    1. Sloan Family in South Georgia
    2. Frank Sloan
    3. My gggrandfather was Allen Sloan of Decatur County Ga. , listed on the 1830 census. Allen was married to Nancy ?? listed as born in NC. Frank Mitchell's Sloan Connection lists this line and has Allen listed as William A. Sloan born in NC. Why? No information in the database. The two oldest children are listed on the 1850 Decatur Co Ga census as born in SC. With those dates as a guideline the Allen Sloan family must have arrived in GA in 1828 or 29 since the next child is listed as born in GA and age 21 in 1850. The 1830 census lists Allen and Nancy as less than 30 years old, therfore both were probably born around 1800-1802. Does anyone have any information on this line in either SC or NC?

I have a 1985 FGS from Juanita Reynolds of Brandon FL. that I found at the National Genealogical Soc. for James C. Sloan and wife Susan H. Bowers. She list a dau Elizabeth b. c1831? with a spouse of ---- Douglas. In the 1850 Cenus, James & Susan have a dau Charlotte E. Sloan age 19. My notes refer to a will abstract naming the children, however, I was unable to find my copy of the abstract. An interesting side note. The FGS list the husband of James' dau Mary Ann Sloan as Allison DEWEESE. For me this line is ANOTHER early James Sloan line of Mecklenburg Co. NC. of unknown origin. James was m. to a Sarah and he d. abt Apr 1772 Normal assortment of children named John, James, Robert, David, Mary, Sarah & Nancy. And liked to m. the Curry girls. Does anyone know anything about origin of this family? Please don't tell me they are from Lancaster Co. PA.!! 3. When I saw MY Elizabeth Sloan in your last message I just had to jump on board! I call her "Elusive Elizabeth" or "Lusive Liz" for short, to distinguish her from at least five other Elizabeth Sloans who are contemporary to her. In over 12 years, I have not found the first clue about her identity. The only name that appears with her is Walter Carruth - who signs the marriage bond in Rowan County in 1766. The Carruths came from Lancaster PA where they probably arrived ca 1729, and I have assumed up to this point that the Morrison Family into which Elizabeth married came to this country at the same time, and probably a or several Sloan families. A letter from a grandaughter of Elizabeth's, speaking of Elizabeth's mother, says that "Grandmother's mother was a sister to Grandfather McCorkle" here referring to Alexander McCorkle. So there must have been a Sloan - McCorkle marriage, with Elizabeth a child of that marriage ca ca 1740, probably in Lancaster Co. PA. Elizabeth and Andrew migrated to Franklin Co. TN ca 1810, where he died in 1812, leaving his wife (named in the will) and several children named also. His children William Hays and ANdrew SLoan preceded him to TN. Elizabeth and Andrew are my 4x great grandparents, and I have done a good bit of work on them and their 8 children. I would be happy to correspond with anyone researching these families, and can be reached by snail mail at 3730 Drakewood Drive, Cincinnati OH 45209.

    3. I have today spent some time searching the local reference sources for the name Slone. I offer the following entry in one British source without further comment: "Variations: (On Sloan) Sloane, Slo(y)ne, Slowan, Sloyan." I have now added some personal notes to my website:- http://www.guernsey.net/~gu3whn/index.hmtl but they are only for the brave! I also found brief notes on American Biographies for Sloan. Sloan, Alfred Pritchard, Jr. (1875 -1966) Sloan, Eric, born Everard Jean Hinrichs (1905 - 85) Sloan, James Forman "Todhunter" (1873-1933) Even heard of him myself. I was called "Tod" Sloan by some in the 1940's! Sloan, John (French) (1871 - 1951) Sloan, Samuel (1815 - 84) I am quite sure that these are, however, well recorded. My few hours today have exhausted the information in the local library. My immediate interest is in my early Scottish family but I will always be keen to hear from the rest of the Clan. The kilt has been shaken out for the St Andrew's Night Dinner! Kind regards Mike

Margaret Hall, daughter of your Elizabeth Sloan and Thomas Hall married James Hill. Their son John Sloan Hill married Henrietta Deweese, daughter of Jonathan Deweese and Margaret Boyd Irvin. Jonathan was the brother to our Aaron Deweese who was married to Elizabeth Sloan, daughter of James Sloan and Frances Brown (daughter of Benjamin Brown and Nancy Sloan) of Mecklenburg. Has anyone found a connection between Fergus Sloan and James Sloan? Has anyone been able to determine what Sloan family Nancy Sloan who was the wife of Benjamin Brown belongs to? 3. Spencer, What you write is very interesting. Three years ago, I contacted a number of Slones and Sloans that were listed on the Internic (rs.internic.net). One gentlemen's (Slone) family was of Jewish origin from Slovania (I'll have to try and dig up the emails we sent back and forth). We didn't find any common relatives, although his family journeyed to the US in the early 1900s, if I remember correctly, from eastern Europe. This was the only instance of a Jewish origin I have found to the Slone name. My direct family written history seems to suggest that my distance relatives came to the US from Ireland in the 1700s. Again, three years ago, I started putting some information up on a web site, but I didn't get to far. Please reference http://nuke.westlab.com/Slone/ for the information, and in particular the "Genealogy of the Slone Family" at http://nuke.westlab.com/Slone/slone.html. To promote further discussion and remembering a recent thread regarding Samuel Slone, at the request of my Uncle, Wallace B. Slone, I looked up my Grandfather's father (John Charles Breckenridge Slone) in the 1860 US census records several years ago. Here's what I found: 1860 Census - United States Virginia - Lee County - The Western District (Town/Township) - Jonesville (Post Office) page 829, dwelling number 1019, family number 1051 Name Age Sex Color Occupation Birthplace Samuel Slone 35 M W Farmer Harlan, KY Elizabeth C. 30 F Housekeeper Lee County, VA William 8 M Lee County, VA Ann J. 6 F Lee County, VA John C. B. 4 M Lee County, VA Nancy 2 F Lee County, VA John C. B. Slone married Leah Cathrine Spears or Spencer and had four children: Name Birth Died Birthplace Charles Walker 1879 1959 Samuel James Benjamin Jefferson 8/31/1880 3/5/1959 Mt. Sterling, KY Benjamin J. Slone married Della Edna Noe and had ten children including my father, Benjamin Jefferson Slone, Jr. and Wallace Bert, both of whom were born in Middlesboro, KY. When I get a chance, I will work on getting a web site together of the information I have been provided by Wallace B. Slone, Leah Mae Slone Palmer, Ray Palmer (Leah's son), and Patti Shackelford Hobson (Ben Slone's daughter's daughter's daughter - I hope I got this correct Patti) and I have collected. As a final note regarding the Slone versus Sloan naming convention, my grandfather's (Benjamin J. Slone) social security card has his last name spelled "Sloan." Also, Wallace B. Slone has shown that our lineage is related to Alfred P. Sloan, the former CEO of General Motors, who used to attend the Sloan/Slone reunion in Ohio. Maybe its just a spelling problem. 2. Franklin and All, Just want to point out that part of Smith and Jackson Counties became Macon County in 1842, after the 1840 census. Also, Allen County, KY was adjacent to the Macon/Jackson County area. My point is that I still think it very singular that this Archibald Sloan line would be in the same rural area as my JOHN Sloan line unless they were somehow related. To me, your most recent posting seems to be a further indication of the possibility of relationship. Helen D.
