I thought I would pass along a transcribtion of old Sloan related letter in order for it to be archived at the Rootsweb. Frank Mitchell Visit "The Sloan Connection" at: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html ******************************* Letter written by William Sloan Campbell July 1880 My mother had three brothers and two sisters: Archibald, Alexander and Robert, Nancy and Sarah. Nancy married Joel Campbell, my father's brother; Sarah was never married. They all died in East Tennessee. I was born in Blount Co., East Tennessee. My father moved to Monroe Co. when I was about eight on nine years old. There I remained until 1841 when I removed to Iowa Territory, having married Miss Sonna Taylor Hendrix in the fall of 1839. I attended school when a boy at Big Creek Baptist Church; went to school after I was seventeen at Bolivar Academy at Madisonville, Tenn., first Rev. Eaglton and then Rev. Colwell, both Presbyterians. I afterwards studied Latin and Philosophy for some time privately under Hilany Patrick, also a Presbyterian minister, and after the death of my first wife, I attended school two years at Cherry Grove Seminary, Knox Co. Ill. being there from the spring of 1844 till spring of 1846. My mother died in 1848 in Tennessee. My father came to this state (Illinois) with my two brothers, Alexander and James and two sisters, Margaret Ann McTeer and Nancy Caroline in January 1852 and went with James to Texas in 1859 and died near Sherman during the "Civil War". I had three sisters Elizabeth Tomson and Margaret Ann McTeer Pearson. They are both dead and Nancy Caroline Clark, now in NE Iowa (Now in 1894 in Kalespell, Montana) and by brothers are both in Iown (in 1904 Alexander is in Blain, Oklahoma) James died at Storm Lake, Iowa in May 1889. My father's and Mother's peoples were all Presbyterians and members of the Bakers Creek Church. James Campbell had one sister married to William Bonng. They had 4 sons, 11 daughters. They lived in North Carolina. My great grandfather Campbell was of Scotch-Irish descent. Came to America in an early day and settled in Mickleinburg County (now Caberris Co.) North Carolina. He had two sons, Thomas and James. Thomas was never married. James, my grandfather, married Elizabeth Bolch. Her father died when she was an infant. Her mother afterwards married _____ Miller by whom she had at least two sons, Samuel and Colinas, and two daughters, Esther, who married Joseph Rogers and _____, who married Alexander Sloan. James and Elizabeth Campbell had eight sons and five daughters: Thomas married first Francis McHenry James died in infancy (drowned) William married Margaret Sloan Edwin, who died in Tennessee or Kentucky Joel died in Tennessee. He married Nancy Sloan Silas married Matilda Todd Polly married Joseph Morrison Matilda married John T. Morrison } brothers Elizabeth married Dennis Hawkins, C.P. minister Sidney married Esther Hanah ( or Hana) Anna married Donny Malone Martha who was killed by a fall from a horse Samuel married _____ William, my father, married Margaret Sloan, daughter of William Sloan, whose wife was Margaret McTeer. He lived and died on Six Mile Creek, Blount Co., Tennessee. Two of his sisters married my grandmother Campbell's halfbrothers, Samuel and Colinas Miller; and Alexander Sloan, my grandfather's brother married my grandmother Campbell's half sister. Alexander Sloan and Samuel Miller lived some time in Kentucky near to Finis Ewing and went with him to Missouri, or moved neat the same time. Colinas Miller and Joseph Rogers lived in East Tennessee.
