Hello! I am interested in the families PRASNICKI, PRASNICKY, PRZASNYCKI, PRASNYSKI and similar spellings Martin Prasnicki
Can anyone tell me what this means?: Na vol'nom liste zoznam domácnostÃ, 1860 Krstenà 1878-1888 It is part of a listing for the village of Nyársardó, Saros (now Raznany). It comes after christenings, marriages, burials and confirmations. Thank you. Donna
I found a Jurik who came from Kolpeny in 1905. Ellis Island lists it as Volpeny but several people are listed on the same sheet as Kolpeny. His first name is Janos. My grandfather was "Joe". He went to Mansfield, Ohio. I would have guessed Lebanon, Pa. The reason I am really curious about this person is he went to his brother in law "Mike Pekovsky". Now the Petosky, Peckovsky, etc. I am possibly related to was Stefan and lived in Lebanon, Pa later in 1905 but there seem to be so few "Peckovsky's" in the Ellis Island manifests I am wondering if this isn't just too much of a coincidence not to be followed up. I am looking for a Frank Vargo that would have been 39 years old in 1901 when he came to Ellis Island. He lived in Bonne Terre, Mo. for a while, then moved to???? He was from Fenik Huta (Pheonix Huta), Slovakia and had been in the US once before between 1896-1899. He might be a sibling to our Mike Vargo? Sharon
Steve, Looks like: Imrich, male, legitimate child, Imrich's father was Andrej Janic and mother looks like Zuzanna Krajnik the godparents look like ?? Kravec and Anna ??? who both were Roman Catholic the priest was Stefan Kuzmi??e and they made no comments regarding confirmation, death, marriage etc etc in the last box entitled Observationes. Along the top it says that it is in the district of Sabinov and the diocese is Presov. my belief is that the date along the bottom is the date that it was copied from the book and given to the person who sent it to you. there is missing the entire left four spaces which would give the exact date of birth and the exact date of baptism. you can see where there was more to this paper. Presov was Eperies in 1866. That is why I beleive the date is a copy date along the bottom. If this were a copy of the actual book, the diocese would have been Eperies not Presov. also, there are always about ten to fifteen entries per page. very unusual to have only one entry. (unless it was the end of the book.) so i believe you have a copy of the original entry into the ledger at the time of the baptism in 1866. now what you need to do is request the Latter Day Saints film with the births for that year for this parrish. then you can enlarge it on their reader and copy it. good luck. hope this helped a little. I received, from a relative, a xerox copy of what is supposed to be the baptismal certificate of my great-grandfather. I have it posted to http://users.ticnet.com/stevem/bapt.gif Can someone tell me what it says? Near as I can make out, it says that Imrich JANIC was born in Dubovica in 1866 and that he was the son of Andrej JANIC [something ???] and Zusana KRUPIK ??? Specific questions I have are: 1) Am I correct in reading "1866" as a date? What is the rest of date? 2) Can anyone make out the surname of the mother? 3) Is this some kind of delayed certificate? It bothers me that down at the bottom this form says "anno 19__". This does not seem to be a form that would have been used in 1866. any thoughts appreciated Steve Martonak --
Sharon, Juhasz can also be spelled Yuhasz. In North Braddock, PA, there is a family that owns a funeral home business. There are Gallo's in Rankin/Swissvale, PA. Hi, I am new to the list and finally got around to posting the surnames that I am researching, I am searching for my Slovakian roots, so hopefully someone will recognize these names: GROHOL (GROHOLSKI a possible name variation), BREZNICKY (BREZNICKI). I believe both my great grandfathers, Andrew Grohol and Andrew Breznicky came to America in the late 1890's or early 1900's and both settled in a town called Humboltd, PA, which is a township of Hazleton, PA. John Breznicky and Anna ANTOLIK came to America also, I believe if not earlier. Seeking information on them and all my decendants from Slovak region. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Joseph Grohol Jr.
I am going to a conference that has a several classes on Slovak history and how to look up records. It is in Dearborn, Michigan starting July 14. If anyone wants more info just go to: www.rootsconference.com and look up the 2002 International Roots Conference. Sharon

Hello Shirley, If you can estimate their date of immigration (if after 1902) the INS has a SOUNDEX (sounds-like) indexing system by last name, that might help you find their passenger list arrival record. This also contains place of birth. These records are stored at the National Archives and a copy of them is viewable through the Mormon's Family History Center. A handy SOUNDEX converter is found at http://www.cimorelli.com/nara/soundex2.htm You need to know port of arrival (or make a good guess). I used NY. Is there a way to review the "Roll Call" messages to this group? I didn't realize I should hit "Reply All" when I reply to these messages. Anyway, there was a message from someone referring to "Hesek" in their list of names with secondary names containing "Jurik". I would like to reply since my grandfather was known as "Urick" but several people have informed me it was probably spelled with a "J". His social security application shows his mother's maiden name as "Hassack" but he didn't fill it out. In fact, he didn't even sign it. I recognize my mother's handwriting. If he said what sounded like "Hassack" to her, it might have been "Hesek", right? I don't remember who sent it and accidently wiped out all the messages in my save folder. Hello Donna, Three comments to help you. One, do not be surprised if you don't find him on the manifest, though I hope you do. I have seen hundreds of official documents from the INS and other places that have just plain incorrect information on them regarding ship's names and specific dates of arrival. Two, transcription errors (both from immigrant's mouth to manifest and from manifest to Ellis Island) are reknown. Errors exist by the thousands. If you want to stay seated, begin to search the database using letters that could appear as the same form. For example, "T" and "F". Look at the specific manifest to understand the writing style of the particular clerk. That will help give you an idea what letters will appear similar in form. Third the NARA SOUNDEX index is a very superior index to the Ellisislandrecords.org index. It was an index of immigrants produced in the 1930's by the NARA to aid in finding surnames which may sound alike. It is an ingenious system which helped me find dozens of relatives I never would have found online. It will however, require you to get out of that easy chair and go down to the Mormon's Family History Center or a National Archive's office for microfilm viewing. If anyone is at all serious about doing comprehensive family research, SOUNDEX should be on their must-do list.
