    1. Archibald and Jackson Co. Tn. AGAIN!
    2. Franklin E. Mitchell
    3. Michael, Denell, Garry & other Jackson Co. Tn. fans. Christmas came early for me this year. Yesterday I received a fantastic package of Sloan census from Monita Horn. Looks a year's worth of work for Monita and will probably take me just as long to process it into the database. The first piece of info that I looked at solved one mystery, What happen to the Archibald Sloan of Jackson Co. Tn.?? There was a theory that he was also called Alfred and that he went (back) to AL. by 1870. There is an Archibald Sloan in Smith Co. Tn. in 1840 pg. 292 [20001 01001] I originally thought this Archibald was Jr. the son of Arch. Sr. and Agnes Kelton. I then tagged him to the Archibald b. 1810 with wife Margaret W. Jetton in Rutherford Co. in 1850. After our recent discussions of Jackson/Smith Co. Sloans, I'm not too sure now. Possibly I've force fed the wrong Archibald into this family. This 1840 Arch does fit the Archibald/Nancy family perfectly. More on his at the bottom. The 1850 census of Archibald look something like this (can't find my original notes): Census 1850: Jackson Co. Tn. Fam977, pg611 Archibald Slone age 33, Va. {this Va. appears to be an error} Nancy age 33, Tn. Serena age 17 James age 13 John age 11 Thomas age 9 Pleasant age 6 Joseph age 4 William age 2 Garet age 1 {due to the age gap and the young ages of Arch & Nancy, I thought Serena was probably a sister instead of dau. I'm inclined to believe now that they really were m. and having kids at age 16.} Now the new info: 1870 Census, Allen Co. Ky. pg. 161 family #234 Archabald Sloan 54 Farmer Tenn. Nancy 54 Pleasant 23 William 21 Garrett W. 19 Martha 17 Jeoam 13 Fountain T. 9 Fam #236 Witcher, Booker 45 Farm labor Tenn. Sarenie E. 34 Tenn. John E. 9 Nancy C. 7 Sarah J. 5 William C. 3 ------- 1880 Census, pg. 148 #260 Witcher, Booker 53 Farmer T NC VA Sarena E. 45 T T T John E. 19 Ky Nancy C. 17 Sarah Jane 15 William 13 Matilda A. 10 Mary E. 7 pg. 149 #269 Sloan, Archable 58 Nancy 63 Pleasant 37 Jerome 21 Fountain 18 -------- The places of b. of the kids is unclear, that's the way Monita sent them. Monita knows better, so possible the census is also unclear. This is the second Witcher/Sloan m. out of Jackson Co. the other being Garry Porterfield's Samantha Sloan/Slone b. 1858. I'm not sure if this info helps clear up anything or not. Obviously, Archibald and Alfred are two different people. NOW!! which one is the son of Samuel and Rhoda ? I have Archibald as the son in my records, however, looking through my notes I don't have any "fact" that definitely proves that. I really don't recall if I saw some info that implied that, I assumed it or what. ***** OK, here's ANOTHER scenario for your consideration. (really would appreciate your comments!) 1. Forget the Archibald J. Sloan in Rutherford co. Tn. he's not part of the family for the time being. I don't really have anything to tie him to Smith Co. Tn. anyway, except he's the right age group. (maybe later) 2. The Archibald Sloan Jr. mentioned in will of Smith Co. Arch. Sr. (1772-1836) husband of Agnes Kelton is the Archibald in the 1840 Census of Smith Co. Tn. 3. This same Archibald is listed in Jackson Co. Tn. in 1850 with wife Nancy and by 1870 he is in Allen Co. KY. That take care of & accounts for this Archibald. 4. Now Alfred: We know he is not the same as Archibald. We know he was b. in Tn. and lived his married life in Limestone Co. AL. we know that Samuel Sloan Sr. also lived in Limestone Co. Al. from 1820-30. In my index notes I show two Samuel's in 1820 Limestone Co. however I'm missing the family makeup (anyone got it?) 5. M. Vaden notes that the Sydney C. Sloan bible entry says that Samuel/Rhoda Sloan family had a son Alfred. (Sydney also says this Samuel was called Mark, he seemed to have been confused on that point) The LDS IGI also says that Alfred is son of Samuel Jr., however, don't know the proof or evidence. Based on the evidence, I no longer feel uncomfortable "assuming" that Alfred is the son of Samuel Jr. Is there more evidence out there that I didn't mention? The only problem I have with this scenario it that it implies that I was wrong and that can't be right! <g> But, in the words of Fox Mulder "The truth is out there" Frank Mitchell -- PSC #4 Box 1681, APO AA 34004 (normal US postage, domestic rates) Phone day 011-507-287-5359 or evening 011-507-261-9757 Republic of Panama office: fmitchell@usarso-lan1.army.mil home: fmitchel@panama.phoenix.net "The Sloan Connection" http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html

