An update to my earlier posting. This afternoon I received a packet of information on my SLOAN family from a volunteer of the Hopkins County Genealogical Society (TX). Amid this information is a write-up on this family from the "Pioneers of Hopkins County, Texas - Volume II", published by Henington Publishing Company, Wolfe City, Texas 75496, compiled by Sylvia M. Kibart and Rita M. Adams, Co-Editors for the Hopkins County Genealogical Society. Copyright 1989. According to this county history, John B. SLOAN was born in Monroe County, Tennessee on February 12, 1835. He was the son of Alexander SLOAN and Nancy Mary MORRISON. Alexander SLOAN was a Justice of the Peace in Monroe County. John B. SLOAN married Serenia J. RICHARDSON in Tennessee. According to this history, their three oldest children, George, Bernice (Nettie), and Melissa, were born in Tennessee. John B. SLOAN joined the Hamilton's Confederate Tennessee Cavalry (Jackson County) in 1862 and was captured in 1863, taken to Kentucky and then top Illinois as a prisoner of war. His family joined him in Illinois where their next three children were born. At some point the returned to Tennessee, found their home destroyed by carpetbaggers and moved on to Texas in 1873 by covered wagon. I now have most of the dates of birth of their children and the names of their spouses. This is very exciting for me, three years of searching and all this information pouring in in less than a week. Amazing! My heartfelt thanks to the USGenWeb, TXGenWeb, Hopkins County Coordinator, and the wonderful volunteers of the Hopkins County Genealogical Society. If you connect to this SLOAN family, please contact me. FRANK - DO YOU SEE THIS??????? I can't believe it. Lila
With the wonderful information I received through the obituary on my grand-uncle Oscar Sloan, a wonderful researcher in Hopkins County, TX provided me with the following 1880 Hopkins County Census Information. As you can see, this family was in Tennessee from at least 1835 through 1870 or a little later. If you recognize this family, or have any resources that might indicate where in Tennessee this family is from, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. My g.g.g. grandfather was James SLOAN. He married Elizabeth CONNELL in Dalry, Ayreshire in 1823. They had a son William SLOAN born in 1824, also in Dalry. On William's marriage certificate (Vic. 1866) it states that his father James was a "clothier", and I assume in Dalry. I have seen recently (on the net) that there was a James SLOAN who had a drapery shop in Glascow, but have not been able to retrace my steps to find where I saw this info. The 1851 census shows that all three people had left Dalry. William came to Australia in 1853. Could someone confirm that James had a business in Dalry? Better still, does anyone know these SLOANS. I would be grateful to hear from anyone, no matter how insignificant the info may seem. Thanks. I am new to this listing and just found this family after many years of looking in the wrong places with the wrong name. A lot of Sloan names in this writing so continue reading through the first part. Amanda (Sloan) Pinion married William Costner in 1874 in Cartersville, GA. I looked for years in Pinion families not knowing she was first a Sloan until I found a marriage record for Amanda Sloan marrying Fletcher Pinion in 1870 in Gordon County, GA. She is also there for the 1870 Census with the Pinions living next door to a Washington Sloan, her brother. What I know now and would like to find others looking for this family. Archibald Sloan in 1778 received one of the first land deeds in the new County of Blount, TN. He had a son named Robert, born May28, 1776 in either NC or VA (not researched). In 1801 Robert married Margaret Cook, the daughter of James Cook and Ann Ford. I have not look for either of these families. Robert and Margaret Sloan moved to Murray County, Ga and by 1840 Robert had a plantation on both sides of the Conasauga River. Their children are: 1. James Sloan - born 1/27/1803; lived in Polk Co, TN Ruth - 4/16/1804 (nothing is known) 2. Archibald - 10/1/1806 3. John - 3/22/1808 d.1877 Alexander - 1/10/1810 - d. 1828 Sarah - 5/28/1811 - d. 1837 Ann - 5/31/1813 d. 1814 Jane - 4/1/1815 d. 1887 4. William - 7/11/1817 d. 1852 5. James'' children are: Felix Alexander, robert F., Dr. Fielding Pope, Mary E., James Brown, William Eskine, Dr. Flavel Baxter, Thomas Wisner, Archibald Nevins. I have a little more on this family. 