Bill I was wondering if you could tell me what county Nandraz is in. Thanks, John Netro Searching Surnames: Nyitrai(y), Bartko, Horkay, Balas
Cacov is really Cacov. Please do not overlook the diacritical marks. Cacov is located in Zupa Nitrianska; okres Senica, kraj Bratislava until 1960 then in okres Senica, kraj Zapadoslovensky. Kunov is located in the same Zupa Nitrianska; okres Senica, kraj Bratislava until 1960 then in okres Senica, kraj Zapadoslovensky. I don't understand what you want to "distinguish the different regions." Kunov has always had a population that fluctuated between 432 and 600 during the years 1869 and 1970. Cacov had a population fluctuating between 986 and 1,265 during the same period. I would consider both locations as small towns. Frank R. No such software that I could find. I've talked to several companies that make similar software for other languages and their response was; "The use of the language is not wide enough to make the project cost effective." Read that last part as "not enough profit." Most of the translation software on the market is little more than a word-for-word substitution which you can do with a dictionary. Even then the text needs to be simple declarative sentences. The real problem is the grammar and the way that most people write. If the English grammar is not correct the other language translation cannot expect to be correct either. I have used a rather high priced ($500 per copy) translation software for English to German and even that is not good enough for a native German language speaker. They found substantial shortcomings in the product. I could even see the German errors after two years of College German and 6 years living in Germany. Going the other way from German to English left much to be desired for the native English language speaker. I think that suitable language translation software is still several years away. The only true solution is to learn the other language the best that you can. Sorry, there is no easy answer. Frank R. This http://www.otpalca.sk/Aplik/Ang/anglictina.htm is not bad, it's slow. It's a dictionary. Unfortunately, they have been "down" for a while. Keep checking it for when it comes back up. That's what I've been doing. At the moment I have been using a fellow in Slovakia over the net that translates at $5 a common letter, nothing technical, ordinary page. You email the English, he emails back the Slovak or sends it on to the intended party in Slovakia, and they can do likewise in reverse. You pay on the honor system to his agent in the US. His address available off site. Have you tried local Slovak churches and organizations for translators? If you do find a translating program please post it to this site. Best wishes, ~Juraj

I agree with Bill Tarkulich that you need to do a lot of checking on the the ellisisland data, and also agree it's a great place to start. The site had a "Hehe Karas" traveling with my grandfather's first wife in 1892. However, the scanned passenger list on the site definitely said "Hone." I checked the microfilmed passenger list at the National Archives to make sure the scanned list was a good scan. The name was definitely "Hone." She came from the Rusyn village of Vylagy (now Svetlice) and this isn't a Rusyn name or nickname I've heard of. I found her birth record in the microfilmed church records. Her name was actually Anna Karas. My theory is that she had a cold or allergy and when she pronounced Anna, which should have been AH-nuh, it sounded like HAH-nuh to the ship official. My husband, who speaks German, says these sounds would probably have been spelled Hone with two dots over the "o" although the dots weren't on the passenger list. Robin in Maryland
Bill, Thanks very much. As always - much good information. My GF was born in 1891, arrived US in 1904. Declaration of Intent and naturalization papers filled out by him list place of birth as Almas. So - circa 1891-1904, it was known to him as Almas. Since he listed last place of residence as Luka (or Lucka), I will continue on hunch that any Almas with a nearby Luka will offer best bet. Bill -- I think the list of towns is more extensive now. I sent this to the list about a year ago in response to someone who was asking about western Slovakia: Go to the Family History Library Catalog Search Page at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Do a Place Search for Nyitra (spelled that way). You'll see the 1869 census listed there under Nyitra, Hungary. Click on: Népszámlálás, 1869 : Nyitra (megye) to see this description: "Individual returns from the 1869 census of Hungary, for the county Nyitra. Includes the areas now in the Slovakian okres of Bojnice, Dolné Obdokovce, Dolná Nitra, Horná Nitra, and Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Skalica." then click on: View Film Notes to see the listing of the 624 films. They're listed by district and alphabetized IN HUNGARIAN with the Slovak translation. Towns discussed on S-W are near the end of the list. For example, in Okres Nove Mesto nad Vahom, which starts around Film 401 on the list, are Verbove, Brezova, Krajne, Myjava, and Nova Lehota. In Okres Skalica, which starts around 501, are Holic, Hlbove, Senica, Sobotiste, and Vrbovce. (sorry about the mime format) I wrote this message in 2001. There may have been additions since then. It has foreign characters included, so you may need to adjust your viewing computer. BT I have taken some time to copy the village index of the 1869 Magyar (Hungarian) Census found from the Family History Center web site. I've attached a formatted MS Word version, and also a plain text version below, for the MS-Word impaired. After staring at it for some time, it occurred to me that the Mormons have already done an admirable job of cross-referencing the old Magyar names with the contemporary Slovak names. This should be pretty useful to those who seek to find one name or another. Bear in mind that THIS LIST IS NOT ALL VILLAGES IN SLOVAKIA, ONLY THOSE FILMED(AND PUBLISHED) THUS FAR BY THE FHC. Slovak place name, followed by Magyar (Hungarian) in parenthesis. It's not complete, but a pretty good start. There may have been additions since then. It has foreign characters included, so you may need to adjust your viewing computer. BT I have taken some time to copy the village index of the 1869 Magyar (Hungarian) Census found from the Family History Center web site. I've attached a formatted MS Word version, and also a plain text version below, for the MS-Word impaired.