    1. Hello!
    2. Mike Sloan
    3. May I extend a warm and hearty greeting to all recipients from the beautiful island of Guernsey. I am Michael Charles Sloan. I am a direct descendant of James Slowan, born 11th April 1784 in Dundonald who married Ann Andrew on the 8th December 1812. He was my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. There is a possible connection to what may be his father, James Slowan of Troon. We came to Guernsey in the 1970's and were, at that time, the only Sloan family on the island. There are now another four families. We intend to make contact. I have a modest web site at http://www.guernsey.net/~gu3whn/index.html The Crest is purely symbolic, of my design, representing the Scottish Crest and Scottish Motto uncovered by my own research. The Scottish Roots page is just a quick guide and I intend passing on all the information presently available to me in a yet to be created "Notes" page. Kind regards to you all, Mike

    3. I sent this message personally but decided it might be of interest to the list so have sent it on to you also since a Fergus Sloan had been a recent subject also. Nancy Giles Hi Sandra - Going over some older posts I copied and came across your of April 10, 1998 and have some information I can add to your Fergus Sloan, Jr. This is not my line of Sloan (at least I haven't proven it to be yet!). >From the Iredell County Tracks,(a quarterly published by Iredell County Gen. Soc.) probably the Feb edition as the top of my paper says continued from October 1991 Tracks and these usually were published quarterly: Pioneer Certificate Abstracts Pioneer Fergus Sloan (Sr.) was born in 1724, moved into the Iredell area on 27 August 1751, and died in Lincoln county, N. Jane Stevenson; Ann (1759 - )mar. Mussendine Matthews; Margaret (1763 -) mar William Harris; Robert (1767 -) mar. Martha Harris; Fergus (1770 -) mar. Prudence King. Applicants: Mittie E. Hill Linney, 322 Broad St., Statesville, NC. and her daughter, Evangelena Barber. Sandra: I don't know if the above address is still viable, but I am sure you can check with either the telephone company for that area or an internet site like WHOWHERE. Or contact the Iredell County Gen. Society (again I don't have an address for them, but sure you could find it through Gen Web). Hope this was of help to you. Nancy Giles

    3. Let me elaborate on the "relationship" between Henry Sloan and George Sloan of the Trading Ford area of old Rowan Co. NC. I have investigated George in the hopes of finding some relationship to Henry but I have never found any proof that they were anything more than neighbors. In the book "The Rowan Story 1753-1953" by James S. Brawley he printed an abstract of a 1759 Tax List that lists George as the son of Henry, on p.356. This abstract was not taken from the original but from a hand written transcription. Jo White Linn printed a transcription of the same 1759 Tax List in her book "Rowan County, NC Tax List 1757-1800" but she used the original document and her list, on page 33, reads "Henry Sloan and son Jas.", not George. George is listed seperately on this list. I think the incorrect Brawley list has confused some people including me. The latest record I have seen of George in Rowan was 1764. Did he die or did he move? If he did move where did he go? 3. Hi Folks, This morning, I ran across a query posted by Syndey Tabler on the GenForum looking for info on a Robert Archibald Sloan b. 1876 MO. I'm pretty sure I've placed Robert Archibald Sloan with the right parents and I've contructed a fairly probably line out of Arkansas. (see Below) Can anyone help with this line? It looks line another Thomas Sloan from NC. relocated to TN. for awhile then to AR. Some possibles in Tn. are a Thomas in Maury Co. and a Thomas Smith/Sumner Co. in 1820. There is a Thomas in White Co. however, I believe he ends up in Bledsoe Co. Tn. I'd forgotten about that Thomas (b. 1776-94) in Smith Co. Tn. in 1820. I think he the same Thomas on 1811 Sumner Co. tax list. ANY IDEAS? Not a son of Patrick is he? Too old to be Ellie's Thomas Shields Sloan. There were some others mentioned being Franklin, Nathaniel, Jesse, Sarah A., Richard and Lucy. There were numerous Sloans also. I violated my own rule though and didn't copy every page with a reference to these families.