2. Archibald married Jane Ann Baker and Arreva Permelia Carpenter - children are: Harriet, James A., Samuel B., Archibald A., Mary M, Elizabethk America, Lenora, Robert, Sarah. I have a little more on this family. 3. John's married Julia A. children are: Sarah Jane, Margaret, 4. William married Susan Tate in Murry Co, GA Children are: WAshington A., Martha G., Jackson Boyd, malinda, Robert Pope, Amanda (the relative I searched for for years) 5. Ellis married Permelia Green Freeman children are: Mary Eliz., Robert B., Manerva Ann, Emily Jane, Julius C., nancy R. M. , William Emerson, Elbert Owen, Roselah E., Cordelia, Charles Lee, Elis S. Julie E. have a little more about this family. They go to Ark. and TX There was also something about a William Nelson Sloan as the great great nephew of Robert Sloan born in TN, son of George W. Sloan and Mary C. Reed. His children are Nora Emma, George Alvin, thoms tloyd, Henry Melvin, Linda Laura, Eula Lee, James Glenn (some names in this family may be left out.) All of the above was taken from the book on Murry County, GA in the library. Hope this helps others and also locates "cousins" Thanks. Dcost@compuserve.com

I recognized your material as being from the Sloan Family article I wrote for the the Murray County Heritage Book back in the 1980s. Unfortunately, NO new information on our old Archibald since that time. There is one error in that article, I've discovered that the wife of James Cook was Ann McConnell (not Ann Ford). The Cooks and McConnells came to Blount Co. Tn. from Iredell Co. NC. I'll get back to you with more details. For those of you that frequent my website, I've added something new. On my Researcher/Queries page, I've linked the Country, State and County locations to Rootsweb's GenWeb sites. I think I did more for my benefit than anything else, I love to visit these sites. I also added some cute little "flying" flags which have slowed down the page loading. The flags may have to go. Robin, One more thing, Since John was killed, of course he didn't receive any pension. Documents might be listed under wife Mary's name. I am searching for the family of Peter Sloan who married Elizabeth Petery and had 10 sons, Archibald, Joseph, Henry, Elias, Lafayette, David, William, Washington, John & Nathan. He is supposed to have been born in KY, but I suspect he really came from Virginia. One son, Archibald is often shown as born in VA, but married 27 oct 1817 in Maryland to Margaret Kephart. All the other children were born in Maryland. My direct line is Henry, b. 1803 in MD, m. 27 Jan 1827 to Elizabeth Ann Myer. Most of the families moved to Ohio where Peter died about 1843, and the rest scattered from there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sally
Hi Folks, Frank Mitchell here. The Rootsweb newsletter recently mentioned their Ship Passenger List website. I search it out for Sloans (no Slones or Sloanes) and didn't find too much. What I did find, I couldn't identify. These Sloans are relatively "just off the boat" a 100 years ago. My first E-mail query came from Garry Porterfield back in 1996. He was looking for Samathia "Mattie" Sloan of Jackson Co. Tn. Based on Mattie being Martha I pointed him towards Samathia being Martha dau of Isaac in the 1860 census of Jackson Co. Tn. So all that is really my doings! We've been looking for verification on that ever since. Looks like you've provided the nail in the coffen to kill that theory. Garry and I are both missing that 1870 census record for Jessie Sloan. Yes, there are definitely more than one Jessie in that Tri-state neighborhood, maybe 3 of them. This 1850 census record has always been confusing: 1850 Jackson Co., TN (3D-1015) Jesse Slone 79 NC Margaret 35 TN John 14 TN Selia 1 TN William 4 TN Sampson Braswell 12 TN Silvy Braswell 40 TN William Braswell 3 TN Mark Slone 60 VA ********************* According to Edna Sloan Cooksey this is Jessie Elias Sloan and his half brother Samuel Mark "Sampson" Sloan, sons of Patrick Sloan. I'm not sure the relationship of the rest of the household. Is Margaret, Jessie's dau, dau-in-law or a very young wife? Whatever the relationship, she and Selia/Cilia appear to show up