Hi Judy, There are several films for the area of Banaka Bystrica... It appears that area of Slovakia was originally part of Hungary, the former area of Beszterczebanya...yeah, that' s a mouthful, isn't it. There are church records filmed for the Roman Catholic church from 1628 to 1909, and they contain baptism, marriage and death records in Latin and Hungarian. Film numbers: 1983117 Items 6 & 7 1982768 1982769 1982770 1982771 1982772 1982773 2002700 2002701 2002702 Items 1 & 2 There are also Evangelical Church records from 1743 - 1901. They contain baptism, marriage, and death records in Latin, Hungarian, German and Slovak. Film numbers: 2007702 Item 3 2007703 2007704 2007705 2007706 2007707 Each of the film numbers have different years filmed on them, so if you have some type of idea when your people were there, it will help you narrow down which films to start with. I know it looks formidable, but thanks to the LDS films, I have my father's lines documented back to the mid 1600s and early 1700s in Slovakia. It took a while but was well worth the time I spent! Good luck in your searches! What was the date of the documentation? Might it notate that of an orphan? One of my ancestors is listed as Marcincinova-Laczkova.....what might be the reason for the hyphenated name? It has been suggested that perhaps there were quite a few Marcincinova families and the hyphenated name allows one to differentiate. Any thoughts? Thank you, Debbie

Vivian, Could you give us an idea of what the archives in Kosice have, i.e., church, census, etc? LDS has not filmed the 1869 census for Gemer County, although has done some other counties. If I were to write the archives, could they (for a fee I realize) look up something in that census, if it is there, and you had the information they needed to do so? Thanks, Joyce

I've pasted them below - hope this is OK with the people who sent these generous replies! Thanks again Lorrie depending on where they worked, there is a heritage center in Johnstown, pa., operated by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. It is dedicated to telling the stories of immigrants who worked in the mills and mines of central Pa. Bethlehem Steel was a major employeer of immigrants since the late 1880s. you may want to check there. if that fails, try robin rummel, the archivist at the Johnstown Flood Museum in Johnstown, Pa. she may know if any records exist and where you might locate them. Lorrie: My uncle worked for Bethlehem Steel in Pottstown, PA. The toll-free number for Bethlehem Steel Benefits is 1-877-864-8151. They may be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck. Doris Lorrie, You might try the local genealogical society for both the county and the town in which Bethlehem Steel was located. Often local societies archive such records. I've also wondered the same thing about the employee records of coal mining companies in Pennsylvania (such as Adrian, etc.) which employed great numbers of emigrants from Slovakia in the early 20th century. Some localized genealogical societies even have e-mail addresses and small websites and have someone to research questions for a very modest fee. Mary > Contact SOUTH SURBURBAN GEN & HIST SOCIETY, at marileaz@aol.com. They may have records. the lady's name is Marilea Zajec. You can mention my name, Margaret Heinek, I have met her and she is real helpful. Good luck. Margaret
Well I guess I can add another bean to the pot... My first trip to the archives in Kosice was a "Bright Light" experience.... ..I was told the "alias" referred to that person's mother's maiden name. For example if there were several Juraj SZABOL then you would have a Juraj SZABOL alias GEGERLY and maybe a Juraj SZABOL alias ELIAS...same with women on children's baptismal records...mother was Katerina HARVAN at birth and married a SZABOL, but to separate here from other Katerina SZABOL then the priest would list her as Katerina HARVAN alias MARTINCEK (using her maiden name and alias her mother's maiden name-being (MARTINCEK). Then you get into the "name conversion" charts...LOL You have "Stefan" in Slovak and "Istvan" in Hungarian and "Stefanus" in Latin. Then there is "Elizabeth" vs. "Alzbeta" and "Mathew" and " Matyas" and "Katerina" and "Katalin". So depending on the priest and ruling government...you could slide from Latin, to Hungarian, to Slovak and in some entries a mixture... But I am not complaining...in some instances that helped me to establish the paternity of several people...am grateful for any written record...mistakes are made and are human error...after 300 years they still exist....just look at Social Security :-) Am planning to go back to Kosice this Sept and will make a trip to Archives for one last chance...as they (govt/church) are planning to lock the books away...they are 200 to 300 years old and receiving too much public touching... Peace, Vivian