    1. Archibald and John
    2. Frank and ALL - I'm still a Newbie at Sloan genealogy, but I think the coincidence that Archibald(2) and John Sloan both lived in Smith County, Tennessee in the same time frame is a bit singular. Could it be that Archibald(1)s father was the brother of John Sloan's father James Sloan? John Sloan is listed in Macon County, TN, but he settled in the area before Macon County was formed from Sumner, Smith, and ? counties. In fact the county seat of Smith County, Carthage is certainly close to that part of Sumner/Macon where John Sloan lived. Even today, that part of Tennessee is not as heavily populated as adjoining areas, so it seems unlikely that the two Sloan lines were randomly attracted there. Any Ideas???? Helen, As far as I know Archibald Sloan #2 was never in Smith Co. Tn. However, two of his sons, Patrick (b. 1747) and Samuel (b. 1758) died there. Your John Sloan (b. 1759) is certainly a contemporary and I think, all three fought in the Revolutionary War. The coincidence of the two family living a few miles apart goes back a long way. Prior to the Smith/Sumner/Macon/Jackson Co. Tn. area. they lived in Iredell/Mecklenburg Co. NC. prior to that both families came from Lancaster Co. PA. area. Don't forget prior to 1749 Lancaster Co. Pa. covered about half the state. Your John Sloan (b. 1759) is (pretty sure) the son of James Sloan that d. 1796 in Mecklenburg Co. NC. This would make James and Archibald#2 contemporaries and possibly brothers. Here the theory starts falling apart. Archibald#2 did have a brother named James and it's been established that this James d. 25 Dec 1775 in Hanover Twp. Lancaster Co. PA. (later part of Dauphin Co. PA.) I believe that someone said that your James Sloan was born at Sea. Does anyone remember where that titbit come from?? Sometimes I think these migration patterns may be based on the fact that there weren't that many roads or trails to choose from. On 7 Nov 98 "Edwin Harris" <themvols@bellsouth.net> Wrote: | In looking for our Archibald's roots, maybe you might have something in your | databank to answer some of these questions: Cousin Edwin and other Archibald fans, Sorry for the delay, been tied up with the Sloan Yankees. Before addressing your questions I'd like to hit the high points of Monita Horn's research that blew apart our theory that the Archibald Sloan of Blount Co. Tn. was a part of the Iredell Co. NC. Sloans. A lot of people are missing this info and as long as the Will E. Parham papers and those DAR records exist the subject will always keep coming up. Basically, Monita accounted for all the Archibald Sloans coming out of this line. There does not appear to be any place to fit out Blount Co. Archibald in the family. i.e. Archibald Sloan, Sr. #1 of Lancaster Co. PA. no evidence is found of him, however he is mentioned in Archibald Jr's will. Archibald Sloan, Jr./Sr. #2 dies abt 1788 in Rowan Co. NC. (there is no Iredell Co. yet) Archibald #2's son Patrick Sloan of Smith Co. Tn. names and gives date of birth of all #2's children. Archibald Sloan, Jr. #3 is born 1753 and is the Lt. Archibald Sloan from NC. that served under his brother-in-law Joseph SHARPE. This Lt. Archibald Sloan IS a contemporary of our Archibald Sloan in Blount Co. Tn. However, our Archibald must be a least 10 years older, because our's had a son William b. 1763 when the Lt. was only 10 years old. This Archibald is listed amoung 25 families from NC that took the Oath of Allegience in Natchez LA/MS on 13 May 1783. Archibald Sloan #4 of this line is b. 1766 and the son of the Capt. John Sloan that was killed at Ramsour's Mill. This one has the wife Rebecca Guy and d. in Crawford Co. Indianna. This Archibald is probably the most well known of this line and claims a lot of descendants. There is other Archibald's from this line that went from Lancaster Co. PA. to VA. If our Archibald in Blount Co. is from this line it would have to be through another branch out of Lancaster. Not impossible! | | 1. A surveyor was ordered to survey the Blount County land on 26 Feb. 1778. Arch. | had seen the land prior to that time. Was he then living in Greene County (ref. | "...friends of my father in Greene County...")