Dear Jeannette, In searching the Ellis Island there appeared a family Jacob, Fran and Andrea from Meczenej and Mecznenef. Most of the folks with that surname came from Slovakia and what was considered Hungary at that time. Have you considered that they may be Slovak rather than German? This is a website that may point you in the right direction if you find that they are absolutely from Germany and not from any other country. www.calle.com Pull that URL up and then go to "World" and then to "Germany" and then to cities beginning with "Me" Hope that this may help you. Noreen
There were quite a few families who relocated to this region from Germany. From Metzenseifen, they emigrated to the U. S. with the majority starting in Cleveland Ohio. Because their existence in Metzenseifen was relatively short, I find no trace of them other then Metzenseifen and Cleveland. My mother remembers her grandmother speaking a German 'with a twist' and remembers there was a slight dialect attached to the language... I have researched Metzenseifen quite a bit and also have accessed the Metzenseifen web site as a 'poster'... (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~budlink/JT/WC_TOC.HTM includes a few links to Metzenseifen research...) Many of the Pimsner's on the Ellis Island web site are somehow connected - I recognize women who have returned to Metzenseifen for a 'visit' I would think or, to bring additional family members to the US...
