    1. Re: Roll call - Almassy
    2. Dr. Joe Q
    3. There are a number of Almassy (Almássy, Almáši, Almásy) families in the records of Spišský Hrušov (Körtvélyes). Spišský Hrušov is 38 km west of Prešov, 46 km northwest of Košice, 10 km east of Spišská Nová Ves, 12 km southeast of Levoča (Löcse). Surprisingly is the "nobilis" entry for the family in house #33 of Matthew Almassy (born about 1815 - died February 4, 1873) and Catherine Almassy (born about 1841 - died September 21, 1873). I have rarely seen the "nobility" designation in records. These data are on the LDS films: 1739885: 1861-1896 parts 1-2 1739903: 1713-1861 parts 6-9 Considering the distance between Levoča and Spišský Hrušov, there may be a blood relationship. The names Almáši and Almasi are still found in Spišská Nová Ves; Almáši in Košice; and Almássy and Almási in Prešov. Košická Nová Ves is indeed a "suburb" on the east northeast side of Košice, about 4 km from the center (Staré Mesto) of Košice, just on the east side of the Hornád River. I hope this helps. You're welcome. Dr. "Q" Löcse (Levoča) is Dan Almashy wrote: > I'm looking into the name Jan Bela Almassy who was born 1979 in > Locse, Hungary (now Slovakia), He came from Kosice in 1916. 3. Hi, Jean. If you've not been to the Ellis Island site, you should go there. You will find Mihaly HRICZO, age 16, arriving on Mary 25, 1895 from Hungary on the Dtuch ship Maasdam, from Rotterdam, S. Holland, Netherlands. Unfortunately when you go seeking the manifest, the wrong page is there, as well as several before it. You ought to be able to scare up a picture and biography of the ship. 2. Looking for TARABEK from Kysucke Nove Mesto, Slovakis, formerly Kiszucza-Ujhely, Tenncsen, Hungary. Have found a village-full, but mostly named John and I can't connect my US (Duquesne, Pa.) relatives back. My g-grandfather, John, (naturally) immig. in the mid-1880's. All I have to work from is the scant (and maybe inaccurate?) info on the US Census. Naturalization papers were no help. Also, HRITZO or HRICZO from Satoraljaujhely or Satoralja, Nove Mesto, Hungary. My g-grandfather, Mihaly Hriczo, immig. to Pennsylvania in 1896 with his wife, Anna KISTIK. The Hungarian census was productive, but can't find any church records (Greek Cath.) for them. Only the birth of their daughter/my grandmother. And lastly, SEBEJ from Solivar, Slovakia, formerly Saros, Kapi, Hungary. My g-grandmother,Ana Sebej, immig. with her husband, Nicholaus or Miklos WIDELY or VIDELI ABOUT 1888, settling in McKeesport, Pa. I cannot locate her parents, George SEBEJ and Zuzana ADAMKOVIC (no church records) and can find absolutely nothing about her husband Widely/Videli, other than their marriage record. If any of these names tie in with other families out there, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Also, any advice for locating or connecting to lost relatives - I've "almost" exhausted the LDS films - would be gratefully accepted. Thank you, Jean Tarabek

    3. Get all of the films for the dates and places you are researching. These are records of baptism (krstení), marriage (sobášení), deaths (zomrelí), and confirmations (birmovaní). Matrike just means records like the "matriculation fee" you pay when registering for college. I'm not sure why the other words are there - muzske (mužský means male) and zenske (ženský means female). The films have Slovak titles but the records are in Latin with Hungarian spellings of names including the towns' names. You're welcome. 2. Krsteni is birth birmovani is confirmation sobaseni is wedding zomreli is death muzske is male zenske is female the others are indexes for marriage and death. the pokrstenych i have seen but do not remember what this is an index of. one word of warning. i have ordered indexes for large cities like presov and kosice and have found that they exact ones which i needed were 'to be continued' on the next reel of film. just to be sure it does not happen to you, look up the next numerical film number and see if it may possiblly be a 'continuation' of the film you are going to be viewing. just trying to save you a possible 'groan' at the end of a film you will be viewing. :O) Noreen

    1. Need Researcher Info
    2. Terry Iwaniw
    3. Hello, List We're looking to compile a list of genealogy researchers. This project is hosted by the Ukrainian Genealogical Society and many inquiries have been sent asking if there was a list of researchers that were available to do family records research. The UGS is going to offer this list service completely free, no fee to the researchers or to those interested in locating a researcher. The only thing that the UGS is doing is bringing the 2 together. They will be responsible for negotiating fees, charges, deliverables, etc. If anyone knows someone who does family research in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, or any areas formerly in the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, could you please encourage them to list themselves by completing the form at http://www.iwaniwassocs.com/ugs/researchers/researcher_appl.html Also, if you know of any other genealogy mail lists that pertain to Eastern European genealogy research, could you please forward this request to the memebrs? Thanks, Terry http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukrgs/

    3. Judie, My family is from Brezno, about a 20 minute drive from Banska Bystrica. Go to the family search page and look at the catalog for the LDS library. Put in your town names, without a country. When I do this, I get Brezno, Slovakia and Brezno, Hungary. It's the same place - just different time frames. For my town there are Catholic, Evangelical (Lutheran) and Jewish records. Do you know what religious affiliation your family might have had? I was fortunate to have much information to get me started, including the birth dates of both great-grandparents and knowledge that they were Lutheran. The Lutheran records go back to 1787, then I had to go into the Catholic records - interestingly, within the Catholic records I found people noted to be Lutheran - if you - or anyone else - has questions about this, I can provide some information. Good luck! Lorrie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith A. Mason" <judith.mason@ameritech.net> To: <SLOVAKIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2002 1:10 PM Subject: Help! 2. Judie, if you visit an LDS Family History Center in your area, there is always someone there to guide you in the right direction. If they don't have the items on hand, they will order them for you. I have always found them to be most helpful! Happy Hunting, Marylou Chapman List Administrator
