I think that he was born in Milan, Erie County, Ohio 7 Apr 1855 to William SLOAN and Mary WILLIAMS. Any information to either connect or to prove that these SLOAN's buired in the Rushsylvania Cemetary are related to me or not would be very appreciated. Rushsylvania is a farming community and there were Church of the Brethren living in that area around 1838. Thanks, Dave Sloan

    1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] New List Manager Name Corrections
    2. Garry Porterfield
    3. In my hurried frenzy to find, assign, and notify new list managers, I did a lot of message cut 'n paste. As a result, several messages went out with email addresses, names, list names, etc. messed up. So here is a summary of the persons taking over my lists; hopefully this will correct the confusion I may have created. Frank Mitchell (SLOAN-SLONE LIST) fmitchel@panama.phoenix.net John Snoddy (SNODDY LIST) john@snoddy.com Carol Middleton (LANGFORD LIST) cmddltn@bellsouth.net Ginny Thomison (WITCHER LIST) speedieG@webtv.net David Teal (TEEL-TEAL LIST) dteal@dircon.co.uk Tom Nagy (LOYD-LLOYD LIST) tomnagy@nauticom.net I hereby express my sincere thanks to the above brave souls for quickly relieving me of six of a thousand task before me. As of this moment I am now off all the lists as list manager. Any problems you have that need list manager attention should be directed to the above person (BUT THERE SHOULD BE NO NEW ISSUES, RIGHT? GIVE THE NEW LIST MANAGERS A LITTLE SLACK TO START). These volunteers were selected primarily on the basis of their experience as A) list managers of other lists, or B) DP/IT professionals, some cases both. They have volunteered to perform any administrative work required to keep the list active. PLEASE APPLAUD THEM, and please support their admin efforts. You may see a few differences in list appearance or functioning as they imprint their own personalities onto the job. I received email from others willing to volunteer for the task, and I hope I have hurt no one's feelings by not selecting them. I started these lists to supplement the already existing PORTERFIELD list a few years back to assist in locating my ancestors. They have been productive. Many fine 'amateur' researchers of professional level exist out there, and it is they that make the list, not the list manager. Keep up the good work, subscribers. Now I can get back to packing Regards, Garry Porterfield

    1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] RE Attachments
    2. Garry Porterfield
    3. Actually, rootsweb has good technical reasons for the no attachment rule: if it is allowed, then all kinds of memory hungary .gifs, entire gedcom files, forwarded web pages, etc invariably get sent. Rootsweb runs on a fine line budget, and needs to conserve resources, on of which is memory. Remember that all messages posted end up in a permanent archive. There are two easy ways around the issue: 1) regarding attachment of word files, just type into word, select all, copy, and paste into the email message. I do this all the time for resumes, etc., and it is easy for list messages. Since text only is allowed, text formatting will be lost in either case. 2) .gifs, very long gedcoms, web page forwards, etc can always be sent direct to the interested parties email address with abandon. The list is to share enough information to develop contacts and mutual interests. Posting a very large file or attachment to a list of 200 persons, when only 5 may be interested in the detail only strains rootsweb's resources, and increases 200 person'swait to download their email. Web pages are good for containing detail.Fine detail that ensues due to a contact should occur by direct email, and typically many email exchanges occur to a good query match. All of these need not be posted. That makes the list appear as a chat room. I have refused to stay subscribed to some county and regional lists exactly because of the cahtty nature of the posts. Yep, I am still here, and as ornery as usual :) regards, Garry P.

