    1. Re: Name Pimsner
    2. Dear Jeannette, In searching the Ellis Island there appeared a family Jacob, Fran and Andrea from Meczenej and Mecznenef. Most of the folks with that surname came from Slovakia and what was considered Hungary at that time. Have you considered that they may be Slovak rather than German? This is a website that may point you in the right direction if you find that they are absolutely from Germany and not from any other country. www.calle.com Pull that URL up and then go to "World" and then to "Germany" and then to cities beginning with "Me" Hope that this may help you. 3. I am researching a family from Metzenseifen... PIMSNER. I have been told this family appears in no cemetery in the region. I managed to find when my great great grandparents came to the US... I would like to see if anyone is familiar with this surname. It could also be spelled PIMZNER... Does anyone have an idea where they came from in Germany? 2. Donna Przecha
    3. We have been told that a priest by the name of Colomon Tomchany was from the same village as the Buchko ancestors we are researching. I am contacting the diocese to see if there is any information on this man in Trenton, NJ. I have not found anything in the Ellis Island lists, IGI or other resources. Colomon seems to be an unusual name and I wonder if this was a translation. Donna Przecha

    2. The 2001 movie Behind Enemy Lines with Gene Hackman was filmed in the Slovak Republic (we just got it at Blockbuster). I thought I recognized the Tatras and Rusyn names in the credits. Parts were filmed in two national reserves, but I couldn't read their names in the credits. Also thanks for the responses to my inquiry on my husband's grandfather's naturalization papers showing he came from Zibser Comitat in Hungary. Within 24 hours I had responses which said it was Zipser (German name Zips) which became Szepes and is now Spiss in Slovakia. We may never be able to figure out the village, but getting the info so quickly was great. Robin in Maryland

    1. PLEASE Stay on Topic!!!
    2. Well, I guess it's time for another warning message from the List Administrator: First, PLEASE folks, limit the subject of your messages to genealogical (and related) items on SLOVAKIA or SLOVAKIANS. Rootsweb offers this free service so that we can exchange information on one topic only -- SLOVAKIA. Please don't abuse the privelege. Second, to make matters worse, the recent virus warning forwarded to the list was indeed a hoax. So, in addition to not forwarding off-topic information to the SLOVAKIA list, please do your friends a favor and check out such warnings before you forward the emails. In addition to the McAfee and Norton links provided by Melissa, you can go to http://www.snopes.com, where you will find a search engine. Just enter some key words from the "warning" you have received, and you will find abundant information -- whether it is a hoax or not. Thanks, and happy ancestor-hunting, Marylou Chapman List Administrator

    3. Oh list mgr? Where art thou? Help! It's your daily virus hoax. DON'T follow the instructions in this HOAX. It is a HOAX, and you will break your IE if you follow these instructions. McAffee backs me up here: http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99436 And Norton too: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file .hoax.html If you're going to invoke their names in a virus warning, at least check their sites first. -----Original Message----- From: WHew536674@cs.com [mailto:WHew536674@cs.com] Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 7:49 PM To: SLOVAKIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Detected virus warning To everyone in my mailbox, I received an E-mail just now notifying me of a virus that was sent out through E-mail. 2. We just got my husband's great-grandfather's naturalization papers which say he was born January 31, 1846 in Zibser Comitat in Hungary. Does anyone know where this was, where it is now, and whether the LDS has microfilmed the church records from there. His name was spelled Ludwig TURSAK on the naturalization records. May have been Torszak. He later spelled it Thursack in Buffalo, NY. Robin in Maryland

    3. Hi Listers, I'm looking for Ratzischdorf - Rača evangelical church records. My 6th gr-grandfather Johann Martin MALETH (MALET , MALLET) was born there about 1739. He was son of Kaspar MALETH and Elisabeth FUHRMANN. (Johann Martin MALETH moved to Mezobereny, Bekes County, Hungary in 1753 from Toffi, Baranya County, Hungary). Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Istvan Maleth

    1. Ratzischdorf-Raea
    2. Hello Istvan, Istvan was my grandfather's name. He changed it to Stephen after many years in this country. In the Latter Day Saints website, Mezobereny is listed as having had their records copied. you may want to start there, if you have not already done so. This is the address: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?displ ay=localityhitlist&columns=*%2C180%2C0&PLACE=mezobereny&PARTOF=& prePLACE=mezobereny&prePARTOF= Toffi is not listed on www.calle.com in the world index and country of Hungary. however, there is a Tofej. Go to: www.calle.com then hit World Index and go to Hungary. Put in the first two letters and you will find all the possible connections. You may want to put some of your questions into the www.google.com website Ratzischdorf, as that spelling, does not seem to be anywhere i know to search. Noreen

Dear Donna, On the Polish Border Surnames list, someone posted a website which lists highlander and other regional costumes. try: http://www.perfekt.krakow.pl/stroje_en.php I noticed that the region from which one of my grandfathers came has regional dress similar to that which you described on the pictures of your sister-in-law's grandparents. White full sleeves and black vests. My grandfather's region would be the one under Nowy Sacz . Hope that this may help you. Noreen
