    3. I'm researching the surnames Nuter, Slivka etc. from the villages of Jasenia and Predajna near Banska Bystrica which I believe are in the district of Zvolen. Can someone tell me how to determine what LDS census or church films would give me information for families from these areas? Thanks any help offered!! Judie Mason

    3. Hi Judy, There are several films for the area of Banaka Bystrica... It appears that area of Slovakia was originally part of Hungary, the former area of Beszterczebanya...yeah, that' s a mouthful, isn't it. There are church records filmed for the Roman Catholic church from 1628 to 1909, and they contain baptism, marriage and death records in Latin and Hungarian. Film numbers: 1983117 Items 6 & 7 1982768 1982769 1982770 1982771 1982772 1982773 2002700 2002701 2002702 Items 1 & 2 There are also Evangelical Church records from 1743 - 1901. They contain baptism, marriage, and death records in Latin, Hungarian, German and Slovak. Film numbers: 2007702 Item 3 2007703 2007704 2007705 2007706 2007707 Each of the film numbers have different years filmed on them, so if you have some type of idea when your people were there, it will help you narrow down which films to start with. I know it looks formidable, but thanks to the LDS films, I have my father's lines documented back to the mid 1600s and early 1700s in Slovakia. It took a while but was well worth the time I spent! Good luck in your searches! 3. Judie, My family is from Brezno, about a 20 minute drive from Banska Bystrica. Go to the family search page and look at the catalog for the LDS library. Put in your town names, without a country. When I do this, I get Brezno, Slovakia and Brezno, Hungary. It's the same place - just different time frames. For my town there are Catholic, Evangelical (Lutheran) and Jewish records. Do you know what religious affiliation your family might have had? I was fortunate to have much information to get me started, including the birth dates of both great-grandparents and knowledge that they were Lutheran. The Lutheran records go back to 1787, then I had to go into the Catholic records - interestingly, within the Catholic records I found people noted to be Lutheran - if you - or anyone else - has questions about this, I can provide some information. Good luck! Lorrie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith A. Mason" <judith.mason@ameritech.net> To: <SLOVAKIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2002 1:10 PM Subject: Help!