=20 After staring at it for some time, it occurred to me that the Mormons have already done an admirable job of cross-referencing the old Magyar names with the contemporary Slovak names. This should be pretty useful to those who seek to find one name or another.=20 Bear in mind that THIS LIST IS NOT ALL VILLAGES IN SLOVAKIA, ONLY THOSE FILMED(AND PUBLISHED) THUS FAR BY THE FHC.=20 Slovak place name, followed by Magyar (Hungarian) in parenthesis. It's not complete, but a pretty good start.=20 Enjoy,=20 Bill Tarkulich=20 Title: N=E9psz=E1ml=E1l=E1s, 1869=20 Authors: Magyar Statisztikai Hivatal (Main Author)=20 Note Location Film=20 Abara John, My many thanks to you for taking the time to answer my question. I have printed that list and will take it with me to the LDS and will place my order for the film. I am now very hopeful that I will have success in my search for my husband's grandfather. Thank you John, I've made a copy of the page of film numbers etc. and will take it with me on my trip to the LDS Family History Center. Placing the order will be the easier part for me....Finding the time to go through the reels will be a bit more difficult. Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated. The LDS has filmed all census for Slovakia, but the cataloging process is slow. They are progressing from East to West across the country. They are working on the middle region now. Remember, it's up to each present-day country to authorize their release to the LDS. Case in point, neither the Czech republic nor Ukraine will allow it, hence these census will not show up at the LDS in our lifetimes. I believe, but not certain that former SZREM is in either Slovenia or Croatia. See http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/vmlista.htm for the old county maps. SZEREM is at the bottom of the map in green color. Beware, all the names are in Magyar (Hungarian). Here http://parizs.tripod.com/trianon/trianonterkep.html is a map about how Hungary was broken apart at the end of WW1, via the Treaty of Trianon. Remember, after 1989, Yugoslavia was futher split up into new countries. See, you shouldn't have slept through high school history!!! :) Bill Tarkulich -----Original Message----- From: Marlene Norton [mailto:marlene_norton@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 9:58 AM To: bill@iabsi.com; SLOVAKIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Magyar (Hungarian) Census / Slovakia I may not always be learning more about my familiy but I am certainly learning. For those interested in the 1869 Hungarian (Magyar) Census, as it applies to Slovakia: Magyar (Hungarian) Census Several Magyar (Hungarian) Censuses were conducted by the Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary Empire. The most complete census was performed in 1869. Each village is enumerated, organized by house number. Each house is described by the number of rooms, doors, windows, floors, barns and other outbuildings. Listed are each occupant's name, birth date, birth place, occupation, religion, ethnicity, literacy, and other items. Also included is a detailed inventory of livestock, probably their most valued asset. The census was written in Hungarian. It is quite simple for a reader fluent in any language to read these films, as they are tabular: name, birth date, religion, etc. A census overview and reading tips can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7347/Centips2.html The tricky part is that most village names had Magyar (Hungarian) names, quite a bit different from the Slovak place names in use today. Lucky for us, the Mormon's Family History Center (FHC) has filmed the entire 1869 census (I can only speak for present-day Slovakia). Luckier still, the Mormon's have indexed the census by present-day place name, with a parenthetical reference to the old Hungarian place name. Here's how to find the census at the FHC. Note that only the VILLAGE NAME INDEX will be found online. You will need to visit the FHC to request and view the films containing the census. Go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Search under "Hungary" (it covers Slovakia, formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). There are several, but the 1869 is the only complete census. Title: Népszámlálás, 1869 Authors: Magyar Statisztikai Hivatal (Main Author) Notes: Az eredeti iratok mikrofilmrevétele Budapesten a Magyar Országos Levéltárban történt. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- 1869 census of Zemplén County, Hungary, which is divided now between Slovakia and Hungary. Places are listed here alphabetically according to the original Hungarian place name. Modern Slovak names (or sometimes modern Hungarian names) are in the parenthesis. For more information and a preview of the census forms, see http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/CensusMain.htm Bill Tarkulich

Films are being released from east to west. Right now, they're finishing up the Presov region, Nitra will be last. If its not at the LDS FHC, you'll need to write to the regional archives. If as you say, it's near Levoca, the regional archives is right there. Here are the details on how to write http://feefhs.org/frl/czs/dg-arch.html Re On another issue - have had absolutely no luck identifying > arrival of my GM, Anna Pastircak to the U.S. It's probably badly, badly mangled. Try to discover other names or relatives from the same village and follow them along, including who they went to stay with, then search further for those names. Search the pages directly. Re: Born 1895, plus 14 equals 1909 vice 1905. A mystery continues. Don't lose sleep over this one, dates are inevitably wrong, either in writing or in memory. Plus or minus five years doesn't surprise me. Plus or minus 10 years might, unless one was being purposefully deceptive. Yes, the missing manifests stuff is great. It looks like Steve Morse site is down again unfortunately. AFHIC appears to be harrassing him again. Please write a letter of protest to ellisisland.org. Persist on the villages.