Ruth, As you have probably figured, the records are written in Latin, Hungarian and Slovak. The "alias" I have seen in the Latin records, next to a woman's name. Unless I am wrong, the first name is the married name (i.e., Maria Gettler) then "alias" Tomazy, would be her maiden name, so yes, it would be two different names. The spelling change of the name in the marriage record -vs - the birth records is most likely a change in the clergy who is writing the records, and/or a change in the records going from Slovak to Hungarian or visa versa. Although there is a pretty big difference between Turcanek and Srsnik. Are you absolutely sure about the T and S? Different priests had different ways of making letters. Is there a possibility it could read Trsnik or Surcanek? Just a thought because I am not familiar with either name. I hate to throw this up, but I and others have found an entry with a totally wrong name. The marriage record said Srsnik, have you found her birth record to verify that spelling? I would look for her birth record and see what it said. The more I look at those 2 names, the further apart they become. I have seen one of the names I am researching spelled at least 5 different ways, but it always started and ended with the same letters. Good luck, Joyce
I have been researching Slovakian church records from the 1800's and have come across one entry listing an alias name, which is totally different from the listed name. Also, in another entry for a family's children, the mother's name is spelled one way (Srsnik) on some records and another way (Turcanek) on others, yet is apparently the same woman as the marriage record has one spelling and the birth of the first child nine months later is spelled the other. Does anybody have any information to shed light on this practice? Thanks for any help. Ruth Ann Sakala
Hello, I have done some research on my wife's roots in Vinné (I don't known the modern jurisdictions (county, province, etc.) in which it lies but it is near Michalovce) the surnames include: Konik Getlik Kocsik Ganyo - these being the most resent generations. I have others since I've gone back to circa 1800. My wife's family left right after the Soviets moved in. Her other line, Duro comes from Sachurov (N-NW of Michalovce), but I have not been able to find connections in the records available from the Family History Library. I know that I must get her mom to request her fathers birth record in order to get to the name(s) of my wife's great grand parent(s) and into the time-frame of the available church records (some day...). Q: Why can't this list automactically prefix messages with [Sl-L] or [Slovakia] or something! like most other lists? ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I have some HUMENYIKs from Velka Domasa, Zemplin, Slovakia in the 1850-1870 period. Joseph HUMENYIK married into my HORGOS family. The HUMENYIKs are not my direct line, but whatever I do have, I'll be happy to share with anyone who wants to see it. Best regards, Amy Horgas
My grandmother was born in the US, while it appears, her parents were trying to emigrate from Slovakia. The family returned to Slovakia shortly after her birth, and she and a brother returned unaccompanied when Gram was 14. I know when and how the two children arrived, but I've never been able to locate any of the earlier crossings. I also know that my great-grandfather, like so many Eastern Europeans of the day, worked at Bethleham Steel. I've written to them, but surprise, no answer! Does anyone know if any records of Bethlehem Steel employees from the early 1900's might exist and be available somewhere? Lorrie
I am researching my Slovak ancestry and looking for any connections to the following family names and possible derivations: 1) Bozosi (Bozossy) 2) Danko (Danyko) 3) Simkovich (Simkovic, Simkovics) 4) Hresko 5) Cifranic (Cifranich, Czfranics) 6) Manko 7) Yurko (Jurko) 8) Wargo (Varga) 9) Sirak 10) Stefan 11) Lovasz 12) Lopatnik Most if not all of the above came from Trebisov, or as it was formerly known, Toketerebes when part of hte Austria Hungary empire. Most settled in the coal regions of Pennsylvania - Hazleton, Beaver Meadows, Pittston, Duryea, and Coxton. Most came to the United States in the period of 1901 - 1914. Interested to hear from anyone that may have a connection. Vera, You have a long list of names there. You can start by going to the Slovak white pages at: www.teldir.com/eng/euro/sk (that will get you to the first page, after that it is in Slovak as they don't have the English version up yet.) 1. Click on the map of Slovakia and that will get you to the research page. 2. Click on "nazov alebo priezvisko" and type in the last name you want to look up 3. go to "mesto" and type in Michalovce 4. Hit the "vyhladat" button and that will bring up an a persons phone # and address if there is a listing. The church of the Ladder Day Saints has church films form Michalovce from the Roman and Greek Catholic churches. To get information on that go to: www.familysearch.org On the first page in the right column you will see a place to click for the library holdings. That will bring you to a page where you can do a place search. Type in Michalovce and that will give you the information on the films they have. They can be ordered and viewed at your local family history center at the LDS church in your area. Happy Hunting Joyce
