Haven't posted this in awhile, but I come from a large Sloan family that settled in Detroit. The family originated in Kilkeel Parish, Co. Down, Ireland. Looks like most of them arrived from Ireland in the 1850 - 1900 period. I would be interested in hearing from anyone that might also be descended from this crowd.
Does anyone have any knowledge of a male Sloan born in July or August of 1850 in Macon co Tn?. I have a census record showing Jesse Sloan with wife Arrilla, s. Marion F age 3 and s. unnamed age 1 month. I am trying to pin down Jesse's parents and also find a name for "unnamed". I can't find the family on any 1860 census, but they show up in Jackson county in 1870 and successive census years. Unnamed has either moved out or died by 1870. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda Sloan - john@dgnscrn.demon.co.uk ... also at john.chalmers@USLGN.mail.abb.com and ... http://www.dgnscrn.demon.co.uk/
Thought this would be an excellent idea for the Scot heritage in a lot of us. It may be too late to organize such an event in your community this year, but you can start planning for next year. Glenn Busbin http://members.aol.com/Busbin8088/home.html ---------------------------------------------------------------- In honor of the many United States citizens of Scotch and Scotch-Irish ancestry and in recognition of their heritage, April 6 has been proclaimed Tartan Day by the US Senate. This day commemorates the 1320 writing of the Treaty of Arbroth, which declared Scotland independent from England and declared Bruce the king. This document is believed to be the basis of the American Declaration of Independence. This year, the Spartanburg community will celebrate Tartan Day. The Spartanburg County Library will host several events throughout the day, including travelogues and genealogy workshops. At 5:30 PM, there will be a community wide communion at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, followed by a ringing of church bells in the city. Following that, there will be several activities at Montgomery Commons, downtown between the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. All events are free of charge. The Scottish and Scotch-Irish Heritage Committee urge you to attend the events and celebrate Tartan Day to honor your forefathers. ==== McQUEEN Mailing List ==== For a list of other mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/

Hi all, I'm new to the list too and have been very interested in the discussion of David and William Sloan. I descend from David's daughter Elizabeth who married Jesse Stribling. I found a copy of "Deeds of Franklin County Georgia 1784-1826" by Martha Walters Acker, 1976. There were several entries for William and David Sloan, both of whom were referred to as "of Pendleton Dist. SC". There was one other Sloan in the index and being a novice, I dismissed it. After seeing the post about the children of William Sloan, the entry becomes more interesting. on p 53: DEED dated GA. 2Nov 1793, rec. 23 Aug. 1794, from JOSEPH STEPHENS of Washington Co. Ga. to MICAJAH WILLIAMSON, Sr. of Wilkes Co. GA. In cons. of 500 pds., conveys 1000 ac. in Franklin Co., surveyed in name of ..., granted to JOSEPH STEPHENS by Gov. I bet the John Sloan who witnessed the deed was the son of William. Does anyone recognize any of the other surnames, or know how old a person had to be to witness a deed? Laurie McKenna Franklin E. Speaking of Capt. David, yesterday I made contact with William A. Sloan, III and his sister Ginger Sloan Billingsley also descendants of David. Right now they are missing the link(s). Their great grandfather was (I love this!!) SLOAN MAXWELL SLOAN and grandmother was Vigrinia Dare Stribling (probably a cousin). Does anyone know who their parents were?? Now the good part!! William sent the following newspaper transcribion that predates both Stribling & McKoy's works. The author wasn't mentioned it may have been R.W. Simpson, who published an article in 1913. Article printed in the GREENVILLE, SC NEWS July 29,1911 OF INTEREST TO THE D.A.R. Brief Sketch of the Early History of the Sloan Family Greenville, July 17 - Editor Keowee Courier: I enclose a little sketch of the early history of the Sloan family, which I clipped from an issue of The Courier about eighteen years ago. There are so many descendants of this patriot couple in Oconee and upper Carolina that I thought it might be interesting reading for a great many of your present subscribers. The D.A.R. are seeking information about patriots, and I thought it might be interesting to them also. I hope you can publish it in The Courier