysis at the FHC. The most important thing you can do while at the reader is "harvest data". Collect as much info as you can - notes, copies, etc. You'll have 2 hours at the FHC and then another 22 hours at home to think about it. When I get a chance later this week, I'll scan some sample pages of my church ledgers to show you what you may be working with. Although I have seen Roman Catholic records, I have not worked with them. What religion will you be working with? This will tell you how to prepare. Good Luck and let us know what you find.
