    3. Does Deja News carry all these messages? I have used that as a source for other things. I would try it but for some reason my email is working but I can't get the internet connections to work. The have found that GenForum has been the best of any of the query sites for me...except for Sloan. Just one example of about twenty surnames, I put in my Colclough gggrandmother and within three days had seven different people respond and now have the line back to about 700AD documented and numerous other surnames to work with. Lots of Sloans use this list, just not my line. So I go on looking for the father of James Sloan, Kittanning Pa. Beth Sloan -----Original Message----- From: Franklin E. The Sloan-Slone List is not part of the "interactive" search, yet. I've found that the interactive list doesn't work very well. If you ask for John Sloan you get all Johns and all Sloans. To search the Sloan-Slone list, do this: 1. go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/searches/ 2. From the Table of contents, select: Search a million messages from over 6,300 mailing lists 3. In the "name of list" box, type: sloan-slone 4. Type in your query For example, type in Agnes Auld for the year 1999 and you'll get the 3 messages recently posted. If you type in: John Sloan for the year 1998 you get 97 matches. Iy you type in: (John Sloan) and westmoreland you get 2 messages concerning John Sloan of Westmoreland Co. Pa. It's a nice search engine. Remember, if you're looking for a common name it be easier to look for the spouse or a combination like: (John Sloan) and Mary Frank Mitchell List owner -- Apartado 11521, Zona 6 Panama, Republic of Panama Phone day 011-507-261-9757 Email: fmitchel@panama.phoenix.net Visit "The Sloan Connection" at: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html

    3. Well that was great! Not only did I get some leads as to where Sloans in Ireland might come from but some cousins linked up. I am glad I asked that question. I don't think any of the John Sloans mentioned is my John Sloan, however. This is partly to do with getting my initial information wrong. Therer are so amny johns, Roberts and Williams I do get a little confused. This is how it goes, so if anybody has anything here which rings bells with their family I would be p[leased to here from them. JOHN Sloan b 1815 IRELAND m. My connection starts in Renfrew just outside of Glasgow SCT. Where Sarah Sloan bc 1836 married John Reid in 31 Dec 1857 at Paisley. Sarah's parents were John Sloan bc 1806 and Agnes Auld bc 1807. From a Census records there were othe Sloan's living nearby. If there is any possible connection to your family I will hunt out the old data and see what we can come up with. Sarah and John lived in Dunbarton until they emigrated to NZ after their third child was born arriving in Dunedin in 1862. They had a further seven children in NZ. Sarah's brother's and sister as I know them to be were; Alexander bc 1826, John bc 1828, Elizabeth bc 1831 and William bc 1838. I suspect that John Sloan's father was Alexander bc 1781 but haven't confirmed this. If this is correct his brothers and sister were: Robert bc 1801, William bc 1816, Hugh bc 1821 and Sarah bc 1826. Hi Alan, my Sloan's came from Dunbarton as well (ours were spelt with the "e" for a while here and without the e for a peroid of about 30 years). My James Kennedy Sloane was born in Belfast? in approximately 1830 and i have found a William Kennedy Sloan born approx 1828 Belfast Ireland. William married Jane Harris in 1852 in Glasgow. They had issue: James b. 1855 Robert b. 1857 William Arnot b 1859 Jane Tait b. 1861 Charles b. 1863 Mary Reid b. 1865 John Campbell b. 1867 Jessie Muir b.1869 Campbell White b. 1870 Edward b. 1872 George Scott b. 1873 My James Kennedy Sloane gives his birthplace as Belfast on his marriage certificate in 1856 in Victoria Australia (then coming to NZ approx 1863) but on the certificate of his son born in 1858 (William James Sloane) he states that he was born in Comber, County Down. His parents were Robert Sloane and Elizabeth Kennedy. Robert was a farmer. Any tie up? I really enjoy these discussions of Sloans from Ireland and Scotland. Someday I hope to be a lot more knowledgeable on these old world connections. Also, I was very surprised to these some of this info available on the LDS Family search website. For those of you that are interested, I finally added an Ireland section to my Sloan researcher/querys webpage: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/searcher.html#Ireland Right now it only contains a few (duplicate) entries of some of our more well known ancestors. I decided to only post an entry in Ireland if the Co. or origin is known. Someone looking for John Sloan born someplace in Ireland, still has a long way to go yet. I try to get a query for all researcher eventually, of course, I'm behind as usual. Congratulations on discovering a cousin half a world away. 3. Annie: While I can't answer your question definitively, there are concentrations of Sloan(e)s in two places in Ireland. Perhaps the greatest concentration is in Co. Down, esp. east, near towns like Killyleagh (onetime home of Sir Hans, who indirectly lent his name to the Sloane Rangers, since Sloane Sq. and Sloane St. in London were named for him) Crossgar and Saintfield. There is also a curious concentration of Sloans and Sloanes in Lough Gowna, Co. Cavan where the local churchyards are full of them. My Sloane family comes from there, and I found references to brothers George and John Sloane (Frank: "too many John Sloan(e)s")who moved there in 1657 from Co. Down, having moved there, apparently, from Dumphries and Galloway. I've never found reference to them in any Scottish records, however, so that part remains unsubstantiated. Sloanes in Gowna invariably protestant, predominantly C of I, whereas Sloans there seem to be overwhelmingly RC. This may be the source of the claim in the area that there are two completely separate and distinct families living there. This bifurcation is more distinct here that it is in Co Down. Other family names from the area, who are married to Sloan(e)s include Fleming, Mansergh, Doughty, Pennyfather. See also Frank's web site on Sloan derivatives in Co Mayo, notably Slowey and the transformation of that name to Molloy which is one of the more interesting things I've ever read about the name. 2. Franklin E. Mitchell
    3. Hi Folks, I just finished working up this line and transferring the info from my old dBASE file. I thought I'd pass it along. Monita Horn was trying to tie this John into her family but was unsuccessful. She ran across a will {I don't have a copy} on this John that allowed her to make a connection to one of the Sloan families in Fountain Co. In. Hope it helps someone, I'm not aware of anyone researching this line. If anyone can connect it to the other Sloans of Fountain Co. let me know. 3. Rob, My ggrandfather, Samuel Eugene Sloan (1871-1936) was born in Rowan Co. NC. I have a picture of him when he was a young man approx 20-25yrs old. On the back of the photo it says "S.E. Sloan, Gonzales Texas". I have no idea why he was in TX. Maybe he was visiting relatives? I know it is a long shot, but you never know. Philip Sloan ---------- >From: "Sloan, C.
