I have just started researching ancestors that were Slovak. Now I would most enjoy some help either here or via websites. QUESTIONS: If it list place born in the Census as Czech and then list them as Slovak does this mean they were born in Czech? Is Slovak a culture or country or a place? The name I am researching is MAIJTON/ MAJTAN/ MAJTON/ translate to Mayton/Maton/Matton I am told it was prononuced Mi-TON. but any help is appreciated. I am new to immigrant ancestors. IF in the census it states year of immigration and the year is say 1910, alien DOES this mean this is when the arrived in the USA? How would I go about finding where they came in at? Michael Hudaschko/Hudasko left Kalinisti with a John, either a brother or a cousin & went to Somas,Saros, Hungary, now Drienov. I was told he and a brother Andrew were left orphans at age 6 & 4 in 1850. Are their any church or census records of Kaliniste? Was the name changed? Michael married Elizabeth Dombromfsky/Dobronsky Feb. 5 1868 of Somos and John married Mary Merkowsky of Somos. Elizabeth is related to Kmetz/Kmecz, but I don't know how, possibley her grandmother.Michael B 1844 & Elizabeth B1850 are my great grandparents, they had 8 children and imigrated to Streator. Illinois. I believe they came seperately to USA. I have the films of Somas and a lot of Hudachko's appear back a few generations. I would like to find Michael's parents and did they originally come from Somas. Can anyone help me?

Ražnany village (former Nersany) lies in a beautiful scene of the Sarisska fold. It is 2km far from the county town of Sabinov. The village's neighbours are Uzovske Salagovo on the north, Jarovnice on the west Ostrovany on the south. Centre of the village is at 350m altitude, the highest place is the hill Bikos with the altitude of 513m. The first written reference about the settlement dates from the year 1248, when it is mentioned to be a part of the Saris castle estate. Naršany arose probably out of two settlements Nyars and Ardo (1427 Nyars and Ardo - two settlements, 1428 Ardo-Nyars, 1466 Nyarsardo, 1773 Narssany, 1920 Naršany, 1948 Ražnany). Up to the 15th century the settlement belonged to the Semsenys, latter to the Ujfalusys and Takyovcis. I have a Baptismal certificate from a Greek Catholic Church (St. Nicolas of Myra in Yonkers NY May 7, 1904). It gives the names of the towns in Galicia as ? Mikoos for the father and ? Suskows for the mother. Is there any resource where I could look up the names of the towns and try to match these in case I do not have the correct spelling as the writing is difficult to read. Hello Marsha, You'll be glad you made this post. Kiraly Hotar Lehola is most likely the old Hungarian name Kiralylehota which is the the present-day Kralova Lehota (in the former Hungary county of Liptov). It was obviously spelled phonetically by the scribe. It is consistent with the other variation of "Kiraly Lehola" In all likelyhood all records refer to the same village. Use http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp to search for records the Mormons may have filmed. A quick check shows the 1784-1898 evangelical church records have been filmed. I would high-tail it down to your local LDS branch and order the films for viewing! This is your lucky break! You can search for people with similar surnames in the region with the online Slovak Republic phone book (beware, only 20% of all have phones) Use http://www.centroconsult.sk/Support/phone.html Strategy should be to search the entire region, starting from the ancestral and working out. Look for larger, industrialized cities. Many people have moved. http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm is a great map resource. It will take you to a mapquest map. Liptovsky Hrako is a small town where you might find more information. Your "vanc" surname looks like it was somewhat Americanized. I see a lot of 'VANCO' listed (VANCOVA is the feminine form). These "might" be related. Gather more info from the family history center, then consider sending a "blind letter." I can send info on how to write a letter when you are ready. All of this at no cost to you! :) Now, for some general guidance: Very few folks make much progress by singularly searching for a surname. Name variations due to errors and overt changes are renown. Your key to success will be to identify the ancestral village. Most archival records are organized that way. The most reliable places to find the ancestral village is in one of the following documents, if they emigrated to US. a) Church (U.S.) records of immigrant's marriage or offspring's birth. (Actually immigrants as a group were more trusting of their clergy than bureaucrats and consequentially more truthful!) b) Social Security Application (if legally employed in US 1936 or later). c) INS File (Alien reports, 1st or 2nd papers, naturalization documents) d) INS Alien Registration Form (if a resident alien in the US in the year 1940 only) e) US Census from 1900, 1910 or 1920 f) US Port of Entry records, if you can identify date of arrival. Held by the National Archives (and filmed by Mormons). There is an index for records, organized by last name (SOUNDEX) referenced to date of arrival (records 1902 and later). www.ellisislandrecords.org contains a database and images of manifests from 1892 to 1924 from the Port of NY. 80% of all U.S. immigrants between 1892 and 1924 passed thru here. SOUNDEX is particularly useful in locating surnames that sound-alike. g) If all the above fails, consider looking at a present-day phone book. For Slovakia, see http://www.centroconsult.sk/Support/phone.html#codes Although descendants may have moved from the ancestral village, it is likely you'll still find some of them nearby. The LEAST reliable places to find the ancestral village are: a) U.S. Death Certificate - the information is only as good as the informant, who is many times uninformed or in error. b) Obituaries - For the same reason as (a). I haven't seen the actual newspapers, but the Immigration History Research Center in Minneapolis, MN has the actual records from some of the Jednota's. My notes show that they have items from the First Catholic Slovak Union, 1890-1958; and from the National Slovak Society 1895-1976. I also show that they have the Amerikansko Slovenske Noviny from 1893-1904; the Jednota Weekly from Middletown, PA from 1893-1940 and the Slovak V Amerike also a weekly out of Middletown from 1894-1938. You would have to check with them about their research policy. I also have a vague note that the University of Illinois has some of the Slovak newspapers. The Jednota also has a museum and archives in Middletown, PA which probably has copies of their publications. The last time I was there, in the 1990s, they were just getting organized. I am still trying, with no luck so far, to find anything about my grandfather. He came to America around 1906. We spelled his name Urick but so far I've found it Uhrick, Uric, Uhuch on census records, etc. I think he was from Erdevik or near there. Somewhere across the Danube from Palanka, Hungary. Another family that might be related was Petoskey or Peckovsky or something like that. On an earlier message to this site, someone replied the ending "sky" can mean they were from that city. Searching Ellis Island, I found the wife of this Peckovsky from Erdevik. What I didn't notice at the time on the same page was Marton Suzecky from Szuszek going to the same address and person as his brother in law. Following the above information, Marton's surname could mean he was from Susek. There is such a city and it is near Erdevik!!!. I can't help but think there is a connection. Any suggestions about information on families from Susek? I found the Peckovsky's in the 1910 census but not Marton. If "Suzecky" means he was from "Szuszek" or Susek, wouldn't he have a different Surname? Certainly not everyone in the town would use the same "Suzecky"? I have not been able to find my father-in-law, even on this great site, but continued trying different ways. On Tuesday evening I found him. His surname was spelled phonetically, and his first name, Michael, was spelled Mihaly. Everything else was exactly as expected.
