    1. Archibald and Jackson Co. Tn. AGAIN!
    2. Franklin E. Mitchell
    3. Michael, Denell, Garry & other Jackson Co. Tn. fans. Christmas came early for me this year. Yesterday I received a fantastic package of Sloan census from Monita Horn. Looks a year's worth of work for Monita and will probably take me just as long to process it into the database. The first piece of info that I looked at solved one mystery, What happen to the Archibald Sloan of Jackson Co. Tn.?? There was a theory that he was also called Alfred and that he went (back) to AL. by 1870. There is an Archibald Sloan in Smith Co. Tn. in 1840 pg. 292 [20001 01001] I originally thought this Archibald was Jr. the son of Arch. Sr. and Agnes Kelton. I then tagged him to the Archibald b. 1810 with wife Margaret W. Jetton in Rutherford Co. in 1850. After our recent discussions of Jackson/Smith Co. Sloans, I'm not too sure now. Possibly I've force fed the wrong Archibald into this family. This 1840 Arch does fit the Archibald/Nancy family perfectly. More on his at the bottom. The 1850 census of Archibald look something like this (can't find my original notes): Census 1850: Jackson Co. Tn. Fam977, pg611 Archibald Slone age 33, Va. {this Va. appears to be an error} Nancy age 33, Tn. Serena age 17 James age 13 John age 11 Thomas age 9 Pleasant age 6 Joseph age 4 William age 2 Garet age 1 {due to the age gap and the young ages of Arch & Nancy, I thought Serena was probably a sister instead of dau. I'm inclined to believe now that they really were m. and having kids at age 16.} Now the new info: 1870 Census, Allen Co. Ky. pg. 161 family #234 Archabald Sloan 54 Farmer Tenn. Nancy 54 Pleasant 23 William 21 Garrett W. 19 Martha 17 Jeoam 13 Fountain T. 9 Fam #236 Witcher, Booker 45 Farm labor Tenn. Sarenie E. 34 Tenn. John E. 9 Nancy C. 7 Sarah J. 5 William C. 3 ------- 1880 Census, pg. 148 #260 Witcher, Booker 53 Farmer T NC VA Sarena E. 45 T T T John E. 19 Ky Nancy C. 17 Sarah Jane 15 William 13 Matilda A. 10 Mary E. 7 pg. 149 #269 Sloan, Archable 58 Nancy 63 Pleasant 37 Jerome 21 Fountain 18 -------- The places of b. of the kids is unclear, that's the way Monita sent them. Monita knows better, so possible the census is also unclear. This is the second Witcher/Sloan m. out of Jackson Co. the other being Garry Porterfield's Samantha Sloan/Slone b. 1858. I'm not sure if this info helps clear up anything or not. Obviously, Archibald and Alfred are two different people. NOW!! which one is the son of Samuel and Rhoda ? I have Archibald as the son in my records, however, looking through my notes I don't have any "fact" that definitely proves that. I really don't recall if I saw some info that implied that, I assumed it or what. ***** OK, here's ANOTHER scenario for your consideration. (really would appreciate your comments!) 1. Forget the Archibald J. Sloan in Rutherford co. Tn. he's not part of the family for the time being. I don't really have anything to tie him to Smith Co. Tn. anyway, except he's the right age group. (maybe later) 2. The Archibald Sloan Jr. mentioned in will of Smith Co. Arch. Sr. (1772-1836) husband of Agnes Kelton is the Archibald in the 1840 Census of Smith Co. Tn. 3. This same Archibald is listed in Jackson Co. Tn. in 1850 with wife Nancy and by 1870 he is in Allen Co. KY. That take care of & accounts for this Archibald. 4. Now Alfred: We know he is not the same as Archibald. We know he was b. in Tn. and lived his married life in Limestone Co. AL. we know that Samuel Sloan Sr. also lived in Limestone Co. Al. from 1820-30. In my index notes I show two Samuel's in 1820 Limestone Co. however I'm missing the family makeup (anyone got it?) 5. M. Vaden notes that the Sydney C. Sloan bible entry says that Samuel/Rhoda Sloan family had a son Alfred. (Sydney also says this Samuel was called Mark, he seemed to have been confused on that point) The LDS IGI also says that Alfred is son of Samuel Jr., however, don't know the proof or evidence. Based on the evidence, I no longer feel uncomfortable "assuming" that Alfred is the son of Samuel Jr. Is there more evidence out there that I didn't mention? The only problem I have with this scenario it that it implies that I was wrong and that can't be right! <g> But, in the words of Fox Mulder "The truth is out there" Frank Mitchell -- PSC #4 Box 1681, APO AA 34004 (normal US postage, domestic rates) Phone day 011-507-287-5359 or evening 011-507-261-9757 Republic of Panama office: fmitchell@usarso-lan1.army.mil home: fmitchel@panama.phoenix.net "The Sloan Connection" http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html
