Would you also consider possibly using "The Battle Cry of Freedom" (Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys,.." ) for the Union page? Cheers and regards, Bill

    1. Sloan's on the Sultana
    2. Bill Newcomer
    3. The following information is taken from the Sultana Passenger list compiled by Jerry O. Potter, which includes previous work by Gene Salecker, and published in The Sutana Tragedy: Americas Greatest Maritime Disaster; Jerry O. Potter; Pelican Publishing Co.; (1992); pgs. 199-260. Potter says of this list: This list is by no means complete, and unfortunately, contains many inaccuracies. Gene and I faced two major problems in trying to compile an accurate list. Those problems cited by Potter were a lack of record keeping by the Army at Vicksburg at the time, and the misspelling of names that appeared in the newspapers of the time, and in a subsequent account published in 1892 by Chester Berry. More then 1,800 The Sloans on this list are: Sloan, Elzye Pvt. Co. D 102nd INF Ohio Sloan, Tildon W. Pvt. Co. I 40th INF Indiana Both of the above Sloans were survivors. For those of you who have a Civil War Sloan who may have been on the Sultana but is not mentioned above, that does not mean your Sloan was not on the Sultana. What it means is there is apparently no independent record of it. Some WWW pages of interest on the Sultana are: http://Sultana.org/ http://www.rapidnet.com/~greg/Tom/ These pages will provide the interested reader a gateway to other WWW pages on the Sultana tragedy. Franks listing of Confederate and Union Sloans, and the recent notes regarding the divided loyalties of the East Tennessee Sloans, clearly and starkly illustrate how much our American un-civil, Civil War was indeed a civil war. What a tragedy! Sloan against Sloan! James M. McPherson has written a book called For Cause and Comrade: Why Men Fought in the Civil War; Oxford University Press; (1997). Its not light reading, but for those interested in that subject, it would be well worth reading. 1. Re: Archibald d 1800, Blount Co., TN
    2. Cy Harris
    3. Frank, In looking for our Archibald's roots, maybe you might have something in your databank to answer some of these questions: 1. A surveyor was ordered to survey the Blount County land on 26 Feb. 1778. Arch. had seen the land prior to that time. Was he then living in Greene County (ref. "...friends of my father in Greene County...")? I think he probably was. Also, his son, John, was married in Greene County in 1785. 2. Who was the "A. Sloan" who witnessed the signature of John Sloan of Blount County to Jeremiah Green Sloan of Iredell Co., N.C., for land on Snow Creek? Old Arch. was of course deceased; his grandson (son of John) was a minor; so Arch's son Alexander is probably the witness. It could have been Archibald, brother of Jeremiah Green Sloan. Also, was this Arch. (bro. of Jeremiah Green Sloan) the Arch. who died in Indiana? 3. Which Arch. was named by John Sloan, father of Jeremiah Green Sloan, of Rowan Co., N.C., as executor of his will, dated 7 Aug. 1779, (co-executor with his son Patrick)? His son Archibald was too young (11 to 14). If our old Arch. was here (Tenn.) at that time it wouldn't likely have been him, unless he was expected to return. Do the Rowan County records show that an Archibald Sloan actually served as executor of his will ( If not, it could possibly have been old Arch. and he was no longer there), which will was probated 6 Nov. 1780. Also, it appears that this John sloan was a contemporary of our Archibald and that they could have been brothers. Of course our Arch. might not have established residence in Tenn. prior to 1780, but I think that he probably had. 4. Do you know if the Boyds who settled in Blount county are related to the Robt. Boyd who was in Iredell County (and was conveyed 200 A on Snow Creek by an Archibald Sloan [Slone] 25 Oct. 1794). This Arch. Sloan apparently was still on Snow Creek in 1794 (deed of Andrew Barkley, Sr. dated 1 Nov. 1801 witnessed by Rebekah Sloan states that it runs to a corner where Archibald Sloan now lives [on Snow Creek]). But it would be interesting to know if the Boyds are related, which would tend to make one think of the possibility of both some Boyds and our Sloans coming from N.C. to Tenn. I have misplaced a lot of my notes over the last 12 years and would appreciate any information you might have about the theory that our Archibald came from the Iredell County area to Green County, Tenn. I still intend to soon see if I can find anything in the Greene County records which might reflect on our Archibald. Thanks, Edwin