again. Yours truly, J. Capt. David Sloan, the progenitor of his race in the United States, was born in County Down, Ireland, in the year 1753. He emigrated to the United States and settled in the western part of North Carolina. He was a captain of a company of North Carolina troops in the Revolutionary war. Capt. Sloan married Susan Majors and moved soon thereafter to Pendleton District, South Carolina. He settled on the Seneca River, ten miles west of the present site of Anderson Court House, and made that place his home until death, which occurred on the 9th of October, 1826, at the age of 73 years. His wife, Susan, lived at the old homestead until her death, which occurred on the 5th day of September, 1853, at the age of 92. This honored couple had born unto them twelve children, six sons and six daughters. The first-born, which occurred on the 19th of May, 1787 were twins, and were named for their parents, David and Susan. The mother said she often put these little children to sleep at night and then hid them in the canebrakes while she took her bag of corn on her shoulder and went to the nearest mill to have it ground. On her return her heart was always in her mouth, for she expected to find her innocent babes butchered and scalped by the wily, treacherous Red Men. We give below the names of the children of this well known and patriotic couple, together with the names of their wives and husbands as the case may be: David married Nancy Trimmier, daughter of Obadiah Trimmier and his wife, Lucy Stribling, both of whom came from near Mount Vernon, Va., and settled on Toxaway Creek, in the territory now known as Oconee county. Susan, the twin sister of David, married Robert Bruce, of Georgia. William died when about 23 years of age unmarried. Mary died when about 18 years of age. Benjamin Franklin married Eliza Earle, a daughter of Gen. John B. Earle. Thomas Majors married Nancy Blassingame, a daughter of John Blassingame. William (the second) married Eliza Hackett, a daughter of Robert Hackett. James Madison married Rebecca Linton of Abbeville. Elizabeth married Jesse Stribling, of Anderson. Rebecca married Dr. J. B. Earle, of Anderson, and moved to Mobile, Ala. Nancy married Col. Joseph Taylor, of Anderson. Katherine married John P. Benison, of Anderson. The following obituary notice, which appeared in the newspapers at the time, gives an interesting account of the family: "Departed this life, on Tuesday the 5th of September, 1853, at her residence on Seneca River, Mrs. Susan Sloan, in the d year of her age, relict of Capt. David Sloan, S., who died October 9th, 1826, aged 73 years. Sixty-seven years ago, when the country was a wilderness and inhabited by the Red Men, Capt. Sloan, with his wife and their twin children, their first born, (Capt. David Sloan Jr., who died 29th of October, 1834 at the age of 47 years, and Mrs. Susan Bruce, who still survives) pitched his ten on the canebrakes on the western bank of the Seneca. For years they encountered and endured all the privations and dangers of a border life, but by industry, economy, energy, and enterprise the many obstacles incident to the settlement of a new country were overcome and the means of comfort and ease gathered around them. After the death of her husband Mrs. Sloan continued to occupy the homestead, and in the management of her farm and domestic matters exhibited a skill truly remarkable. "More than a half century she became a member of the Presbyterian church at Roberts, in Anderson District, under the ministration of Rev. Mr. Simpson, and in all probability she was the last of that generation to be called to the spirit land. She was the mother of twelve children, only five of whom survive here, 107 grandchildren, 273 great-grandchildren--413 descendants--of whom 344 are now living. To them she has left an example of industry, energy, piety, and Christian spirit, worthy of all imitation." "September, 1853." ******************************************************** Frank Mitchell