    3. The biggest reason it It ties up the Rootsweb's server system resources. A lot of people would not want the attachments or gedcoms. Our information may not be valuable to everyone on the list. Normal text (ansi) attachments cannot contain a virus. However, Word (binary) files can contain macro viruses. Many people don't pay attention to the size of the file they are sending. My isp freezes up somewhere at about 1.5 mb. Luckily they have an online utility where I can go in myself and purge the offending files. Not everyone has been provided that service by their isp, and have to contact technical support and have them do it for them. It also stops those so called virtual business cards from filling up my hard drive with senseless dribble, when that information can easily be included in their signature line. I applauded the day when they added the filters to stop accepting attachments. 2. Frank and ALL, Since someone brought up the subject of attachments, may I take the liberty to put in "my two=cents worth. Rootsweb definitely forbids attachments, and I can see a justification for this in terms of transmitting viruses via e-mail attachments. Most of us use Virus protecting programs. This does, however, penalize the exchange of genealogy data for me (perhaps others) in another way; i.e. I can type a more lengthy data entry by first entering in MSWord while offline, and then, attaching MSWord Document to an e-mail to the Mail List while online. When I enter the data in a message box, I am more likely to introduce mistakes. Another argument for attachments is that my ISP and at least some others, will disconnect after a defined period of time. I know about changing the number of minutes before disconnect in Netscape, and have tried that, but the results are not permanent. Prevention of attachments also precludes the attachment of Gedcoms. Most of us have a limited amount of time to devote to e-mails, and we could share the materials with more Mail List members more readily if rootsweb would allow attachments. David & Everyone, As list owner I have not read a list of dos and don'ts yet, However, I'm pretty sure that sending attachments to the list is a "NO NO" Probably spreads disease etc. I think attachments foul up Rootsweb 's system and they outright reject them. However, I personally would love a copy and I would be glad to pass it along to others. Or, they should request it directly from you. If I remember correctly, your line stems from a Samuel Sloan b. abt 1783 in MD and went to Mason/Fulton Co. IL. descendants to AR., Tx. and all over the place. Anyone interested can see some of the line at: http://www.gendex.com/users/fmitchel/sloan/D0008/G0000048.html#I01544 Normally text or RTF is easiest for others to read, a simple text file of 30 pages is not that big a file.. Also always use short file names like myfile.txt etc. Long file names supported by Windows 95 etc. are sometimes hard to save and load. When you get it ready, you're welcome to use me as a test to see if it is readable and I can let the group know it's ready. 2. I wish I could find more information on our Margaret Alexander Sloan. Some of her children's death certificates have her name as Margaret Clark and others as Margaret Alexander.. but family history says it was Alexander. I rather suspect she is closely related to the public figure, Isaac Alexander, in said county. Her first son was William W. Sloan, <my g grandfather> b. NC; and 2nd son was Isaac Alexander Sloan, b. KY. The rest of her children were born in KY.. but the entire family migrated to Miller Co MO after about 18 or 20 years in KY. They are buried in Miller Co. MO. There have been several theories on her maiden surname. Was she married before or was Clark a middle name? I am open to suggestions too...I have made copies of land transferrals in this county, but so far nothing that would direct me to her parents. Mary: Perhaps you could comment on this information. 3. Frank Mitchell at fmitchel@panama.phoenix.net has volunteered as the new SLOAN list manager. He is much more active than I, and I am sure he will provide the list with more attention than I have recently. Thanks, Frank. Thank you for supporting the list. Please support Frank. I will become a subscriber again when the relocation dust settles. Garry P.

    3. I will probably be relocating in the very near future, and will have a lengthy interruption of internet service. Although the list could probably function without attention, it should not be left without an attendant. I am soliciting a volunteer to take over the function of list manager. The credentials required to manage the list are very few: have web access, posess and know how to operate an email program, and to posess and know how to operate a web browser. All control of the list options is through a password protected web page. All that has to be done is for me to change the email address identified as list manager, and send the new manager the URL and password of the web access. It is best if the handoff is done rather soon, so as to give the new list manager a window of opportunity to ask me any questions while I still have a connection. I will "award" the list to the 1) most sincere, 2)most interested, 3) first, 4) only only, or 5) the winner of the coin flip, depending on how many persons respond. If you are interested in assuring that the list continues, please do not be bashful about volunteering. I can assure you that the responsibility and amount of work associated with list manager is very small, so don't be shy or feel that you are unqualified. Only the most timid or very new of the list subscribers would be intimidated. Thank You, Garry Porterfield
