Hi Kat, I'd like to know more about your SLIVKA connection. I know we're in approximately the right area, but where is Zbudska Bela exactly? Here's what I know about my SLIVKA ancestors: My great grandmother Maria SLIVKA in Slovakia married Jan Ohriska and had three children that I know of: Jan Ohriska (1896-1969), Michal Misho Ohriska and Maria Ohriskova (1902-1983). I know nothing about Maria SLIVKA's parents or siblings. Their daughter Maria was my maternal grandmother. Son Jans first wife was Anna KOSTREJ. Jan and Anna lived in the village of Tasula, a few kilometers west of Jenkovce (and the present-day Ukranian border). Anna died giving birth to their son, Jan. According to the US Social Security Death Index on the Internet: John Ohriska was born c. Aug 21, 1896, died c. Nov, 1969. Residence: Elizabeth, Union, NJ 07202 SSN: 131-03-7033, issued in New York before 1951. Jan remarried to Maria Mary Duda (1910-2002). They lived in Jenkovce. Jan immigrated to the USA c. 1937, when daughter Margita was 3 months old. He stayed until his wife and children arrived from Europe, returning to the old country only once to build a house and barn for the family. Maria immigrated to the USA with children Margaret and Joseph c. April, 1949. They traveled to the US on the historic R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, the worlds largest ocean liner at the time. Michal Misho Ohriska married Anna Cibere from Jenkovce. The couple had a son who lived in Michalovce. Misho committed suicide in his 30s. Maria Ohriskova, born in Jenkovce, married my grandfather Juraj George Oresky (1901-1981) from the nearby village of Bezovce. George immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1926, followed by Mary and their firstborn son George in 1929. They had two more children in Toronto: Mary (my mother) and John. I have a bit more information if you're interested. I'm researching PINKO, DUNDA, CSIPAK, KUNDRATH, and KOCZO from what was then Vylagy (Vilagy), Hungary, now Svetlice, Slovakia. The LDS microfilmed church records were wonderful. I went back several generations. Also researching TORSZOK (spelled Tursak, Thursack in US) from what was then Szepes (Zipster), Hungary, now Spiss, Slovakia. Don't know the village in Spiss or how I could narrow it down. "Zipster Comitat" was on naturalization records and I can't find the ship records. I believe Ludwig Torszok was German but may have been Magyar. Any ideas? Robin in Maryland

I am re-sending this as the copy that came to me was garbled. Kathy Hello Fellow Listers, I am searching for records of my: - Paternal Grandparents: Andrew Tomko and Mary Berta from Lemesany, Saris County, Slovakia. (Lemes in Hungarian.) He immigrated in 1903 when my grandmother was 4 mos. pregnant with my father & worked for money to bring his family over. She immigrated in May of 1906 on the Carpathia with children: Veronica (7), Mary (5), and Andrew (3) [my dad born 1903]. Also, brought 15 year old neighbor girl, Mary Dancak, with her. Settled 1906 in Duquesne, PA, moved in 1909 to Lemont Furnace, Fayette County, PA. Cannot find records at Ellis Island (where the Carpathia docked). Years ago my father tried to find records & was told the Carpathia ship's logs were destroyed in a fire. He always knew he was listed as a "babe in arms" for the passage. - Maternal Grandparents: John Vasko & Mary Soltis probably from Lemesany too or a nearby village. They settled in Duquesne, PA. Some of their children probably died before they immigrated (Gabriel). Their children: Andrew, Jake, Steve, May, and Anna [my mother born 1907] & two Joseph's (one died at 2 & the other at 1 month). All four grandparents were long dead when I was born. I would like to find records of their passage to this country; ages at the time, etc. Also, I have no contact with anyone in Slovakia & would like to find cousins someday. Thank you, Kathleen Tomko kamtomko@netzero.net Searching -- Tomko; Berta; Vasko (Wasko, Washko); Soltis (Soltys, Sholtez)
