Hi Kat, I'd like to know more about your SLIVKA connection. I know we're in approximately the right area, but where is Zbudska Bela exactly? Here's what I know about my SLIVKA ancestors: My great grandmother Maria SLIVKA in Slovakia married Jan Ohriska and had three children that I know of: Jan Ohriska (1896-1969), Michal “Misho” Ohriska and Maria Ohriskova (1902-1983). I know nothing about Maria SLIVKA's parents or siblings. Their daughter Maria was my maternal grandmother. Son Jan’s first wife was Anna KOSTREJ. Jan and Anna lived in the village of Tasula, a few kilometers west of Jenkovce (and the present-day Ukranian border). Anna died giving birth to their son, Jan. According to the US Social Security Death Index on the Internet: John Ohriska was born c. Aug 21, 1896, died c. Nov, 1969. Residence: Elizabeth, Union, NJ 07202 SSN: 131-03-7033, issued in New York before 1951. Jan remarried to Maria “Mary” Duda (1910-2002). They lived in Jenkovce. Jan immigrated to the USA c. 1937, when daughter Margita was 3 months old. He stayed until his wife and children arrived from Europe, returning to “the old country” only once to build a house and barn for the family. Maria immigrated to the USA with children Margaret and Joseph c. April, 1949. They traveled to the US on the historic R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, the world’s largest ocean liner at the time. Michal “Misho” Ohriska married Anna Cibere from Jenkovce. The couple had a son who lived in Michalovce. Misho committed suicide in his 30’s. Maria Ohriskova, born in Jenkovce, married my grandfather Juraj “George” Oresky (1901-1981) from the nearby village of Bezovce. George immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1926, followed by Mary and their firstborn son George in 1929. They had two more children in Toronto: Mary (my mother) and John.
