Before addressing your questions I'd like to hit the high points of Monita Horn's research that blew apart our theory that the Archibald Sloan of Blount Co. Tn. was a part of the Iredell Co. NC. Sloans. A lot of people are missing this info and as long as the Will E. Parham papers and those DAR records exist the subject will always keep coming up. Basically, Monita accounted for all the Archibald Sloans coming out of this line. There does not appear to be any place to fit out Blount Co. Archibald in the family. i.e. Archibald Sloan, Sr. #1 of Lancaster Co. PA. no evidence is found of him, however he is mentioned in Archibald Jr's will. Archibald Sloan, Jr./Sr. #2 dies abt 1788 in Rowan Co. NC. (there is no Iredell Co. yet) Archibald #2's son Patrick Sloan of Smith Co. Tn. names and gives date of birth of all #2's children. Archibald Sloan, Jr. #3 is born 1753 and is the Lt. Archibald Sloan from NC. that served under his brother-in-law Joseph SHARPE. This Lt. Archibald Sloan IS a contemporary of our Archibald Sloan in Blount Co. Tn. However, our Archibald must be a least 10 years older, because our's had a son William b. 1763 when the Lt. was only 10 years old. This Archibald is listed amoung 25 families from NC that took the Oath of Allegience in Natchez LA/MS on 13 May 1783. Archibald Sloan #4 of this line is b. 1766 and the son of the Capt. John Sloan that was killed at Ramsour's Mill. This one has the wife Rebecca Guy and d. in Crawford Co. Indianna. This Archibald is probably the most well known of this line and claims a lot of descendants. There is other Archibald's from this line that went from Lancaster Co. PA. to VA. If our Archibald in Blount Co. is from this line it would have to be through another branch out of Lancaster. Not impossible! | | 1. A surveyor was ordered to survey the Blount County land on 26 Feb. 1778. Arch. | had seen the land prior to that time. Was he then living in Greene County (ref. | "...friends of my father in Greene County...")? I think he probably was. Also, | his son, John, was married in Greene County in 1785. When our Archibald made the original claim in 1778, it was in then Washington Co. NC. which became Washington Co. TN. then became Green Co. Tn. then became Knox Co. Tn. then became Blount Co. TN. So, conceiveable, Archibald never left the farm and the records can show his children married in 4 different counties. I'm not really sure if Archibald ever took possession of the other two land claims. Maybe he did for a short time since he wasn't supposed to be on the 9 Mile Creek property because it still belonged to the Cherokees. Maybe the Greene Co. Tn. courthouse records can shed more light on what happen to land. | 2. Who was the "A. Sloan" who witnessed the signature of John Sloan of Blount | County to Jeremiah Green Sloan of Iredell Co., N.C., for land on Snow Creek? Old | Arch. was of course deceased; his grandson (son of John) was a minor; so Arch's | son Alexander is probably the witness. It could have been Archibald, brother of | Jeremiah Green Sloan. Also, was this Arch. (bro. of Jeremiah Green Sloan) the | Arch. who died in Indiana? Wasn't that in 1803? If so, Archibald #4 would have been abt 38. John (Jr), Archibald #4 and Geremiah Green Sloan are all brothers. | | 3. Which Arch. was named by John Sloan, father of Jeremiah Green Sloan, of Rowan | Co., N.C., as executor of his will, dated 7 Aug. 1779, (co-executor with his son | Patrick)? His son Archibald was too young (11 to 14). If our old Arch. was here | (Tenn.) at that time it wouldn't likely have been him, unless he was expected to | return. Do the Rowan County records show that an Archibald Sloan actually served | as executor of his will ( If not, it could possibly have been old Arch. and he was | no longer there), which will was probated 6 Nov. 1780. Also, it appears that this | John sloan was a contemporary of our Archibald and that they could have been | brothers. Of course our Arch. might not have established residence in Tenn. prior | to 1780, but I think that he probably had. I'm pretty sure the co-executors were his brothers Patrick and Lt. Archibald #3. Yes, his children were all too young. | 4. Do you know if the Boyds who settled in Blount county are related to the Robt. | Boyd who was in Iredell County (and was conveyed 200 A on Snow Creek by an | Archibald Sloan [Slone] 25 Oct. 1794). This Arch. Sloan apparently was still on | Snow Creek in 1794 (deed of Andrew Barkley, Sr. dated 1 Nov. 1801 witnessed by | Rebekah Sloan states that it runs to a corner where Archibald Sloan now lives [on | Snow Creek]). But it would be interesting to know if the Boyds are related, which | would tend to make one think of the possibility of both some Boyds and our Sloans | coming from N.C. to Tenn. | This must be Archibald #4 w/Rebecca. I don't have much on the Boyds, however, I wouldn't doubt it a bit, since it has been established that our Cook and McConnell kin of Blount Co. Tn. also came from Iredell Co. NC. The Cook, McConnells and Boyds are all found near the Sloans in Lancaster Co. PA. also. SO, WHERE IN THE HECK DID OUR ARCHIBALL SLOAN COME FROM???? Hope all this makes sense. Later, Frank Mitchell