Frank and All The information you posted is the same unpublished Stribling Family information I used as base to start my research. Included in the same material is much concerning the Stribling branch. It also sites David and twin sister Susan Sloan Bruce as being the first born. Other researchers have conflicting information. I show the authors of this work to be Dr. J. S. Stribling, Seneca S.C., J. W. Shelor, Walhalla, S. C. and J. C. Stribling, Pendleton, S. C. These research notes are undated but came into my family in the mid 50s. I believe it was compiled from Bibles, DAR records and, local newspaper accounts. I believe some of the Striblings were in contact with Simpson. These same records list the following. Captain David Sloan's son Benjamin Franklin Sloan married Eliza C. Earle. They had seven children. P. H. E. Sloan [ initials only given, a male] married Ella MAXWELL. Children of P.H.E. Sloan & Ella Maxwell: Paul, married Susie Simpson Sue, married Sam Earle Harry, married Hattie Smith Frank, married Emma Merrick and Finally, Maxwell Sloan. No wife is given for Max. Additionally, no dates are given in this manuscript for this line. Additionally, Ella Maxwell is the daughter of Dr. Robert Maxwell and Lucy C. Sloan. Lucy is the daughter of David Sloan [ Jr., the twin] and Nancy Trimmier. I believe, but cannot prove this is the Sloan Maxwell Sloan you mention. Again, there is no record in this manuscript showing who Maxwell Sloan married. Looks like Max was a product of the finest southern inbreeding. There is no mention in the Stribling families of a Virginia Stribling. Does the above start to answer you question? Rick -----Original Message----- From: Franklin E. Although I have not verified it personally, DAR records and other sources online indicate that David Sloan was born in County Down, Ireland. We know that he was in Wilkes Co., NC in Jan, 1784 when he married Susan Major. His arrival in SC was likely between 1785 and 1787 when he settled in Sloan's Ferry. William Sloan may have been in SC prior to David coming there, based on some land transactions. Hope this helps, Sheila
I am a new subscriber to this list. I am connected to David Sloan, b. 1753 in Ireland; married Susan Major 19 Jan 1784 in Wilkes Co., NC. They had 12 children. He and his wife Susan died in SC in what is now Anderson Co. He died in 1826, Susan in 1853. David had brother, William whose wife was Polly ??. Polly brought suit against David in 1796 after William's death. There are other court records in Franklin Co., GA that document land transactions that involved David and William Sloan. Seeking information about David and William related to parents/other siblings and relationship to other Sloan families in NC and SC in this time period. Sheila

After a long family search I am about to make a breakthrough I think. Here is my story. My Grandfathers name was Charles Wesley Slone, b abt 1873 in Sip, Johnson, Co., Ky. He m Calista Boggs, from Webbville, Lawrence Co. abt 1899. They took up housekeeping in Lousia. He raised a family in Pike Co. and died in a mining accident in Garrett in Floyd Co. in Nov, 1930. Faded family history has it that Charles father was named Thomas and he had a sister named Mary. Mary married a Boyd and moved to Catlettsburg. Clues in his childrens names; first son named Hartman and a dau named Mary. My fathers name was Joseph. I would like to stop and thank Monita Horn and Mary Goodyear for their research on the Slones. It has been so helpful. There was a Thomas in Johnson Co. at the right time but I cant find anything about his children. His brother, John M. has a son named Charles b abt 1871. He had moved to Lawrence Co. by 1880. Could this be him I wonder. This family came from Scott Co. Va, Their father was Harkman Sloan. I want to claim this family but I need to get it straight. Someone please help me with this before I have a stroke! Questions: Is anyone reserarching Thomas or John M.? Where is Slones branch, and the Slone Cemetery in Johnson Co.? How would I get there. Does anyone have a listing from the Slone Cemetery there? Thanks Mary for telling us where Hoods Fork is. I have not been there yet. Why are there 13 donuts in a bakers dozen? <g> It has taken me so long to get to here, I think my ancestors came over in the Juneflower. Thanks in advance for helping fill an empty spot in my heart. Chuck in Augusta, Ga.
I've found some of my Sloan's in census records where they did not show up on the index for that census. In researching, I went house by house through the Macon co. Tn. 1860 census records and found the following Sloan's listed there" Fam # Name Age Wife AGE 377 J.G.Sloan 38 Elizabeth 34 379 Joseph 40 S.I. 39 380 W.S. 49 none listed - only children 387 John 46 Susan 49 807 A.H. 29 Pesfina (?) 31 995 C.A. 17 living with E.T. Ragland 1111 H. 63 Elizabeth 63 1112 R.W. 41 R.E. 41 I hope this data helps someone. I've only listed the husband and wife, but in most cases there were children listed, so if any of these looks like one of yours, go to the census and check it out. Just because the census enumerator spelled the name with an e on the end doesn't mean the family did. Much information on census records is far from accurate.