? I think he probably was. Also, | his son, John, was married in Greene County in 1785. When our Archibald made the original claim in 1778, it was in then Washington Co. NC. which became Washington Co. TN. then became Green Co. Tn. then became Knox Co. Tn. then became Blount Co. TN. So, conceiveable, Archibald never left the farm and the records can show his children married in 4 different counties. I'm not really sure if Archibald ever took possession of the other two land claims. Maybe he did for a short time since he wasn't supposed to be on the 9 Mile Creek property because it still belonged to the Cherokees. Maybe the Greene Co. Tn. courthouse records can shed more light on what happen to land. | 2. Who was the "A. Sloan" who witnessed the signature of John Sloan of Blount | County to Jeremiah Green Sloan of Iredell Co., N.C., for land on Snow Creek? Old | Arch. was of course deceased; his grandson (son of John) was a minor; so Arch's | son Alexander is probably the witness. It could have been Archibald, brother of | Jeremiah Green Sloan. Also, was this Arch. (bro. of Jeremiah Green Sloan) the | Arch. who died in Indiana? Wasn't that in 1803? If so, Archibald #4 would have been abt 38. John (Jr), Archibald #4 and Geremiah Green Sloan are all brothers. | | 3. Which Arch. was named by John Sloan, father of Jeremiah Green Sloan, of Rowan | Co., N.C., as executor of his will, dated 7 Aug. 1779, (co-executor with his son | Patrick)? His son Archibald was too young (11 to 14). If our old Arch. was here | (Tenn.) at that time it wouldn't likely have been him, unless he was expected to | return. Do the Rowan County records show that an Archibald Sloan actually served | as executor of his will ( If not, it could possibly have been old Arch. and he was | no longer there), which will was probated 6 Nov. 1780. Also, it appears that this | John sloan was a contemporary of our Archibald and that they could have been | brothers. Of course our Arch. might not have established residence in Tenn. prior | to 1780, but I think that he probably had. I'm pretty sure the co-executors were his brothers Patrick and Lt. Archibald #3. Yes, his children were all too young. | 4. Do you know if the Boyds who settled in Blount county are related to the Robt. | Boyd who was in Iredell County (and was conveyed 200 A on Snow Creek by an | Archibald Sloan [Slone] 25 Oct. 1794). This Arch. Sloan apparently was still on | Snow Creek in 1794 (deed of Andrew Barkley, Sr. dated 1 Nov. 1801 witnessed by | Rebekah Sloan states that it runs to a corner where Archibald Sloan now lives [on | Snow Creek]). But it would be interesting to know if the Boyds are related, which | would tend to make one think of the possibility of both some Boyds and our Sloans | coming from N.C. to Tenn. | This must be Archibald #4 w/Rebecca. I don't have much on the Boyds, however, I wouldn't doubt it a bit, since it has been established that our Cook and McConnell kin of Blount Co. Tn. also came from Iredell Co. NC. The Cook, McConnells and Boyds are all found near the Sloans in Lancaster Co. PA. also. SO, WHERE IN THE HECK DID OUR ARCHIBALL SLOAN COME FROM???? Hope all this makes sense. Later, Frank Mitchell
