I copied the following info out of a book at a local library. I am not sure of the title of the book. I am posting this info in hopes of someone recognizing this line and assisting me with info on the Richard Lewis, son of Andrew F. Lewis, who married Unknown Lawrence. My Great-grandfather Richard Lewis was born circa 1843 in Unknown Location. He died 12/1931 in GA. I am wondering if the two are one. Thanks, Todd Dorsey Maysville GA Postscript: I make no claims to the validity of the following information. HISTORY OF PENDLETON DISTRICT, S.C. LEWIS FAMILY. The Lewis family is of Welch decent. Four brothers of this family immigrated from Wales. Two of them, General Robert and John Lewis, settled in Virginia. General Robert had a son John, Sr. John Sr., had a son John, Jr., who married Frances Fielding. Their son married Bettie Washington, a sister of Gen. George Washington. John, the emigrant from Wales, born 1640, had a number of children, one of whom, David Lewis, is the ancestor of the Lewis descendants in South Carolina and particularly in Pendleton. David Lewis married Miss Terrell and raised eight children, among them John Lewis who married Sarah Taliaferro of Virginia. Just before the Revolution he, John, and his family removed from Virginia and settled in Rutherford County, North Carolina. John and Sarah Taliaferro Lewis raised nine children. John, their son, married Ann Berry Earle, a sister of Gen. John Baylis Earle and Washington Earle (as to this family see the Earle Family). Their children were: I. John Taliaferro Lewis married Eleanor Earle, daughter of Gen. John B. Earle. II. Madison Earle Lewis married Mary Griffin. III. Jesse Payne Lewis married Susan M. Taylor. IV. Baylis Washington Lewis married Frances Gaines. I. John Talliaferro Lewis at the age of twenty-one was appointed Clerk of the Superior Court of Pendleton for life. He married as above stated, Eleanor Earle, and had a number of children, one Rev. Henry T. Lewis practiced law at Pendleton for a while, then became a preacher and removed to Mississippi. He was the author of that celebrated sermon, The Harp of a Thousand Strings. Also Samuel W. Lewis who married Annie McCurry and Hannah Elizabeth Lewis. These two last named I remember very well. II. Madison Earle Lewis and wife, Mary Griffin. III. Jesse Payne and Susan M. Taylor Lewis, his wife (daughter of Joseph Taylor, a son of Maj. Samuel Taylor. As to Susan M. Lewis, see Taylor Family) had the following children: 1. Nancy Lewis-died unmarried. 2. Robert 0. Lewis-died in Confederate Army. 3. John Joseph Lewis married Carrie C. Dickinson. 4. Jesse A. Lewis-died unmarried. 5. Ellen M. Lewis married B. Frank Sloan (See B.F. Sloan Family). 6. Earle S. Lewis-killed in Confederate War unmarried. 3. John Joseph Lewis and wife, Carrie C. (Dickinson) Lewis had two children: A. Sue Ellen Lewis married J. Lee Carpenter. B. Nina D. Lewis married William S. Hunter. A. Sue Ellen Lewis married J. Lee Carpenter and they have three children: a. Ellen S. Carpenter. b. John Lewis Carpenter. C. Nina Hunter Carpenter. B. Nina D. Lewis married William S. Hunter and they have two children: a. Carrie Hunter. b. ??? 3. John Joseph Lewis married second time Maggie Wilkinson and they have the following children: A. Robert Earle Lewis. B. Jennie Hall Lewis. C. John Joseph Lewis. Col. Richard Lewis, another son of John and Sarah Taliaferro Lewis, was Clerk of the Court of Rutherford for revising the North Carolina Convention. He married Sarah Miller, daughter of Gen. James Miller of North Carolina, who was an officer in the Revolution and commanded at Augusta, Ga. He and his wife immigrated to South Carolina and settled on Seneca River near Pendleton, and he and his wife are both buried at the Old Stone Church. They had nine children: I. Mary M. Lewis married Hon. John McDowell of North Carolina. II. James Overton Lewis married Mary Lorton. III. Ann Elvira Lewis married Joseph Van Shanklin (See Shanklin Family). IV. Sarah Ann Lewis married Edwin Reese (See Reese Family). V. Andrew F .Lewis married Susan Sloan. II. James Overton and wife, Mary (Lorton) Lewis, had the following children: 1. Sarah Lewis married Dr. William B. Cherry of Pendleton. 2. Mary Lewis married Dr. Beverly A. Henry of Georgia. 3. Dr. Thomas L. Lewis married Eliza Maxwell, daughter of Capt. John Maxwell. 4. Capt. Richard L. Lewis married Sue Gaines. 5. Frances Lewis married E. A. Tate of Georgia. 6. John E. Lewis married Florence Boatwright of Columbia. 7. R. Fielding Lewis married ??? 8. Lucy Lewis married John Lebby of Charleston. 9. James Clarkson Lewis. 10. James Overton Lewis married Martha Sharpe, granddaughter of R. Y. Hayne. 1. Dr. William B. Cherry and Sarah Lewis Cherry, his wife, had the following children: A. Mary Lorton Cherry-died unmarried. B. Samuel Cherry married ??? C. Fannie Lewis Cherry married Warren R. Davis. 3. Dr. Thomas L. and Eliza (Maxwell) Lewis, his wife, have the following children: A. Elizabeth Earle Lewis--unmarried. B. Mary T. Lewis unmarried. C. Mattie D. Lewis-unmarried. D. Julia K. Lewis married Overton Henry. E. Emily W. Lewis-unmarried. F. James Lewis married Miss Birnie. G. Thomas Lewis. H. Edward Lewis married Miss Pope. I. Ben Lewis. 4. Capt. Richard and Sue (Gaines) Lewis have no issue. Capt. Richard Lewis volunteered in the Confederate War and rose to captain. V. Andrew F. Lewis (son of Col. Richard Lewis-and Susan (Sloan) Lewis had ten children 1. Richard Lewis married Unknown Lawrence. 2. David Lewis died in Confederate War. 3. John E. Lewis married Anna Smith. 4. Sue A. Lewis unmarried. .5. William Lewis-killed himself accidentally. 6~. Sallie M. Lewis--unmarried. 7. James P. Lewis married Anna Porcher. 8. Andrew F Lewis, Jr., died unmarried. 9. Emma E. Lewis died unmarried. 10. Barnard Bee Lewis-unmarried. 11. Thomas Lewis married.
