Tn. but I was thinking of the group in Sumner Co. TN. The Sumner Co. Tn. group is the John Sloan/Gardner family from Mecklenburg Co. NC. This family mainly stayed in Sumner & later Macon Co. although I think son Hezekiah may have wandered over into Smith Co. in 1830. John Sloan was a Rev. War Vet and so was his father James (w/Jean) Sloan of Mecklenburg Co. Speaking of this family, I ran across another interesting loose end today. Three of James Sloan kids married three of John Gardner kids. Today I ran across a note that said that John Gardner's wife was Elizabeth Sloan (b. abt 1740-50). I'm not sure I have a copy of the source of this on-hand. The source was supposed to be from will of John Gardner's mother, Mary Ann Gardner in Mecklenburg. This was some of Louella Sloan Young's research. Can anyone confirm this? Who is this Elizabeth Sloan? Back to Sumner Co. I'm not sure I've ever seen the proof on John & Mary Ann (Gardner) Sloan's children. I show 7 known children, but based on the early census records there may be some missing. NOW ELLIE, DON'T GET YOU HOPES UP!! But an interesting coincidence, I show a missing son the same age group as your Thomas Shields Sloan. Also the name Wilson pops up associated with John Sloan's family, See my notes below: ************ John's children: 01 James G. ? 02 John b. 1795-04 03 Hezekiah ? 04 Mary Ann? b. 1795-04 05 JOSEPH b. 1795-01 06 Hannah ? b. 1805-10 07 Male b. 1805-10 08 Female b. 1805-10 09 Female b. 1805-10 10 William S. b. 1815-20 Ellouise Schoettler provided these notes Jan 1992: JOHN SLOAN (NC) S1590, Private NC Militia, Born PA Declaration: Tenn, 1832 Sumner County. Tn. Born PA, 1759, lived there til 1766, moved to Mecklenburg County NC. In July 1776 he volunteered under Capt B? Alexander. Colonel Fifer and General Rutherford. - to guard the frontier at the head waters of the Catawba River. Fought the Cherokee Indians. His brother was wounded in 1779. John Wilson, a resident of Sumner County, being about 93 years of age grew up in the same area in Mecklenburg as John Sloan. Rec'd pension 1831 at $88.33/payperiod sent to.... ********************** I always thought it strange that Ellie's Thomas S. Sloan just happened to marry in this Co. full of the Mecklenburg Co. bunch. without there being some connection. Later, Frank Mitchell PS. There are a lot more people interested in the Sloans of Jackson Co. than I thought. More to come. "The Sloan Connection" http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html