in 1870 in MACON Co. TN.!! So, the link is there. I think somewhere in Michael Vaden research he may have had a Jessie Sloan b. c1823 of Lafayette, Macon Co., TN, as son of Samuel & Rhoda Sloan. A lot discussion has come and gone since then I'm not sure if that's still valid or not. Michael, can you comment?? Actually, there are many, many things I've not sure of. I'm mainly waiting for Edna to put out her Sloan book. SO, your Jessie b. 1825 Tn. could be a Jessie Jr. (Jessie Sr. would've been age 55) or maybe son of Samuel & Rhoda Sloan (Samuel age 30, probably from his 1st unknown wife). There really are many possibilities. Another thought, your "Sale of Easom Graves Property after his death in the spring of 1843" does imply there is a connection between Jessie and Isaac & Jonathan. That still has not been worked out. Thanks for the info. I guess now it's really clear as mud. Frank Mitchell PS. To CajunKatie, Gary Porterfield, Frank Mitchell.... A HUGH thank you. Frank knows how desparately I've been trying to locate any possible information about my Grandfather and his family. Because of illness I'd stayed away from my computer for a couple of days and when I came on-line this morning, found the following e-mail. Oscar Sloan is one of the few names I knew of in this family but I had been unable to locate anything on him. Thank you so much for sending this to the list. Your kindness in sharing with the list and Gary and Frank's in keeping the list going, has provided me a much needed missing link. I am so grateful and excited! O. S. (Oscar) SLOAN, a former resident of this county and well known to a number of residents in the Doans and Fargo Communities died suddenly of a heart attack in Plainview at his home last week. Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church in that city with REV. AARON SHAW and REV. L.B. REAVES, Baptist Ministers officiating. Interment was made at the Plainview Cemetery. A clipping from a Plainview newspaper, mailed to the Vernon Times for publication by his wife, the former MISS NELL MILLER, a native of this county, gives the following information regarding the death of her husband: "O. S. SLOAN, a resident here the past six years, died of a heart attack late Friday afternoon. He was stricken while sitting in his car at the city auditorium where he was employed as caretaker. A passerby noticed that he was ill and an ambulance was summoned. He died a few minutes after reaching the hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1885, at Cumby in Hopkins County, SLOAN moved with his parents to the Indian territory in Oklahoma when he was a year old. Later he moved from Oklahoma to Vernon where on Oct. 5, 1907, he was married to MISS CLARA NELL MILLER, who is among survivors. In 1917 the family moved from Vernon to Amarillo where SLOAN was employed in the Santa Fe railway shops for three years. He then engaged in the real estate business with L.S. GILL (and) for a time was in 1923 joined the Amarillo Police force. In 1925 he became deputy sheriff under WYLIE POLLARD and in 1927 the family moved to Eakly, OK, where SLOAN farmed. In 1938 the family moved to PLAINVIEW. SLOAN was a member of the Baptist Church. Besides his wife, two daughters; MISSES IMOGENE and EVELYN SLOAN, both of Plainview, survive. Also surviving are a brother JOHN SLOAN, Glendale, CA; two sisters; MRS. J.F. GARRETT, Wichita Falls, and MRS. JAMES W. PATTERSON, Ft. Help, Can someone help me with identifing the following SLOAN's that I found online in the Zanesville Cemetary, Logan County, Ohio: SLOAN Andrew 2 Oct 1812-8 Aug 1896 Andrew 1853-1926 Bertha Parker 24 May 1865-3 Jun 1946 Earl S. 8 Sep 1848-13 Sep 1923 Emily S. d 2 Jun 1857 ae 25y 2m Henary C. d. 10 Aug 1857 John 1786-1867 Polley d 17 Aug 1844 ae 21y 29d Susan B. 21 Mar 1822-3 Feb 1893 Wilson S. 2 Oct 1858 ae 34y 9m 7d My Great Grandfather William Edward SLOAN and Margaret CASKEY were married in Logan County, Ohio before 1885. I think that he was born in Milan, Erie County, Ohio 7 Apr 1855 to William SLOAN and Mary WILLIAMS. Any information to either connect or to prove that these SLOAN's buired in the Rushsylvania Cemetary are related to me or not would be very appreciated. Rushsylvania is a farming community and there were Church of the Brethren living in that area around 1838. Thanks, Dave Sloan
