The most commonly accepted term for the language is Slovak (Slovensky' in Slovak). Extensive wordlists just don't exist. Even dictionaries are difficult to find, it will probably be a few more years before Slovak based translation documents are easily found. However, from a genealogical standpoint, they aren't necessary, most records are in Latin, Hungarian, and sometimes German. I was asked by some members where they could find a Latin word source. Most of the Latin I respond to is what I remember. I have received copies of information from another person and I need to know what it is I'm looking at. I am not familiar with this kind of information. At the top of one page is the word MATRICULA and another is COPULATORUM. Under these words is the word SPONSI. I think they are sponsor sheets but I can't be sure. They are written in another language but I can see some of the names I am researching. They are for the years 1897-1900. Can someone explain these for me? Thanks for your help. Darlene

Latin: Matricula = records, register, book Copulatrum = it means bound as in marriage (copulatio = marriage) (copulatus = married) (etc.) Sponsi = (a little more difficult) it does have to do with people and usually means: sponsi = groom sponsae = bride You're welcome. I believe that this aunt, who married a NEMET and lived in Louisiana, was a SPISAK (pronounced by PISHAK by my grandmother's family members) My grandmother's given name was Julianna, and I believe that may also have been the given name of her aunt. The aunt "raised two boys", but my source didn't know whether they were her children or grandchildren, etc. The only communication I heard of was of the NEMET aunt "sending strawberries" (jam?) to Barberton, Ohio from Louisiana (ca 1920s? early 1930s?) I think that I found them in the 1910 and 1920 census, but they are no longer in that same parish. They may have moved to Baton Rouge. My mother (b. 1900) and my grandmother (b. 1883) were born in Somodi, Abauj-Torna Varmegye, Hungary. The village is now called Drienovec, and is in okres Kosice, Slovakia. The census taker must have been confused by these people being "Hungarian" and speaking "Magyar"., because first entries were crossed out and a "correction" entered. The spelling of the name could have been changed to NAMATH or NEMETH, etc. Originally there would be an accent over the first "E" in NEMET. Hi Janet, My Pavelek's are from the High Tatra region. If you go to expidia.com you can get a map of the town my Pavelek's are from, Huty, Slovakia. I don't know if any of the Pavelek's emigrated. I have 2 films at the Family History Library of Huty church records. I haven't done a lot of searching for the Pavelek line yet. My Great Grandmother was Maria Pavelek, born in Huty Sept. 12, 1857, married Jozef Zivnostka in Huty on Jan. 27, 1879. Her parents were Joseph Pavlek and Theresia Rurska. None of these people emigrated. It was my Grand mother, Caroline Zivnostka, who did in abt. 1904. The lake you mention is not far from Huty. I was in Slovakia last fall to meet relatives and see the towns my Grand Parents were born in. It is a beautiful area! When I get time to go through the Huty film I will keep my eyes opened for a George and Ignatius. I probably won't go back through the film for a while though.
